But that doesn't make sense either because Marshall was not one of their properties, the AAC could have easily taken Marshall if they wanted to, and I think we might have even accepted. But I'm so glad we didn't now

True. Either way it doesn't make any sense what the AAC did. Really frustrating as an ECU fan.

I think ESPN said don't touch the FunBelt, so CUSA was their last resort. Why the picked the teams they did? Doesn't matter to me, I'm beyond excited to be in the FunBelt.

No one enjoys attendance smack more than ECU fans, and trashing UNCC is always fun, but I just looked at the Week 2 attendance thread and was reminded of that saying about glass houses. This is like a man with a 3 inch dong trashing a guy with a 2 incher, who cares they are both small and insignificant.

RE: Maryland @ Charlotte...12k fans
Pure speculation, but I wonder if the AAC considered adding just two or maybe four teams to get to 10 or 12, but remaining members had a really hard time coming to consensus on which two or four. And since they couldn't reach consensus, different factions conceded for the others.

If I'm right...

All six were marketz focused, obviously. And ESPN had heavy influence. But since the presidents and chancellor cast the votes, they had to also answer, "What's in it for my school?"

To break it down, UAB, I bet, was the only unanimous choice as an addition. They kinda checked all the boxes.

Panic played a role in getting all three Texas schools. They went defensive after the MWC expressed interest in getting into the Central Time Zone. (I stole this idea from Matt Brown, who said in his podcast last year that he thought adding six was a panic move.)

Rice was pushed by the private schools and Navy and got in as a concession because other factions wanted other schools.

UTSA may have been pushed by football-first schools like ECU and USF. UNT may have been for basketball (C-USA tournament titles).

FAU may have been pushed by schools who were convinced two Florida schools were essential. And I guess, at least under Kiffin, has had double digit win seasons.

Charlotte? I don't know. Matt Brown was more surprised by Rice and UNT than by them. Maybe ECU actually pushed for them once they knew App State either was not interested or would never get the votes because of the small town and lack of a big graduate school. Maybe someone like Temple wanted a short flight? Maybe it was simply for the sake of balancing for the eastern half of the league?

I'd love to hear the real story behind it all. I wonder if FOIA requests would unveil some answers. The AAC's reasons for choosing their expansion schools are less clear, or more debatable, than all the other FBS leagues in the past two years.

Charlotte is like a local community college, if we are being honest. They don't have a ton of students on campus, they have no athletics culture, they have no real "party" culture and there is nothing that bonds the students to the school. That is very much in opposition to what you see at App State and ECU where football is life for most students all fall (at least until the holidays and exams) and most of the student body can bond over that. ECU has it's party culture where students leave Charlotte to go to Greenville to party, go to football games, etc.

This was the biggest home game in our history. Should have been marketed and advertised months ago. It was not...at all. Even to students and alumni. You're not getting anyone to show up to your event in a city this big unless you're shouting "Hey over here ...something is happening". UGA advertises and markets constantly in this city and they are yhe defending national champions. It is what is. We are staring at a hole on the east side of the stadium with zero plans 5 years after moving in. We had 77 acres to develop where we could have planned an athletics neighborhood including an IPF and we didn't do that. Now every parcel of that 77 acres has been built upon or is being built upon. So the non marketing of a winning program is par for the course. You would be amazed at the number of people I run into who think we still suck at football. If they still think that and you do nothing to advertise that that isn't true ...

But the popcorn is still good in Charlie's office I am sure.

Not to mention 5 of the leagues 7 home games had announced crowds under 20k. Come on fake ECU fan you know that's garbage, if you were a real ECU fan you'd know you are supposed to trash your fellow conference mates who draw like that. 04-cheers

3 inches is 50% larger than 2 inches.
18K average SBC week 2 attendance is 50% larger than UNCC's 12K attendance.

b0nds is also right about real ECU fans. A real ECU fan would be trashing everybody in here over those #'s. 03-lmfao

We have like 8000-9000 students on campus and like half the student body is on campus or walking distance. I live in a neighborhood on the light rail line about 6 miles from campus and I have a fair number of students living around me too.

The problem is we just suck.

Our student attendance is actually not bad typically. It held strong all last season and had been solid at the start of every season. They obviously stop going when it is evident that we are trash, again.

The problem is we are dreadful and alums and local community don’t want to waste money on a loser. Until we stop being cheap or going with gimmick hires, this is the result we are going to get. I don’t even go to games anymore. They’re no fun and I’m not going to let my time or money appear to support the way the program is being run.

Please just give me a retread that has been successful being the man in the past. Lots of those should be available this year. Frost already fired, Neal brown likely to be fired, and satterfield is also likely to get canned.

ECU has really impressive fan support that even sticks around pretty well through long stretches of suckage so I guess it is pretty easy for you guys to criticize just about any G5 on attendance. Most of the new AAC didn't do any better than the SBC did this week though. Troy and JMU did well despite rain and FCS opponents. GSU was disappointing but at least there's progress there. App, Marshall, USM were on the road and all put up solid numbers last week.

So yeah, a bit of a disappointing week for some but a lot of teams dealt with rain and unfortunately that can leave you with just the hardcore fans in a lot of places. I'm not too worried about one underwhelming week. Hell, you guys were only 74% capacity a week after you should've had NC State and while hosting a team that just took down VT... Of course 74% at ECU is still 36k though. Ability to draw 30k on a bad day is a big part of why we'd like to have you guys over here 04-cheers

If I was Coach Sat and got fired by Louisville, I'd take my buyout money, come back to Boone, sit on my porch watching the sunset over the mountains, help Coach Clark breakdown film for a couple hours a week, play golf in Linville all spring with Joe Gibbs and Mack Brown, maybe get a gig down at ESPNU studios in Charlotte once a week in the fall. You know, basically retire.

But then again, I don't have the type of drive or "fire in the belly" it takes to be successful and would retire at the first economically feasible moment (which will probably be never because as I said I don't have that drive)

I will say this- UNCC students are way more into UNCC than at any other time that I can remember. Maybe in the late 90s when basketball was big. I have a few kids in my hood that go to school there that always come back sporting UNCC attire, you never used to see that. My wife is a former teacher at a very high performing Union county school, she said that UNCC was a lot more popular starting in the late 2010s then it had been previously.

We can make fun of their 12k (and i rarely miss an opportunity to crap on UNCC), but it was crappy weather and they just got manhandled by an FCS team and coming off a 4-8 or 5-7 season.

Georgia State barely got more with a bigger brand opponent coming off giving So Car all they could handle (outside of special teams) and a bowl last season. Thats a bigger failure to me.
