RE: Basketball OOC schedules
Who has the hardest men's schedule?
Georgia State plays Auburn, Georgia Tech, Belmont, and Rhode Island.
USM plays Vanderbilt, Liberty, Montana, and UNLV.
ODU plays Virginia Tech, Penn State, and George Mason.
Texas State plays California, Washington State, and Rhode Island.
App State plays Louisville, Wake Forest, and ETSU.
ULM plays Texas A&M, TCU, Tulane, and La Tech.
Louisiana plays Texas, SMU, ETSU, and La Tech.
South Alabama plays Alabama, Oklahoma, UAB, and New Mexico.
Troy plays Florida State, Arkansas, San Diego State, and Montana.
The other SBC schools not listed on here don't seem to have very difficult schedules overall.

My vote from this list by face value would be Louisiana.

We only get Penn State if we meet them in our early season tournament

I had planned on putting the whole schedule together for everyone and filling in the NET rating of each opponent and averaging them out to determine this, but I've been too busy with work to get started. And then in addition to the average NET, adding a number for how many non-DIV I teams each team has scheduled.

JMU plays Carolina, which should open the season ranked #1, and Virginia, which should open the season ranked. Everyone else is garbage.

What’s the appetite for SBC making a scheduling pact to never schedule non-DI schools? I don’t care what conference the pact is with or even if we have to play SBC opponents during non-conference play.
I would happily play JMU and Marshall 3 times a season to make sure no SBC school nukes their NET rating with a DIII opponent.

You don’t need six guaranteed losses a year, dude.
No, I kid. This is exactly the kind of “leveling up” we need as a conference. JMU will sometimes play neighboring schools Bridgewater and Eastern Mennonite because they’re so close and it’s nice for their fans and whatever. But it does nothing for us. It’s like ODU playing Virginia Wesleyan. Local school, yada yada. But it does you no good.

Do the non-DI games even figure into the NET? RPI didn’t and I thought NET excluded those games as well.

Wondering the same thing. I was never as down on DIII-type games as others were during the RPI era because they didn't affect anything other than the impression you get in looking at a schedule. It was WORSE to play a bad DI team in a bad conference. I was thinking NET worked similarly.
In general, winning a game should not bring down a team's rating, and losing one shouldn't raise it, no matter how bad or good the opponent is. Five of us could get out there and end up with a decent rating if all you have to do is play good teams. Unfortunately, that isn't how rating/ranking systems always work.

Looks like The Herd loaded up on easy bus travel games. Just one DII game this year though...
There are two, aren't there? Or is Queens making the move to D1 this year? Either way, this schedule is pathetic.

D2/3/NAIA/other have literally no effect on NET; as far as the formula is concerned, the game doesn’t exist. You can lose to Regent or Apprentice a school and it won’t hurt you, whereas beating a sub-300 D1 school will do more harm than good. It’s a weakness in the system.

Based solely on the games listed above, I would say that Troy has the most difficult OOC schedule. Of course, that is assuming that those schools are as good this season as they have been recently.

JMU's away schedule isn't bad. In addition to uva and unc, we play buffalo (who is usually pretty good) and three games in a solid mid major tournament.
It's our home schedule that is a steaming pile. We have the return game with eku and then some head scratchers.

Based solely on the schools in the post above using last year's NET, ULM would have the toughest schedule followed by South Alabama, ODU, Louisiana, and Georgia State in that order. Of course South Alabama opponent Towson had a NET of 71 and New Mexico had a NET of 165, so we probably should have switched those two teams out.

Queens is moving to D1 this year. We are the inaugural home game in the division.

Marshall's basketball attendance range is usually 4k-6k for basketball games depending on the opponent and the situation. Marshall is coming off its worst season in a decade last year, but I think in the long run Marshall will be a consistent contender to be a top dog in this basketball league.
