May have already been discussed, is there an actual "cup", and who is "Bubba"?

It’s “Bubas” and you can read details about it here:

RE: 2022-2023 Bubas Cup Standings
We needed that women's tennis bump... We might be able to hold on. USA is gonna gain some ground from softball, but fortunately for us they aren't really any better than us in baseball. We don't have men's track and field so a lot is going to come down to whether they're picking up ~10 points or ~5 points there. It's gonna come down to track and field, and I think it'll be very close but USA will probably take it.

Well, its probably time to concede to south. They are going to pick up in softball. If the fall is any kind of indicator, they have good track teams, and we don't offer men's at all.

Oh well, we kept it close considering we have two less sports counted in this than they do.

RE: 2022-2023 Bubas Cup Standings
Louisiana has claimed the softball regular season championship. Standings and points:

Louisiana 12
South Alabama 11
Marshall 10
Troy 9
Texas State 8
James Madison 7
Coastal Carolina 6
ULM 4.5
Georgia State 4.5
Southern Mississippi 3
Georgia Southern 2
Appalachian State 1

*Current Bubas Cup standings:
1. South Alabama (120)
2. James Madison (119)
3. Louisiana (100)
4. Georgia Southern (95.5)
5. Texas State (93.5)
6. Marshall (93)
7. Southern Mississippi (91.5)
8. Troy (90.5)
9. Coastal Carolina (89.5)
10. Arkansas State (84.5)
11. Old Dominion (74.5)
12. Appalachian State (72.5)
13. ULM (62)
14. Georgia State (50)

*Sun Belt office has added Beach Volleyball to the Bubas Cup race for this season. They did so after the conference tournament was completed. There does not appear to have been a conference regular season even though some teams played what were classified as conference matches. There are a total of 8 teams in the league, 4 charter, 4 associate. The conference tournament was a double elimination format. Here are the results:

1. Georgia State (seed #1)
2. Coastal Carolina (seed #3)
3. Southern Mississippi (seed #6)
4. College of Charleston (seed #2)
5. ULM (seed #5)
Stephen F. Austin (seed #8)
7. North Carolina-Wilmington (seed #4)
Mercer (seed #7)

When the conference has a sport that does not have a "regular season," they seed the teams then award points based upon who the higher seeded team was in the bracket to break ties when teams go out at the same time. So ULM would get 5th place points, SFA would get 6th place points. etc. Here's how the Bubas Cup standings should look if the points are awarded that way:

Current Bubas Cup standings:
1. South Alabama (120)
2. James Madison (119)
3. Louisiana (100)
4. Southern Mississippi (97.5)
5. Coastal Carolina (96.5)
6. Georgia Southern (95.5)
7. Texas State (93.5)
8. Marshall (93)
9. Troy (90.5)
10. Arkansas State (84.5)
11. Old Dominion (74.5)
12. Appalachian State (72.5)
13. ULM (66)
14. Georgia State (58)

I'm not sure when the conference office will update the standings on the site. I hope it will be before the softball tournament starts because they have 5 sports to post now, I don't see a reason to wait and update 9 at the end of the season (baseball).

So, they’ll clearly include WLax and field hockey, correct?

C’mon, retroactively including WVB when next to no one outside of Ca., Fla. and Tx even have teams?

Guess ULM did. Good on them. Who else?

344 teams would beg to differ, and that's just DI.

Where'd you get that number for beach volleyball? From what I see there's 67 current D1 beach volleyball programs and a handful of announced that will be added in the future.

When I see WVB I don't think of beach volleyball. I see Women's Volleyball

Yup, that one’s on me. I was watching some of the Beach VB c-ship tourney and didn’t make that distinction.

But, that WAS the topic of the retroactive add of BVB to the Bubas race. So, now let’s add field hockey and WLax retroactively too, no?

Talk to your Athletic Director, tell him you want those sports added to the Sun Belt Conference and let the other ADs work on getting it done for next season. Beach Volleyball was already a sponsored sport in the Sun Belt, I don't know why they waited until after the conference tournament to add it to the Bubas Cup race.

There are currently 67 teams in NCAA Division 1.

I had been wondering why Beach Volleyball wasn't included in the Bubas Cup.

I love that we’re losing the Bubas Cup. It’s my favorite Sun Belt loss so far this year.

RE: 2022-2023 Bubas Cup Standings
It would be nice to win it, but certainly not going to lose any sleep over it. Any competition that is unbalanced (every school not fielding teams in every sport) is inherently flawed towards those who can field teams in all / most of the sports. Overall though, it does seem to give a good snapshot who has healthy and balanced athletic programs. And Vic Bubas was a great man, so it's nice he gets honored.

The individual schools have to do what is best for their individual situations. Some lack the $ to have all the teams, some can't (due to Title IX) and some just prioritize sports for the region they are in. It is what it is.

I still can't understand how this isn't scored with a ratio of earned points / possible points...

I doubt that this better approach would have schools say "ok sweet, we don't need to keep adding sports now that Bubas Cup is scored fairly!"

I find it interesting that the Buba's Cup has been around for 47 years and yet no one complained about how it is done until this season.

Why is that? 07-coffee3

RE: 2022-2023 Bubas Cup Standings
Louisiana wins the softball tournament point.

Outdoor Track & Field has concluded. Arkansas State wins both men's and women's championships. Here are each rankings with points totals:

Women
1. Arkansas State (13)
2. Texas State (12)
3. South Alabama (11)
4. Southern Mississippi (10)
5. Coastal Carolina (9)
6. Marshall (8)
7. Louisiana (7)
8. ULM (6)
9. James Madison (5)
10. Appalachian State (4)
11. Georgia Southern (3)
12. Troy (2)
13. Georgia State (1)

Men
1. Arkansas State (10)
2. Texas State (9)
3. Louisiana (8)
4. South Alabama (7)
5. Appalachian State (6)
6. Troy (5)
7. Southern Mississippi (4)
8. ULM (3)
9. Coastal Carolina (2)
10. Marshall (1)

* **Current Bubas Cup standings:
1. South Alabama (138)
2. James Madison (124)
3. Louisiana (115)
4. Texas State (114.5)
5. Southern Mississippi (111.5)
6. Arkansas State (107.5)
Coastal Carolina (107.5)
8. Marshall (102)
9. Georgia Southern (98.5)
10. Troy (97.5)
11. Appalachian State (82.5)
12. ULM (75)
13. Old Dominion (74.5)
14. Georgia State (59)

*Just a reminder, these are what I think the point totals will be if I am correct in how they will calculate the Beach Volleyball points.
**Even if my calculations are off on Beach Volleyball, they shouldn't be on the others. That means South Alabama has clinched the Cup as there is no mathematical way of catching them with only one sport left.

Just glad to see that TXST moved up to 4th. We usually finish in the top 3 but we have new competition to deal with.
