It would be easier to fly to Atlanta than drive from VA, but I'm not sure how many Monarchs travelled to GSU in our old CAA days. I would certainly try to hit up a game if I'm ever connecting through Atlanta and the timing worked out.

Marshall is a tougher place to visit geographically. Great place to be a visiting fan from what I'm aware of, but it's a decent drive to get out there from the 757. Hopefully as the football program rebounds, we'll bring more out to Marshall - I know I would love to make a trip eventually. I think GS would be in the same boat as Marshall - if we have a good product on the field more people will attend the farther away games.

Huh?

Directions:

Take I-64 from Norfolk to Huntington. Exit 15. Right off of ramp. Follow US60 West to Stadium.
Was thinking the same thing, its like 3 turns. It's just 7 to 8 hours I think was the point. I used to hit up snow show all the time and thats about 5-5.5 hours. I did the coastal trip for the bowl game there and back the same day, won't do that again if I don't have to. But I agree that we will definitely have a lot at most JMU games. That's a easy day trip if need be. App and Coastal are also both 5.5 or less so make good weekend getaways. Marshall isn't terrible but 7+ and I can see the crowds much much smaller typically.

I still need to get to Huntington myself. Away games are just far and between and I barely make home games anymore with 3 little kids and coaching 2 baseball teams. I'll start showing up to more away games as the kids get older.

Yeah even for us I was thinking Marshall is borderline for a one day trip, could be pretty rough depending on game time. I went to UNC and back in one day and towards the end of the drive I was really wishing we'd stayed the night, looks like that's about an hour less than Marshall. And I'm in Harrisonburg, a lot of JMU fans would be coming from Richmond, NoVA, etc.

Literally just in terms of distance. I know it's a straight shot!

RE: Sunbelt East - Away Crowds
I am just excited that for me at least, the trip to Norfolk is a relatively short one. We plan to be at every JMU@ODU game. Problem with living on the coast is that nothing is really close. Getting to Conway, SC is about the same distance as Harrisonburg and Boone. Huntington, Atlanta, and Statesboro are about the same distance, so I doubt those will be games we go to all the time.

ODU brought about 5-6k to Coastal. That probably wont be for a typical game because it was a bowl game but I think we will bring a few thousand to every Sunbelt east game.

So who travels the best and who needs to pick up the pace?

Don't recall ODU ever bringing more than a couple dozen to our place over the last 8 years. Maybe that will change but I don't see you guys traveling well to SBC east teams any more than CUSA east teams. Make me wrong , please. Not trying to be argumentative just pointing out what has happened as opposed to what you say will happen. Big difference in a bowl a couple hours away and a year in year out travel to a conference mate 4 or more hours away.

I don't disagree but the schools that have something else to offer besides the game are going to draw more fans (ODU and CCU). App is centrally located in the Sunbelt east so I think they will get a decent amount of away fans. Ga State has ATL. JMU, Marshall and GS are on islands in a way. I think they will travel well to other teams but I'm not sure how much other teams will travel to them. That being said I would like to get up to Marshall for an ODU game. Why does it seem like the weather is always crap when ODU and Marshall play in Huntington????

I take it you’re not a fan of mountains if App doesn’t have anything else to offer you besides the game

Ya I should have listed that. I haven't been to Boone for a game. When ODU played in Boone the first time it was right before taking my PE exam. I was pretty bummed I had to miss it. I live in Charlotte but have only been up to Boone one time for something else. Seemed like a pretty cool downtown/college town. I think you guys have plenty to offer traveling away fans + MOUNTAINS!!!!!! Love those damn mountains!

Statesboro is roughly 45 minute drive from Savannah not much further than Conway from Myrtle Beach. Another 15 minutes to the beach. Savannah site seeing nightlife and walking tours are second to none. New coliseum just opened and Bay Street and River street are blowing up with massive five star resort style accommodations along the river front. Much different than just a few years ago. Truly a destination city. You'd be pleasantly surprised to make the trip.

Quote:In addition to being one of U.S News’ top places to visit in the country, Savannah is also the No. 1 on the lists of the Best Places to Visit in Georgia, Best Relaxing Getaways in the USA and Best Cheap Romantic Getaways.

We have friends in Charlotte that would probably make a weekend out of it with us. Our friend in Charlotte played tennis at odu. Also have a place in Myrtle Beach. I expect we'll meet them in Charlotte or Myrtle for those away game weekends as the kids get older. That'll be fun.

If we are playing good, we travel pretty well. We seem to get a couple ACC games and they're very easy drives. So I think fans think those are as good as a bowl game. Games I plan on making if we're playing ok is: CCU (Myrtle Beach), App St and maybe a GaSt or Marshall. Can't do them all, will make 2 or 3 road games.

Funny I know of three different families from WV that retired in Myrtle. Seems a few from PA, NJ and WV down there.

I totally agree with you on Savannah. It is an amazingly beautiful city and we have enjoyed our visits there. Definitely rivals Charleston, New Orleans, St Augustine and Baltimore as tourist towns, IMO and we have visited all six cities.
