Looks awesome. I love the put the star in the circle. Our baseball hats for the P-40 uni have that. I think I just threw up a little in my mouth talking about our baseball team.

I would incorporate the nose art from those planes as my logo.

If it were my call, I’d go ahead and change the head on the L of the uLm logo to the nose art. The fighter plane motif is awesome. All the residual bird stuff just mucks things up, It does make sense for the live mascot, though. He’s perfect.

YUP!! Would be cool and VERY unique!!

This would need somebody who actually knows what they're doing to clean it up and add some abstraction to the nose art so it's not so disjointed, but here's the general idea:
