EMU scored but 47-points and had it’s worse offensive game of the year. Monty being out hurt EmU in it’s two games.
I’ve said that EMU’s defense must create it’s offense. That didn’t happen in EMU as EMU did not play a pressure defense on the perimeter and try to force. EMU turnovers. As EMU had bit 5 steals in the game. EMU committed 54 more turnovers than KSU did.As a result KSU scored 5 more points than EMU did off of turnovers.
EMU was outscored by 22-points in the paint as EMU did not force KSU turnovers that lead to easy hoops, and did not attempt to fast break off of defensive rebounds. I said in anticipation of game that KSU strength of defending inside would go against EMU’s strength of it’s guards attacking the paint. EMU didn’t score well attacking the paint nor the rim, but did get to the foul-line.
KSU HC smartly played his interior defenders in a zone to take on all perimeter drives. He did fear EMU’s bigs scouring many points inside. He was right. He also pressured the three-point line and denied passes to EMU perimeter players.
There was no excuse for EMU’s excessive turnovers (19) and and 18 fouls.
More time-out should of been called to explain th players what was taking place and to stop KSU runs.
EMU’s defense held KSU to their fewest scoring points (56 points) in 7 MAC games. N.Scott starting at PF and Golson at SF helped EMU’s defense. Heath also smartly did not have them stray far from the rim or paint where they had been burnt in prior games. Result was low scoring by KSU. Defense only gave up 26 points in the first half, and 56 points in the game.
KSsU played with more intensity. Lot’s of KSU points were scored off of EMU turnovers as KSU denied EMU perimeter players passes. That were intercepted or thrown out of bounds. KSU also stoppedthe three ball by getting in EMU players grill. That’s what EMU needed to do as well. EMU didn’t do either.
In half court sets, Noah did not try to go inside to score enough. McBride did but he did not score inside but was fouled. Spottsville did not score inside.
EMU shot but 3-24 on three’s. No picks set for EMU’s three point shooters to get Noah or Scott open. No pick and rolls, no pick and pops. No inside-out plays to draw perimeter defenders in and thus provide EMU’s three point shooters open three’s. McBride was open but he kept jacking up three!s even though he was off. He shot but 1-9 on three’s.
Nate Scott’s three’s came close to going down, but he passed up some closer looks for deeper three!s.
EMU would have been far better off taking but 13 three’s as KSU did. They only shot 3-13 on three’s on far fewer three’s than than EMU took.
McBride scored 20 if EMU’s 47 points. But he shot but 3-13 the field, but was 13-13 from the foul line. His 3 fouls and 4 turnovers were bad. No other EMU players scored 10 or more points.
Noah scored but 1-point on 1-7 shooting.,He mostly just passed the ball and made no attempt to draw fouls on drives. His jumps shots were off as he jumped and brought ball to shooting pocket at the same. Such was all wrong. Suppose to get ball to shooting pocket with knees bent, then elevate and release ball. No one corrected his shooting form.
Observations:
Golson bb IQ. is bad.
Nije can’t rebound. Playing only 16-minutes, he committed four fouls and 3. Turnovers. Ballard should play and shoot far more than he has.
Binelli should not play,
To avoid turnovers, Spottsville needs to dribble first before ever driving to the hoop. He had no confidence in his jump shots and therefore avoided taking them. He scored but 4-points, as he shot but 1-6 from the field. He committed 2 fouls and 2 turnovers. Luka should have played some of his minutes.
Game to fast for Rice. Shouldn’t play till next season.
EMU should have attacked basket more than they did to either score or. draw fouls.
EMU’s conference schedule only gets tougher. Monty should be able able to play in the At Akron next Saturday.
Akron is an even bigger and more physical team than KSU. Heath will have a difficult time deciding between Spottsville, Golson, and Luca, who to play more as all three will have trouble scoring inside against Akron. Like to see Luca play more as he should provide scoring from outside, and make fewer mistakes. Also, want to see if Ballard take playing time from Njie and Golson.
One can only hope that Noah, Monty, McBride, NScott, and Ballard can provide the offense EMU needs. EMU needs to take care of the ball, attempt to force more turnovers, and fast break more.
