CAA MBB Transfers 2022
Each year we lose recruits that would be major contributors for us (and very successful CAA athletes) to P5 schools where they languish on the bench.

I don’t have an opinion of the specific players being discussed but as a general rule I am quite happy with transferring in P5 kids with multiple years of eligibility remaining.

When I have long left this mortal coil and we are truly an A10 caliber MBB program then maybe that viewpoint would no longer apply.

Would love to see him in green and gold.

I don’t understand why a 22 game season with 17% shooting from the field translates into anything other than that is the player who he is.
Sure there could be some regression/progression from mean. He was 2-27 from 3 and 4 for 7 from 2. No made 3s in SEC play. Conference change ? Luke Loewe transferred conferences and his shooting % were essentially the same as in CAA. He needs to do more than shoot. He is not a shooter. Has a summer to work on it.

One of the best unbiased sources is Verbal Commits who has him as a 3* recruit out of high school. If we sign him then it would be our second 3* pickup. We had none.

CAA MBB Transfers 2022
SG/SF Gabe Dorsey 6'6 215lbs Westminster, MD
Another high ceiling kid that got little play in his freshman year at Vanderbilt. Much like Noah Collier, he was highly touted out of high school (Top 150 nationally ranked in the 2021 class. Listed as a 3* or a 4*). He is a rising Sophomore, so he should have 3 years remaining to help build out a young core. Big and athletic southpaw with fluid guard skills. He is best known for his shooting stroke. On a team lacking consistent outside shooting, he is as good an addition as one could hope for. Holds the record at the Hill School (Chase Audige's school as well) for 3pt shots made in only 3 seasons. His shooting is his standout trait, but the word that comes to mind for him is "solid". He does a little of everything well. Dad played at VMI and Towson & older brother is a rising Jr at Penn State (future transfer possibilities?)

Probably need to add Monmouth, Hampton, NC A&T and Stony Brook to the list, since they will be in the league next season.

Feel older and older everyday with not wanting to adjust to the pace of change these days.

Okay, but you’re asking a group of coaches, who failed to make a single player shoot better, to help this kid. That reads pretty cruel but I’m not wrong.

At this point, I want to be wrong and watch this staff train every Tribe player to shoot lights out.

I hope you are right.
He has a stroke reminiscent of Adrian Branch an unorthodox lefty who excelled despite shooting from his side. I do not like his form: doesn’t square up, doesn’t release at high point, pushes the ball, and he ends up sideways as he shoots. If it goes in it counts. Makes one wonder if Stackhouse corrected his form last year and his shot stopped goin in.

Gabe filled a critical slot and with his addition our team this fall has great potential. We have clearly upgraded our roster from this past year with two 3* transfers and a total of 5 transfers plus 5 freshmen joining us this fall. Congratulations to the coaching staff for a job well done!

Maybe mine isn't the most popular opinion, but I think most of these newcomers will be solid enough shooters. Dorsey has high level shooting potential. Nelson and Case are capable of hitting the open 3. Mullins is more of a penetrator. Collier shouldn't be shooting perimeter shots. Is the shooting enough? I'm not sure. But I do think the players we've brought in are better shooters than what we lost.

Most of these guys will probably be in the business school. Maybe there is some data analytics that can be brought to bear:)

Is Rainers scholarship officially available?

Aka: Do we still have one more scholarship to use?

PS: It’s going to be so weird having almost no clue what we have with this team at all until a couple games are played since 10/14 players on the team right now are brand new to the school.

It’s going to be a new kind of challenge for Dane
and the staff to figure out our best lineups and rotations and I sure hope they are up to that challenge, but I’m not very optimistic about that from what we’ve seen so far, but hope I’m wrong.

Interesting observation. Hope Dorsey can figure it out. I remember P5 defenders (especially UVA) picking off Dixon's stroke at the bottom since he started so low. In conference, though, it was never a problem.

Loewe was forced to add a higher release at Minnesota, but never had a problem (except for '20-'21 when he was our only offense) in the CAA.

Dorsey being a tall lefty, I suspect he may have more success at our level.

Hoping our coaching staff can do great things with the pieces we've added, but not confident.

My quote was more of a "general, any school" take, not W&M, in particular. As a head coach, anywhere, you have to hope you have a staff that can teach the needed skills to talented players.

I agree with you, this staff still has to prove THEY have the ability to make this group of somewhat raw talent into skilled participants and a winning team.

I am keeping my fingers crossed.

I’m willing to bet we win more than 5 games in 2022-2023. I can’t name two players but the group we have now has to be better. On a positive note, the guys who kept their commitment really want to be here, even if just for a free degree. I’ll take that.
