First Home game against FBS opponent: NIU (lost 31-0)

First win against FBS opponent: @SW Louisiana (aka Louisiana) (20-7).

The crappy years!

First D1 team we hosted was UL in 1975. We won - of course we won every game that year.

We haven't beaten UL on their home field since the game you reference other than the Malzahn run it again year. I think the game you reference might have been shortened by a tornado.

I played in that game in 1975....holding for our kicker, Raphael Septien. We were up 2 scores at the half, but couldn't stop y'all in the second. We got your back the next year at Cajun field. Cheers! 04-cheers

We were never 1-AA either.

Did you get any kicks blocked by stAte in 75. I think we still hold the D1 combined kick/punt blocks record with 11 that year.

I don't remember any on punts being blocked, but that was a long time. I know we didn't get an extra point or FG blocked because the 3 years I did the holding on those plays the only problems we had were bad snaps, no kicks blocked.

Our other two opponents that year were "Lake Charles" which I suppose was a high school team and "New Orleans AC" which I'm assuming is the New Orleans Athletic Club (which still exists today.) Times were certainly different back then.

Edit: A few more games of note for you:

1903 vs. Delcambre Academy - Win 105-0 (Delcambre is a VERY tiny fishing village on the Louisiana coast.)
1904 at "Company K" - 0-0 (Is this an Army team?)
1905 No games due to yellow fever outbreak (but muh freedoms!!!)
1923 vs. Southern Miss - Win 66-0 (Our first game against a Sun Belt team.)
Good info! Louisiana has always been D1/FBS so this question was an anomaly.

Very interesting to see the weirdness of the early schedules for some of your old time teams. It also really shows how different the process for making things "official" must have been back in, say, 1902 vs. 2002. Kind of makes me wish the major record keepers would pay more attention to our club/non-NCAA histories so we can all have a Wild West portion of our stories.

Yeah I actually spent a lot of time thinking about those old Wild West games and how they would have even taken place.

For example, I don't even know how LSU would get from Baton Rouge to Lafayette in 1902. The two cities aren't far away, but there is a very large swamp between them (Atchafalaya) that was basically impossible to cross at the time. Because of that swamp there was no railroad from Baton Rouge to Lafayette. And this was before automobiles were prevalent so I'm assuming it wasn't by car. So did they take a train to New Orleans and then to Lafayette? Or did they ride in a freakin horse and buggy to get here?

As for the record keeping, I think it is pretty common for schools to have completely different records of games that were played during that time. I might be mistaken, but I remember a playing an SEC team a few years ago where they show us beating them but we don't even have that game in our record book. Maybe Jay Walker can help me out with this.

It was an ugly game with a combined 5 interceptions and 4 fumbles that Troy won. Atlanta Trojan and I are still trying to dry out from the game.

That was a fun trip. I also made my way up with a friend to watch Southern miss play Louisville during that monsoon. I’m sure USM fans remember. It was a MESS.

From that game, illustrative of the horrible lost year of Southern Miss football in 2012:

Our first-ever game and home game was a 30-0 win vs. the Hattiesburg Boy Scouts at Hattiesburg's Kamper Park, within which the zoo is now located.

First home game vs. an FBS-equivalent was Ole Miss in 1913, again at Kamper Park (13-7 L).

If I'm reading the records correctly, our first game vs. an FBS-equivalent after getting our own field was Louisiana in 1933 (6-0 W).

Related, I still chuckle at the guy on the CUSA board who shrugged off my statement that joining the Sun Belt would return us to our program's roots.

Today I learned, Louisiana is our second oldest FBS rival other than Ole Miss. 2023 will be the 100th anniversary of our first game against the Cajuns.

We have played a total of 51 times by far the most games against someone from outside the state.

It always fascinated me during the early 1900s when coaches would just pack up and go to war than come back to coach couple years later. Could you imagine that nowadays ..Will Hall is going do a tour of Europe we dont know when he will be back or if he will be.

Part of that was guaranteed home games with Southland rivals that we knew would put people in the stands as we got our footing. At that time we were trying to schedule D-1's literally at the last minute and they all said "you gotta come to us." That was fine with us since it meant we'd get some guaranteed money for a couple of years. In 1995 we only had four home games and there was nothing we could do about it.

You have to remember that there were only 107 Division 1A Football schools in 1994, including ULM when we moved up. There are now 131 FBS schools, so not near the number of options to get home games in the those first 2 years.

We did have home games those first (2) 1-A seasons with teams that are now FBS, just had not moved up at the time (UCF, North Texas, Troy and Jacksonville State).
