RE: Predict their Record: Southern Mississippi
Hopson had a few good years with Monken's recruits. His roster management was epically bad though, and left us in a bad mess that Hall has had to deal with. We really didn't have enough OL depth to run a D1 practice when Hall arrived. We also didn't have a D1 caliber QB in the QB room.

Hall has done a really good job of getting us back to being competitive in most games. Yet to be seen if he can compete for a championship though.

I feel Hop didn't recruit well and wasn't a coach... He was more competent than the last guy that was that way, at least Hop got wins..

We'll see what year 3 brings... I'm not sure about championship ready this season either. Depends on how several moving parts.

Jay Hopson might better be served as an assistant coach. 03-drunk

If you think what Hopson did is better than what Hall is doing, please go find another program to support.

I don’t think either are doing a good job. Hopson’s recruiting was awful, competing against D2 and 3 schools for recruits. But if you look at the statistics, even with the transfer portal, Hall’s rankings are worse. And to be such an ‘offensive minded’ coach, his offense has been one of the worst in D1 every year.

Please please please let Hop handle all of your recruiting going forward. Have you heard the guy speak publicly yet, can't wait for you to have that experience.

Yes, we always seem to lose one head scratcher.

I didn't see anyone else call this loss.. Its not a knock towards the Eagles either.. I've payed attention to their coaching hires, along with a bevy of P5 transfers. I see TX. St being a real threat this year for West teams. They've aquired alot of good talent. They're also about to be getting a heap of money from the state too. Could be a SBC shakeup.

You were probably ready to fire Monken when he started 4-20.

But Hop came in with a full cupboard thanks to Monken and then never really replenished it, hence why we had a dismal season under Hall the first year..

You're entitled to your opinion and I won't tell you that you're dead wrong. But if you're looking at stats of first 2 years of each, Monk left Hop with a QB and clicking offense that nobody, well I know one soul that could, screw up. Then Hop realizing his system and his players couldn't compete after that first game in 2020 is why he quit.

2016 had Nick Mullens on the team.. We had a very capable QB.
2017 we had Keon Howard
2018 - 2020 was Jack Abraham

If you think about it if Monk had signed guys in 2015 and even some of the ones he recruited signed in 2016, Hop had a decent cupboard until 2018/2019-ish..

It took Hall a season to unscrew the situation... We should see dividends pay out this season like last season... Maybe I'll eat my words

One would get that impression when after 20 years at various 1A/FBS programs, it took a SWAC school to give him his first shot to be a HC. We’re not the brightest when it comes to hiring sometimes.

That he now works for the school that embarrassed him into resigning from USM is just bizarre.

It's amazing how many people believe that “he set up for one big year then left the cupboard bare”.

Outside of one game every year, I just want Southern Miss to be great again. They are one of the more historic programs in the Sun Belt, and they need to help carry the Sun Belt banner.

The first decade and a half in C-USA, we went into every conference game believing we were gonna win, which we usually did. (Suffice to say, Tulane, SMU, Memphis, ECU expected to lose)
When Fedora left for so-called greener pastures, uSm made perhaps the worst choice for Head Coach in the history of college football. The stench and rot from that mistake still resonates today.
Not only did we lose a whole football season, we lost our mojo, our swagger, thousands of fans and our recruiting stature for years. When Monkee slowly but surely was regaining some momentum, Monk left and uSm went for the cheap and hired our 2nd big mistake. What happened was "second verse same as the first".
So, we can only blame ourselves for our decade decline.
Not sure about Hall yet, but right now it looks like Wommack woulda been the better choice (and I hope to hades Hall proves this old man wrong wrong wrong)
