I'm not hard on coaches! A seasoned coach who has taken THREE teams to the NCAA tournament and has 15 years coaching experience, I sure would hope for better results then this! Basketball is way easier to change the culture then football also! If everyone returns next season then this team will breakthrough! I like the Creighton thread I wrote, and I'll admit Creighton broke through! Look how easy recruiting becomes also. I'm hoping we upset Akron tomorrow! BobW, be nice! I agree with what you say 90% off the time, and your Basketball insight is really good! Miss reading EagleSam reports!
Beating Akron is going to be...extremely unlikely. I hate that this is where we are at. But we do have Emoni Bates and there is always a chance that he goes off so you can't turn away. This is the most unusual bad team ever. Because we have the best player in the MAC, there is always a chance, without him, there would be absolutely no point in tuning in. If Acuff has another phenomenal game and Emoni returns to greatness, who knows crazier things have happened!

Emoni is not the best player in the MAC. Emoni has the highest ceiling of any MAC player but the jury is out if he’ll reach his potential. If you place Sparks from BSU or Wilson from Ohio on our team , then EMU is at least 0.500 in conference and maybe in the 3rd or 4th spot. There are several players in the MAC that would be more valuable to EMU on offense and defense. Like I said if Noah and Acuff shot the ball as much as Emoni, they could average 20 ppg. I’m sure Sincere Cary or Peyton Sparks or Freeman from Akron could easily avg 20 ppg if they shot as much as Emoni but they play team ball with other very good players. There’s a big reason why EMU has the #1 ranked worst defense. Care to comment on why?
Agree to disagree. Bates is phenomenal. He's getting every team's best shot. Go EMU! EMoniU!

I agree that Emoni is a phenomenal player but he is a sophomore and needs to grow into his very high potential.

I agree with your first statement above (underlined). But you make way too broad of generalizations with your remaining points. I listed the points per shot for our big three, the other MAC players you mentioned, and threw in Casteneda and Jacobs to round out the top 3 in the league. Casteneda is particularly impressive because he is achieving this as a high volume scorer. But Jacobs is a 4th option on his team so is being pretty selective with his shots. There are other guards in between them and Emoni, but don’t need to discuss everybody. Regardless, clearly Carey and Noah would NOT score more than Emoni if they shot more- TyCuff might. As for Sparks, Wilson, and Freeman, that is more of an apples to oranges comparison, as these types of players score everything at the basket often on put backs- so their efficiency is artificially high.

Points Per Shot
Sparks 1.75
Casteneda 1.63
Jacobs 1.61
Wilson 1.54
Freeman 1.51
TyCuff 1.32
Bates 1.27
Carey 1.14
Noah 1.10

So half of what you say may have validity, the other half is literally just “in your mind”.

That is another great point. I wrote a thesis to Luckey above. But missed this aspect of it altogether. Thanks for pointing out, and very true!

I would disagree using points per shot as the parameter to determine my hypothesis. Currently Noah and even Acuff defer to Emoni as the first option. When Emoni receives the ball the shot is going up which often times allows Emoni to get in a rhythm. Noah doesn’t have an opportunity to get in a rhythm because Emoni and Acuff are typically not looking for him (see assists). In addition there’s only O.13 points per shot hat separates them which may be statistically insignificant based on other factors. If you factor in assists, my eye test would tell me that Noah and Acuff have more assists than Emoni which indicates Mr Bates is the recipient of more catch and shoot opportunities. I would say this season has stifled Noah’s development based on no ball movement. I believe Noah averaged 16 ppg last year but isn’t having nearly the impact this season due to the way our offense is run. When you factor in defense, ball control, rebounds and assists, I would argue Noah is better than Emoni. Lucky for us we have 3 talented sophomores who keep the defenses off balance when the ball is shared.

Fair point on the minimal statistical difference in pps. So if Noah, Carey, TyCuff, and Emoni all took the same number of shots they will all likely score about the same total. Casteneda is clearly most efficient though. (Hope he doesn’t give us fits again tomorrow).

The rest of your counter points seem like very loosely associated extrapolations. Some I don’t think I fully follow. So we will have to agree to disagree.

But about the shot distribution, I think you are overstating this. I posted in the “non-coaching” thread what it actually is. Reposting here for our Big 3. Yes Emoni shoots a little more than the other two, but I’d say they are all in a similar range. Certainly not enough to take anyone out of rhythm.

% Shots Per Minutes
Emoni 31%
Noah 25%
TyCuff 22%

One more thing, when you talk about the impact of overall contributions, it is true TyCuff and Noah have twice as many assists. But you do reallize that Emoni has more Rebounds, Steals, and Blocks then Noah and more Rebounds and Blocks then TyCuff. TyCuff leads in Steals and Assists. We do have 3 really good players as you say.

Leading a 6-19 team in any stats category is like being the prettiest deck chair on the Titanic. Can we go back to discussing Coach Heath?

I think (I know) the point being made was that although coach Heath has the best player in the conference (you disagreed, which actually strengthens my argument that he isn't a bad coach) it is tough to win in the MAC with only 3 productive players and very little size. My point is that you would actually be better off with a team of quality players even if none were NBA prospects BUT with a supremely dynamic player, you always have a chance to catch fire and pull the upset.

RE: Will Stan Heath return
When one look at who's recently playing the best ball for EMU it's Tyson Acuff and Emoni doesn't even approach his stats. This has occurred because Acuff altered his shot four games ago. There's no likelihood he'll turn back as over his last four game he's averaging 29 ppg, shooting 67.8 percent on two's, and 64.5 percent on three's.

He's been EMU's best player in MAC play as he's shooting 60 percent on two's compared to Emoni's 46 percent, and is shooting 42 percent on three's compared to Emoni's 31 percent. He's probably the MAC's best player as well. We've seen his scoring and shooting percentage go thru the roof and he makes few mistakes.

The same cannot be said for Emoni who is a high-volume erratic shooter who makes nearly twice as many turnovers per game than Acuff does. And while Emoni is a better rebounder he does play the forward position, and one expects forwards to rebound more than what we expect guards like Acuff to do.

If Acuff is on down the stretch, he should shoot far more fgaa's than Emoni does something is very wrong.

For my metaphor to work the missing sugar is an obvious center / defensive wiz. Bates is the tallest person on the team and that seems bad.

Believe Randle is taller. But while it would be nice to have a better center, I consider EMU's defensive schemes, not it's players, as EMU 's central defensive problem.

This forum, at times, reminds of the 1970s coffee shops were young people got together to try and change the world. It never happened.

Agree with Ken. Heath will be here as long as he has a contract which has not expired and he wants to continue coaching.

For those who want to hang their hats on good stuff, both Noah and Tyson will be back next year and that is a solid 2/5s of a starting lineup.

Cup will not be empty regardless of what Emoni does.

Let's see how season plays-out. It's not over till it's over.
