RE: 2022 WAC Postseason thread
I dread to see who is in the BC. CBI has lots of teams over 200 NET, multiple teams not over .500, the WAC 9th place team and CUSA’s 10th place team.

Trying to find a listing for the TBC field, but nothing yet. I hate to think Seattle might get left out of the postseason completely.

Finally found something and it looks like as of last posting they only have ten of 32 slots filled with two schools deciding not to participate. UTEP out of C-USA and New Orleans from the Southland are listed as having accepted invitations to play. May still be a chance for Seattle, GCU and possibly Sam Houston.

I won’t. These tournaments need to the “buy-in” of the players and school. Maybe the players don’t want to play. Coaches are getting hired and fired every day. Players might be more interested in entering the portal and seeing what’s out there, than playing in a two bit tournament.

It looks like the selection committee got it right. The lowest ranked team of the 21 invitees was Princeton (ranked #104 by KenPom). Besides NMSU (#83), the only WAC school higher than Princeton is GCU (#93). However, GCU only has one OOC win against a quality team (San Francisco #21) and GCU only played two other top 100 schools (Wyoming #58, and ASU #95) in their OOC schedule. The in conference loss to Dixie State was probably the final nail in GCU's coffin.

None of the other WAC schools were rated in the top 100.

Based on Seattle’s tweet 6 hours ago, I would assume they’re done as well.

I agree this is a winnable game. Hope you all represent the WAC well and get the upset. Will definitely be cheering for you.

Ever since GCU ended their transition period, it seems they turn down all CBI and other lower level tournament invites. Not sure what the rational is there. It seems like any post season tournament would provide some experience for the players and exposure for the school.

I didn’t see 1 team under .500 in the CBI. The first time this has happened in many years.

They are both exposure and experience. IMHO, the kids need tourney experience as they progress in their career. Our veterans had lots of tourney experience, most of it NCAA, but any experience helps prepare mentally and physically for that extra play.

The 2 non NCAA and NIT tournaments seemed a little questionable at first, but I don’t see anything wrong with them now. Not at all.

And it isn’t just teams paying to be included. It may cost, but it’s not a “buy your way in” deal. And plenty of teams (as highlighted on the CBI website) have used that experience as a springboard to bigger things.

I think GCU is making a mistake, but it’s obviously not my call. They may be right to sit out for the institution, and maybe even for the basketball program, but every year is some players last year to play and the post season can be where memorable events happen.

Agreed. Makes no rationale sense to me either.

It looks like he pulled his information from the net rankings where non D1 are excluded probably. I don’t know really.

Damn that really does suck. These post season tournaments are when I actually root for GCU (against UNM and UTEP I am also a GCU fan). I think this would have been a good experience to prep the team for next season especially against quality/different teams. Get the players experience and make them thirsty to take down NMSU next season.

Get the players experience and make them thirsty to take down NMSU next season.

In the 2007-08 season NMSU finished with a 21-14 record and were the WAC regular season Co-champions with Utah State, Nevada, and Boise State (all at 12-4 in conference). Utah State was awarded the #1 seed in the WAC Tournament, so they locked up the automatic bid to the NIT. It has been a while since NMSU was in the same situation as GCU, but I remember back then NMSU adopted the same policy when the Aggies lost the WAC Tournament Championship to Boise State and did not get into the NIT field, they decided not to pursue nor accept any invites to a pay-to-play post-season tournament. NMSU stayed home that year.

Maybe if GCU had a senior laden team, they might have considered extending the season. But I think with potentially a lot of returners for next season, Bryce Drew is ready to start thinking about the 2022-23 season.

But we will see if any other WAC schools get invited to post-season play. The Basketball Classic is still building their 32-team field. As of this post, 12 teams have accepted invites and 4 teams have declined.

Participating teams

The following teams received an invitation to the 2022 TBC:

Team....................... Conference....... Overall record
Appalachian State..... Sun Belt........... 19–14
Coastal Carolina....... Sun Belt........... 16–13
Florida Gulf Coast..... ASUN.............. 21–11
Fresno State............ Mountain West.. 19–13
New Orleans............ Southland........ 18–13
Portland.................. WCC................ 18–14
South Alabama......... Sun Belt........... 19–11
Southern Utah.......... Big Sky............ 20–11
UMBC...................... America East.... 18–14
UTEP....................... C-USA............. 19–13
Wofford................... SoCon............. 19–13
Youngstown State..... Horizon League. 18–14

Declined invitations

Arkansas State
Liberty
Weber State
Samford

It appears GCU has turned down all invites. As an alum this annoys the piss out of me.
