At least Drexel won. I think A&T will have a good showing against Texas Southern

Meaningless numbers. Lol

I mean...I'd like to be able to get a 12-seed or so rather than a 14 or 15-seed the next time we win a CAA title....

It's not meaningless but it's not getting any better any time soon. The additions to the bottom half of the league are going to do far more harm than good. Sucks.

Not complaining. Just find it amusing people care so much about those numbers in mid December.

I get that. The numbers fluctuate all season long. To me, it’s like wanting the air to be a certain temperature at 6pm for whatever reason, and instead of just waiting it out and reading the temp at 6, reading and telling someone the temp every 15 minutes starting at 8 in the morning. Lol

Looking at the NET ranking. HPU moved up 11, while we dropped 2. That kind of scoring will be brutal in conference play.

Fair enough. Some people really get into recruiting when that couldn't interest me in the least

I do enjoy the data though and trying to understand why the computers are spitting out certain numbers and what our trajectory will be. Not for everyone but I think there are some others that also enjoy the data

I predict the winner of the CAA will be somewhere between a 13 to 16 seed. Pencil me in for a receipt on this one.

For individual teams, yes. For the league, no. Once non-conference play ends your conference ranking is pretty much locked in. Precious few days remaining for the CAA to move up a few spots.

But no, in the long run, no, it hasn't mattered a whole lot for the CAA. At least not in quite a long time.

RE: CAA Watch
Individual numbers can matter. Look at Belmont and the OVC in recent years. OVC was pitiful but Belmont was able to overcome and get at large. Charleston could do something similar.

Best case scenario would be for UNCW and Charleston to dominate the CAA with UNCW edging out Charleston in the final.

Watching some of the different games it really makes me appreciate what we have with Trask. Delaware at Rider game is on ESPN and their basketball arena looks like a glorified high school gym. Same for Coastal Carolina.

Brogden Hall looked bigger than that Rider gym

#2 Towson 12.1 per game
#7 UNCW 11.1 per game
#13 Hofstra 6.2 per game

Reb Margin

#1 CofC +6.5
#2 Towson +6.2
#6 UNCW +.8
#13 Hofstra - 8.5

A few observations

1. CofC is at or near the top of the conference in almost every offensive category. They aren't a great three point shooting team, but they take the most three point attempts by far and the highest percent of their shots from three. Because of this they are #12 in overall FG%, but they make up for it with great offensive rebounding to get more overall FG attempts. Watching them play a few times this year, they are really good at grabbing the long rebounds that come off their missed threes. Their three point shooters go after their own rebounds instead of standing there watching after they shoot. Once again CofC isn't very good on defense as they are 12th. in the conference in defensive FG%.

2. UNCW is on the opposite end of the spectrum where we are at the top of the conference in almost every defensive category. We give up only 63 ppg(#2) and hold teams to only 41.5%(#1) from the field and 30.9%(#2) from three. We aren't a great rebounding team but we have more posessions by being stingy with the ball and are #1 in TO margin.

3. Statistically Towson, Delaware and Drexel are the closest to UNCW and CofC overall and the current OOC records show this as CofC, UNCW, Delaware, Towson and Drexel are the top 5 teams in the conference right now. Delaware is #2 in the conference in scoring and are #4 in points allowed per game. Towson is #7 in scoring and and #3 in defense. Drexel is #1 in defensive scoring and #10 in offense.

4. Right now defense is leading the way in the CAA where 4 of the top 5 defensive teams have the top 5 records. CofC is the one anomaly as they have the best record but are #9 in points allowed per game.

It's going to be interesting to see how the top defensive teams fare against a high powered offense like CofC. Last year CofC had the #1 offense in CAA conference games averaging 77.3 ppg and were next to last giving up 76 ppg in CAA play. They had the same formula last year as they do this year, as they also led the CAA in overall and offensive rebounding. UNCW gave up 71 ppg during conference play last year and are only allowing 63 ppg OOC this year. We scored 74.1 ppg last year and are scoring 70.7 ppg this year. If those stats hold, we will be holding teams to 8 fewer ppg while scoring only 3.7 ppg less, which is a net gain of just over 4 ppg. That should bode well for the Hawks'.

When it comes down to it defense usually trumps offense in basketball. UNCW plays defense at an elite level and our offense is looking better each game. Have to like our chances as we head into conference play.
