RE: Welcome but really a note to JMU and a bit to Southern Miss
My first ever JMU game was against Appalachian State in the fall of 1982. Great back and forth game with JMU coming from behind to win very late, 39-35. Sat next to what I thought at the time were two real life Mountaineers. On a blazing hot day, they were wearing jean overalls without shirts. They were about 60, big hairy dudes, and were drinking from a plastic milk style jug. Their catch phrase on pretty much every defensive play was "Get 'em Apps"

At the time, it was considered the biggest win in our short football history, and I think those guys recognized the moment - they were very gracious in defeat and fun to be around during the game. We'd only had scholarship players for 3 years prior to the '82 season. The next week, we upset UVA for our first FBS win, so that App St. win is somewhat lost in the shuffle.

Here's the newspaper article:

And I have no intention of discussing the 2008 game today. :-)

JMU at App State 2007 Playoff

Welcome to Marshall, ODU, Southern Miss, and yes, even JMU. I have been excited about all of this since it was announced.

(And SMU, we still owe you for messing up our 1937 season when App State was unbeaten and unscored on until the bowl game.)

And we don't hold grudges for more than 200 years....

I'm still salty about USM losing to the Hattiesburg boy scouts in the 1910s.

There are not many programs that have a winning record overall against App in football. Furman is one that will be hard to flip to our side as we need 7 or 8 wins and we have not played them since moving to FBS and we might play them once every 20 years going forward. We may never play them again.

And we have a few schools that do not exist and that is frustrating. Every school has some losses to a local high school or maybe during a war a local military team than does not exist any more. Unlike Furman that holds out some chance of playing them again we are never play a team that has not existed for 80 years. I don't like that some local high school has a winning record against App football. and nothing we can do about it. But everyschool has that somewhere if they were playing in the 1930s or earlier.
