RE: 2023 Sun Belt Pick 'Em (Sponsored by CoastalFans.com)
Osagej and Chantalum2022 - looks like Troy's matchup is now against Duke instead of GA Tech. If this will change your pick for that game, please either resubmit or let me know and I'll manually change your pick on the spreadsheet. Sorry about any confusion!
Well, folks...here we are, coming up on the end of another Pick 'Em season. There was a LOT of red on the sheet this week - several of these conference championship games were apparently a lot tougher to pick than most of you thought!
Biggest Rise of the Week belongs to Gdunn, who rose 6 spots in the standings after being near the top of the pack in Week 14. Great job! Biggest Fall of the Week belongs to former champion Bridgeforthduke, who plummeted 16 spots after failing to submit any picks in Week 14.
Just a reminder to those of you who may not have done participated in the Bowl Game week before - you will be asked to pick some tiebreakers so I can break as many ties as possible. One of the tiebreakers involves guessing the total points scored between Troy/Duke, so please try to get your picks submitted before that game!
FYI for anyone playing our Pick 'Em for the first time this year: Once you miss 5 total weeks of picks, I drop you from the overall standings. If your name is highlighted in yellow this week, you will not be included in next week's overall standings unless you make a pick this week. For those of you who may have dropped out - this is your last chance to submit picks this season!
The following players were dropped this week due to missing 5 weeks: GSUdbp
This week's picks are due by 8:45pm on 01/01/24. If you submit a pick for a game that has already started, you will automatically be given a loss for that game.
YOU MUST SUBMIT YOUR PICKS ON THE GOOGLE FORM TO BE COUNTED!
Can't embed the Google Form here like I can on CoastalFans - sorry!
Bump - still plenty of time to get your picks in before the first bowl game! Remember, pick submission time is used as one of the tiebreakers if necessary!
I'll post my usual list of people who have submitted so far sometime next week.
The time has come! The thirteenth season of the Best Damn Pick 'Em in the Land is complete! Yet again, it was a great year and I hope you all had fun participating.
Heading into our final week of the season, themackattack held the lead for four straight weeks. Could they hold on to deal Coastal fans another crushing blow in the CoastalFans.com Sun Belt Pick 'Em, and become just the third non-CCU fan ever to win the contest? Scroll down to find out!
Before we get into the final standings, let's take a look back at how things went for us during the 2023 bowl season. Here are everyone's picks from Week 15/Bowls. We did not have anyone achieve perfection, but we did have a previous Pick 'Em Champion - Original BDB - get all but two Bowl Games correct. There were also only three players - Mtneer84, Puddle Pirate, and Uncle Jessie - to correctly call Duke's upset over Troy. Great job to all of you!
We did also have one player, Chant51, who was dropped from the overall standings due to missing their fifth week of picks this week. They join the long list of players who dropped out this season, which also includes bcp_JMU, By The River, CFBLurker, EagleProf, ENCMU1992, mpearce61, Mwhite58, old dominion, JaxDuke, ericsaid, Surbadger, Appst92, BigChant, webster, Cnelson203, TrueBlueDrew, and GSUdpb.
As with last year, let's take a moment to acknowledge all of our previous Pick 'Em Champions, whose names will be listed in teal in this year's final rankings if they participated:
And now - the moment you've all been waiting for! One thing to keep in mind while reading down the list: any player with asterisks next to their point total has benefited from a tiebreaker, even if they have the same point total as another player. Our tiebreakers this season were as follows:
1) FIRST TIEBREAKER - Total number of points scored in the Troy vs. Duke game (27). Closest guess breaks the tie, whether you're over or not. Nobody got this exactly right, but the player who came the closest was Meathead with a guess of 24. Great job!
2) SECOND TIEBREAKER - Pick a number between 1-100. Closest without going over breaks any remaining ties. I used a number picker wheel and got this result:
So 97 is our number for this tiebreaker!
3) THIRD TIEBREAKER - Pick submission time. We did not have any ties make it to this tiebreaker, although we did have some players win ties by default due to the person they tied with not having submitted any picks.
We had several tiebreakers and one double tiebreaker this season! Keep scrolling to find out if you benefited from either of these.
We begin our countdown to #1 by acknowledging this year's "Mr. Irrelevant," which usually goes to a player who started the season late or missed several weeks:
chantchant swooped in at the last possible moment, saving any of our regular players from the dubious honor of coming in dead last. While there has to be a "Mr. Irrelevant" every year, it just goes to show that if you submit your picks every week, you're not likely to wind up in last place!
Next up, we've got everyone else outside the Top 30:
Next up, we've got numbers 21 through 30. A respectable showing!
Now, let's take a look at everyone who wound up in 11th through 20th place. Several more tiebreakers in this group of folks just on the outside of the Top 10.
And here we are, our Top 10! Let's see who finished in spots 4 through 10 - so close to glory, yet so far. Our lone Double Tiebreaker of the contest is in this group!
Before we move on, I do just want to give a special shout-out to bodoyle. It's not often we see the kind of consistency in our contest that he achieved this year. He was never outside the Top 4 in the rankings up until this week. Great job!
At last...the moment of truth. The Top 3!
Taking the bronze this year is SENOREIDA!
And in second place...mounting a terrific comeback, but falling just a bit short of becoming the first ever three-time Pick 'Em Champion, is Original BDB!
Which can only mean, Ladies & Gentlemen, that the new Champion of the CoastalFans.com Sun Belt Pick 'Em is...
As mentioned at the top of the thread, themackattack held down the #1 spot for an entire month heading into our final week, using smart picks the entire year to never fall outside the Top 10 in the rankings. This is the second year in a row that a non-Coastal fan has won the contest, and just the third time in the contest's history that a non-CCU fan has taken the Pick 'Em Crown. What a performance!
Great job, themackattack - your reign as the new Champ is underway! Now let's hear your victory speech!
For those who want to see the Google Doc of the final standings, here it is:

Thanks for putting this on! Always puts a nice spin on the games. Feel pretty happy with ending in the top 4, especially since I was down in the 40s at one point.

I didn't always track people's highest/lowest placements throughout the season, but added it because I thought it added a little bit of intrigue for folks to see how they improved (or tanked, LoL) over the course of the season.

Hi Hi Yikas!
While the Mountaineers may have fallen short in the Sun Belt Football Championship, we pulled through to claim an even greater victory, the Sun Belt Pick ‘em Championship. It has been a pleasure to compete alongside all of you this season. I’ll see you all next year!
