The better we are, the tougher it is going to be to get P5 teams to play us. Losing to any team outside the P5 hurts them. It's a better loss than to an FCS team but still too much of a risk for them.

I think that depends. If you get to the point of being ranked like a Coastal or App St, then I think those games/wins can be very beneficial for them.

As the SBC rises in strength, getting those games could happen more.

I hope you are right. I do think we absolutely have the potential to do what App/Coastal have done (hopefully even better). The perception of the Sun Belt has changed quite a lot in the last 10 years and I expect it to get even stronger.
I still think it is going to be incredibly difficult to encourage P5 schools to play in Harrisonburg, but hopefully it can get done in the near future.

Why should it be more difficult than what Appy has to overcome? Boone is further from a hotbed for recruiting than is Harrisonburg. They've already scheduled Miami, UNC, Wake, and South Carolina for games in Boone. It will be tough. Lot's of phone calls and probably some creative thinking, but ASU didn't come to FBS with anything different than we have. I think averaging one every four seasons would be a good goal and help generate excitement for our program.

I didn't say it was impossible. I agree with you. It WILL be tough.
Not counting future games (since there's no guarantee they will happen), in App State's history as an FBS program, they have hosted only 1 P5 ... Miami. 2 if you count UNC this season.
I agree that we could have a similar rate of hosting P5s as App State.... a very small rate.
As I said... not impossible, but incredibly difficult. And if we were to win those games at home to a P5, I would say it would be even more difficult. Impossible? NO.
So if we get one P5 in our first 8 years as an FBS, then we'd be right on track with App State. That's very possible.

App crammed in 35,000 when hosting Miami and Wake Forest respectively. I imagine they will break that record this year when they host UNC.
I know the stadium doesn’t seat that many people so it has to be a ton of SRO tickets sold to watch from behind the open end zone.

Hosting UNC has to be euphoric for them. I would equate that to JMU hosting UVA or Va Tech.

I am not a football game scheduler so forgive if a dumb question...

For a G5 to get a P5 at home, does this require a future series like a 3 away and 2 home or 2 away and 1 home?

JMU has never had a series w/ a P5 like this for obvious reasons.

So is the question, what P5 will be the first for JMU as a series of multiple away and home dates in the future a few years?

VT is tied up with our peers until we are all collecting social security.

I think JMU's first P5 Home and away series will be with the West Virginia Mountaineers

I don't think you can really generalize what is required to get a P5 at home as there are too many variables. Where is the G5 located? Is there a history between the two? Did either schools have a sudden schedule change? What are the game terms as far as money as well as buyouts? What does the P5's schedule look like from both a home/away basis but also a P5/G5/FCS basis? With that said, IMHO I think the 3-2 and 2-1 is much more prevalent than true 1 for 1 (esp. 1 for 1s without money incentives to make the 1 for 1 more attractive for the P5).

Your VT future schedule point holds true for most P5 schools so I think it will be a few years until we have a 2+ year agreement with a P5 (thinking similar to the VT and ODU series).

WVU, UMD, NC State, Duke, Wake, and UVA would be strong candidates to be the first to say yes to a game in Harrisonburg.

WVU would definitely be at the top of the list. They agreed to play us on a neutral field when we were FCS. Plus we aren't that far from them so it would be a game their fans could drive to.
