RE: First FBS team you hosted
UTA had ambitions of joining the University ranks in the mid-60’s. Back then, the rules said half your schedule had to be against University (now DI) teams.

In 1965, while still a member of the College Division, UTA hosted New Mexico St, a 27-10 loss.

The Mavs officially joined the University Division in 1971. The first team they hosted was 19th ranked Toledo, a 23-0 loss.

The first high division win at home was against West Texas St, 20-7 in 1972.

Marshall's first hosted FBS team was a 52-17 win over Akron in 1997. (That WVU game was at WVU).

I like how you added to it.

TXST's first game and first win were Houston. That was the year after USM had upset them in the CUSA Championship and UH thought they were hot stuff. Got us a single top 25 vote.

Yes.

Yep, I misread the original post. Figured I was in too deep now at this point to change it.

This got me to thinking. Technically for us, it’s September 16, 1972, a 28-21 loss to The Citadel — our first home game against a University Division opponent in the Southern Conference. We played as an independent in 1971, but it looks like none of our home opponents were in the University Division.

First BCS game hosted would be Temple, I believe, too. In '99. Which is the better question, imo.

JMU almost had it's first FBS home game about 10 years ago against Ball State. JMU had negotiated a home-and-home, but just before it was signed, the MAC learned about it and put pressure on Ball State to not play at an FCS stadium.

We've played a neutral site game against WVU at FedEx field, which is closer to JMU than WVU, but MTSU will be our first FBS home game. Looking forward to it.

First D1 team we hosted was UL in 1975. We won - of course we won every game that year.

We haven't beaten UL on their home field since the game you reference other than the Malzahn run it again year. I think the game you reference might have been shortened by a tornado.

I played in that game in 1975....holding for our kicker, Raphael Septien. We were up 2 scores at the half, but couldn't stop y'all in the second. We got your back the next year at Cajun field. Cheers! 04-cheers

We were never 1-AA either.

Did you get any kicks blocked by stAte in 75. I think we still hold the D1 combined kick/punt blocks record with 11 that year.

According to our records, the first FBS team we hosted was LSU back in 1902 in our second year.

Our other two opponents that year were "Lake Charles" which I suppose was a high school team and "New Orleans AC" which I'm assuming is the New Orleans Athletic Club (which still exists today.) Times were certainly different back then.

Edit: A few more games of note for you:

1903 vs. Delcambre Academy - Win 105-0 (Delcambre is a VERY tiny fishing village on the Louisiana coast.)
1904 at "Company K" - 0-0 (Is this an Army team?)
1905 No games due to yellow fever outbreak (but muh freedoms!!!)
1923 vs. Southern Miss - Win 66-0 (Our first game against a Sun Belt team.)

Troy beat the Jags 31-10 on that soggy Saturday.

That was a fun trip. I also made my way up with a friend to watch Southern miss play Louisville during that monsoon. I’m sure USM fans remember. It was a MESS.

Our first-ever game and home game was a 30-0 win vs. the Hattiesburg Boy Scouts at Hattiesburg's Kamper Park, within which the zoo is now located.

First home game vs. an FBS-equivalent was Ole Miss in 1913, again at Kamper Park (13-7 L).

If I'm reading the records correctly, our first game vs. an FBS-equivalent after getting our own field was Louisiana in 1933 (6-0 W).

Related, I still chuckle at the guy on the CUSA board who shrugged off my statement that joining the Sun Belt would return us to our program's roots.
