A few observations

1. CofC is at or near the top of the conference in almost every offensive category. They aren't a great three point shooting team, but they take the most three point attempts by far and the highest percent of their shots from three. Because of this they are #12 in overall FG%, but they make up for it with great offensive rebounding to get more overall FG attempts. Watching them play a few times this year, they are really good at grabbing the long rebounds that come off their missed threes. Their three point shooters go after their own rebounds instead of standing there watching after they shoot. Once again CofC isn't very good on defense as they are 12th. in the conference in defensive FG%.

2. UNCW is on the opposite end of the spectrum where we are at the top of the conference in almost every defensive category. We give up only 63 ppg(#2) and hold teams to only 41.5%(#1) from the field and 30.9%(#2) from three. We aren't a great rebounding team but we have more posessions by being stingy with the ball and are #1 in TO margin.

3. Statistically Towson, Delaware and Drexel are the closest to UNCW and CofC overall and the current OOC records show this as CofC, UNCW, Delaware, Towson and Drexel are the top 5 teams in the conference right now. Delaware is #2 in the conference in scoring and are #4 in points allowed per game. Towson is #7 in scoring and and #3 in defense. Drexel is #1 in defensive scoring and #10 in offense.

4. Right now defense is leading the way in the CAA where 4 of the top 5 defensive teams have the top 5 records. CofC is the one anomaly as they have the best record but are #9 in points allowed per game.

It's going to be interesting to see how the top defensive teams fare against a high powered offense like CofC. Last year CofC had the #1 offense in CAA conference games averaging 77.3 ppg and were next to last giving up 76 ppg in CAA play. They had the same formula last year as they do this year, as they also led the CAA in overall and offensive rebounding. UNCW gave up 71 ppg during conference play last year and are only allowing 63 ppg OOC this year. We scored 74.1 ppg last year and are scoring 70.7 ppg this year. If those stats hold, we will be holding teams to 8 fewer ppg while scoring only 3.7 ppg less, which is a net gain of just over 4 ppg. That should bode well for the Hawks'.

When it comes down to it defense usually trumps offense in basketball. UNCW plays defense at an elite level and our offense is looking better each game. Have to like our chances as we head into conference play.
Interesting that CoC has faired so well, shooting so many threes and shooting them so poorly to boot. Given the offensive rebounding numbers i'd have to guess a lot of second chance points. Looking at the numbers as a whole, CoC doesn't really jump out at you, but alas here we are.

The Charleston of today is very different from the Charleston under Earl Grant. They've gone from a defense-first, pound-it-inside team to a fast-paced, run-n-gun type of team under Kelsey.

No doubt. But they finished with a losing record in the CAA last year and we swept them. Keatts>Grant and Siddle>Kelsey... so far. That's what makes this home game against CofC at Trask on the 11th. so important. Siddle has the chance to show his style of play is superior and UNCW can establish itself as the superior program in the South. Can't wait since Trask should be packed and at peak intimidation level.

Let’s hope so. I like the way the team has been playing. I’ve been absent the last couple weeks on the boards, but been keeping track when I could.

As bad as the bottom of the CAA is right now, the conference is ranked #17. SoCon is ranked #26 and Big South #24.

Delaware's streak ended tonight with a 19 point home loss to Ohio.

Towson @ Bryant tomorrow the last opportunity for a top tier CAA team to get a quality win

UNCW and CofC the only two teams without bad OOC losses along with good wins. I'd have to say they are the top tier coming into conference play. Hofstra, Towson, Delaware, Drexel on the second tier and everyone else on the third tier.

The one thing holding CofC back in national rankings is the fact they've had ten home games and only three away games. Away they lost to UNC, squeaked by Presbyterian 67-62 and beat Coastal Carolina 83-69. They are getting tested really quick to open conference play as they play home against Hampton, away at Towson, away at A&T, home against Delaware and away at UNCW to start conference play. If they come out of that stretch 5-0 they'll prove they are legit and would likely hit the top 25.

Last day of CAA OOC
D1 games include
Towson @ Bryant - Noon ESPN+
Stony Brook @ WVU - 6PM ESPN+
Yale @ Monmouth - 7PM Flo
NMSU v A&T in El Paso - 730PM YouTube

Charleston definitely has the tougher opening slate than we do.

While we both play national TV games on the road A&T is going to pack their place out
UNCW
@Monmouth
vs Hampton
@Elon
@A&T

Charleston
vs Hampton
@Towson
@A&T
vs Delaware

Right off the bat, Charleston has 2 games against upper level CAA while we have 0.

@A&T for Charleston is a national TV road game. While our @Monmouth is a national TV road game too A&T is going to pack their place out and have a rowdy atmosphere. Our @A&T game is also after the Charleston game so we may benefit from a hangover effect. We both play a struggling Hampton team. @Elon was a trap game last year so hopefully this year's team remembers that like they did against Jacksonville.

I'm going to be curious how CofC plays in some real road games against good competition in a rowdy atmosphere. So far their only road games were at UNC, at Presbyterian and at Coastal Carolina. They now get to start CAA play at Towson, at A&T and at UNCW. UNCW, CofC and A&T will have the best home crowds in the conference and they will face two of them to start conference play. If they can come out of the opening five CAA games undefeated they will be ranked for sure.

Playing Bryant in another high school level gym. Didn't realize so many colleges and universities had gyms this small. Also, watching Towson they are very suceptible to turnovers from a press. I hope we go hard at them all game.
