RE: Official Game Thread: Morehead State
We know King can play much better. We saw it last year when he shot .429 from 3-point range for the season. And, in case anybody is wondering, he took a lot of shots last year, too, averaging 7.1 3-point attempts per game (versus 8.4 attempts per game this year). King has taken on a leadership role this year, and that may be affecting his play somewhat. He seems to be pressing a little bit instead of playing relaxed and letting the offense come to him.
Strothers has taken a lot of 2-point shots, more than anyone except Haynes and King. Unfortunately, he's making less than 30% of those attempts. I have to believe he's a much better shooter than he's shown. Coach Oliver doesn't seem to discourage these attempts, so I assume Oliver has seen him make those shots consistently in practice. Maybe it's a case of rust from sitting out his redshirt year. We have to remember, too, that Strothers still has less than 10 games against collegiate competition under his belt.
Tipler is shooting .425 from 3. I'll take that. But, he needs to follow the team rules, so he can be out there to help his teammates. And, like King and Strothers, he turns the ball over too much. The number of turnovers by our guards are bad enough, but it's the type of turnovers that are even more bothersome, with far too many falling in the careless, nonchalant, and/or unforced category.
Bottom line, I believe our guards are better than they've shown. They, and the rest of the team and coaches, need to put their heads down and work hard each and every day to get better. If they do, this team has a lot of potential.
