Oliver to the JC Press: “We didn’t quite make 20 losses last season, and that didn’t sit well with me. You know I prefer to stand. [Mumbles under his breath, ‘Johnson City Honda, Johnson City’ ]. It’s all about 20 losses and 4 days in March.”

Am going tonight with fingers crossed as always. Not executing properly and missing multiple lay ups cost us the Furman game. These are correctable but it is getting late to start getting the fundamentals down. I think everyone is tired of this but let the Bucs shock everyone and win these last two games!

RE: Official Game Thread: The Citadel
Haynes can’t do that in a close game, but this is one night I can hardly blame his frustration with the refs. They called an early charge on a moving defender flop. No call on the player throwing an elbow under the basket followed by a rebounding foul on Haynes. Yeah, I’d have some **** to say, too….That 1 hand jam says a lot more, though. Let cooler heads prevail.

I missed the opening of the game. Where were Jancek and Strothers?

They didn't show a replay at Freedom Hall, but in live action I thought maybe Haynes got hooked or something and that he had a legit gripe. But you're absolutely right, he's got to stay cool and let his coach or coaches fight for him.

I love that he's got fire, but that fire can be helpful or hurtful. That technical changed the momentum. I think we were on track to extend the lead and get George a couple minutes at the end of the game. Not sure that The Citadel had enough offensive firepower to win tonight, but it certainly shouldn't have been in question.

I assume Strothers is still under concussion protocol. My buddy heard from the TV coverage that Jancek was hurt for an unspecified injury (i don't think it was a concussion).

It was so good to see Taylor tonight. I thought he played a heck of a game. He provided an extra energy boost.

At times we played well, but that’s typical. I don’t know what Haynes did, but officiating was poor. I understand his frustration. I’m assuming Jancek was hurt?

Citadel talks smack, just like VMI. It’s all they got. Always glad to win.

Wofford dropped the game to VMI so we may be out of the play in game on Friday. Not sure that’s good.

RE: Official Game Thread: The Citadel
Am I looking at the standings correctly that if we win Saturday we will be either the 5th or 6th seed? ETSU, Wofford, and UTC all tied at 7-10 with Wofford playing UTC Saturday. If we win Saturday, we would be in a two way tie with either Wofford or UTC. We would win the tiebreaker against Wofford (5 seed) and lose the tiebreaker against UTC (6 seed). Seems like if both ETSU and Wofford lose, ETSU would again own the tiebreaker and be the 6 seed. Is this correct?

It looked that way to me.

If Wofford and ETSU both do the same thing ( both either win or lose ) then we get to tiebreaker..

I’m afraid I don’t see a way that we win on Saturday. Hope I’m wrong.

It is s big task. The we lose, wofford lose combo seems like the more likely path if we get a tie breaker.

RE: Official Game Thread: The Citadel
One of Justice Smith's best games of the year - best since that game back in the OOC part of the schedule when we were all praising him. And his D was even better tonight than that game. May actually have been his best *overall* game. Played 34 minutes (an ETSU record for him, almost certainly), and played within himself.

El Cid didn't' have an assist 'til the 3:07 mark of the first half - I think by Clark(?) - and ended with only 5 for the game. (And Clark had 4 of those!) That's partly because they don't have a 'true' effective PG, and partly because we were denying the passing lanes quite well........UNTIL in the second half they started the back-cuts on us in the second half. *Somebody* (possibly with the last name "Conroy") had watched the tape of the Furple game.

Also nice games by King and Seymour. And Hairston didn't shoot well - except at the FT line to help sew things up.

Weird, TALL starting lineup. Not sure what that was all about, but we got a nice start. Heard Sandos say Gregory "wasn't available" (as if.........). Assume still protocol for Strothers. Don't know about Jancek. Somebody, somewhere, keeps a stat on "missed player-games" (due to injury), but it may be just the teams themselves. We've got to be leading the league in that.

According to the JC Press recap article, it is also a concussion suffered in practice for Jancek.

“ETSU coach Desmond Oliver said Jancek suffered a concussion and Gregory would be “taking some time away from the team.” Amid reports that some kind of fight took place, Oliver said, “No comment on that.””

Ugh. This teams practices are its worst enemy

RE: Official Game Thread: The Citadel
I saw a difference in offensive ball movement when King was out there and when he wasn't; it moved much better with King. The ball tended to stick in Smith and Tipler's hands when they were out there. It's too late for Tipler to change, but I hope Smith can get that out of his system next year. In spite of my criticism of Smith, I thought he had a super game; he really seemed to be engaged on both ends of the floor and not as "mopey" as earlier in the conference season. Tipler was just OK; didn't really hurt the team. Nothing he did was bad, but nothing he did last night really stands out in my mind.

I did like the confidence that Seymour displayed on the offensive end. Maybe some of Haynes' aggressiveness in the post is rubbing off on Seymour - not a bad thing, as I think he's got the ability.
