RE: Potato Bowl
What a great day!
We really came out flat and it looked to be getting away from us...the facemask on the opening kickoff, the fumble, them driving fairly easy. After they missed their field goal attempt and we blocked the extra point for the two points I told my buddy maybe we had kind of weathered the storm and we could settle in...boy did we ever! The o-line just looked like men against boys in that second quarter and if anything I'd have given it to Samson even more, but Powell and the WRs played great as well. Even in the second half when I thought their d-line adjusted and did a nice job of stopping our run and getting to Powell, we still found a way to man-up and grind it out. Jackson had that awesome TD run, but the first hole he hit was huge. Then our last drive, yeah we all would have run it and taken the field goal, but we marched down and took so much time off the clock we had pretty much iced it...a historic drive.
The defense...what can you say? They were awesome! Seemed a bit shell shocked out of the gate but then played wonderful. A lot was made about the two point conversion turning the tide, but I thought the goal line stop on 4th down really turned it. We then did it again on a 4th down and you could just tell...we were tougher than them! Like Dan just said...we didn't flinch! Both teams had difficult moments in the game and they couldn't overcome, we did! The coverage was great considering how well they SJSU throws the ball, Scott was easily the best player on the field for our defense, which is saying a lot.
How about Jesus hitting that 51 yarder or whatever it was?!?! It was a total team effort and it was awesome!
I showed up at Eastern in the mid-2000s and could only dream that we'd have a 6-6 record and make a bowl game at some point. These past seven seasons, through all the ups and downs, have been so enjoyable to watch. Almost every game has been meaningful in this time period. I can't help but think of Coach Creighton and celebrating with his best friend as he hangs it up, what a special night for those guys and I hope they realize what they have accomplished and what it means to guys like us on this board. I also can't help but be thrilled for guys like Dylan Drummond, Gunnar Oakes, Brian Dooley, Sidy Sow, Steve Bird, Alex Howie, Hassan Beydoun, Tariq Speights (I know some of those guys can come back next year, and that I'm missing a few), guys that came here as freshmen and early in their careers, stuck it out, didn't transfer, used their COVID year and were able to be apart of that yesterday! Also guys like Jake Donnellon, Terry Myrick, Maxx, Brody, Mike Glass, Brogan, Shaq, etc. all those guys that got so close and didn't quite get there, but helped to build this foundation!
Now as we get ready to sign our greatest recruiting class of all time...it is truly a great time to be an Eagle/Huron!!!
