RE: Sunbelt East - Away Crowds
The vast majority of Marshall’s alumni reside in the Carolinas and Florida. The Atlanta Big Green/Alumni Chapter is one of the most active we have outside of WV. There’s a decent contingent of Herd Alumni in Richmond and NoVA too.
I think ODU, Coastal, Georgia State and App will be well attended each year. Georgia Southern and JMU are the unknowns.
Most of the Florida alumni reside in SoFLA but I think Georgia Southern will still see a decent number of alumni along with friends and families of the Herd’s FL and GA players on the roster. I think JMU will be swamped by Herd fans, especially the first time. Harrisonburg’s proximity to the eastern panhandle of WV, southeastern WV and then Richmond and NoVA will equal a lot of Kelly Green in town. I live in southeastern WV and Harrisonburg is a closer drive for me than Huntington, so I’m excited about it.

Wild Wing Cafe in North Myrtle Beach is home to most Herd game watching parties. They have a nice memorial to the 1970 Marshall team inside the bar.

But to be fair, I’ve been to a few away games to cheer on my Chants, and it’s always appeared to be between 500-1k fans. Except for when we play at SCar. We bring more fans to that game. But that’s not in the purview of your “in conference” question.
I’d be willing to bet that Marshall with travel well to Coastal. It’s a pretty common thing for West Virginians to move to Myrtle Beach, plus is probably our state’s top vacation destination.
Is this the root cause of the mullets in SC?

They just put a law into effect in NC banning the “squatted” trucks. Doing our part to clean up the Mullet head infestation.

ODU brought about 5-6k to Coastal. That probably wont be for a typical game because it was a bowl game but I think we will bring a few thousand to every Sunbelt east game.
So who travels the best and who needs to pick up the pace?
Georgia State fans hardly travel to Atlanta for their games so I'd say they are behind.
1. App
2. Marshall
3. JMU
4. Georgia Southern
5. ODU
6. Coastal
7. Georgia State
Yeah this seems fair. JMU generally travels well, but I know App and Marshall do too and I'm really curious to see how we do now that the in conference matchups are more attractive but not as many super short trips. Plus a bunch of good matchups instead of one big main attraction like the one FBS game, the FCS championship, or the NCAA tournament. Next year unless the date(s) or something screws with my plans I'll be sure to go to Louisville and whatever is on the road out of App/Marshall/ODU, maybe Coastal, maybe GSU. I'm wondering how many people will do the same and how many will just pick one or two.
I expect ODU fans to travel much better to JMU, CCU, and App, who are all closer than Marshall. If we start getting good again then I think travel will get better as well.

I expect ODU will bring decent numbers to JMU, App, and Coastal. Even if ODU is not so hot on the field, there should always be a smattering of ODU fans who will travel to JMU since it's so close.
It would be easier to fly to Atlanta than drive from VA, but I'm not sure how many Monarchs travelled to GSU in our old CAA days. I would certainly try to hit up a game if I'm ever connecting through Atlanta and the timing worked out.
Marshall is a tougher place to visit geographically. Great place to be a visiting fan from what I'm aware of, but it's a decent drive to get out there from the 757. Hopefully as the football program rebounds, we'll bring more out to Marshall - I know I would love to make a trip eventually. I think GS would be in the same boat as Marshall - if we have a good product on the field more people will attend the farther away games.

Here’s a tip for visiting fans traveling to Marshall. There are plenty of hotels in and around Huntington but there are only two downtown where all the restaurants, bars and shopping are located. There’s a Doubletree and a Delta by Marriott. Reserve a room shortly after the schedule is released because those two fill up first and in a hurry.

I turned 50 the middle of the month, have lived in WV 39 of my 50 years and have been to Myrtle Beach a total of 1 time, when I was 5.

You guys didn’t bring much to Boone back in 2016. Not that I’m ripping that because GS, Marshall, and JMU are the only ones that consistently will. Coastal did this year but we need to give it a few years to see if this is still a flash or not with them. I hope they keep it up. None of the other conference teams travel well to Boone. Granted, Boone isn’t the easiest place to get to. That’s documented….cough cough Hudspeth.

I went to Boone is 2016 with 7 others and had a great time. Stayed in Blowing Rock. Local fans were great. Will go again with no hesitation.

I’ll definitely come up Norfolk at some point. Didn’t make it in 2015. Was a monsoon that day so I ended up staying more local and going to the VT @ ECU game with my sister (ECU grad) and group.

I went to the Marshall, USM and ODU games at MTSU this year. Marshall brought a good crowd. USM brought a handful. ODU brought like 10 but I’ll give you guys credit, one of those ten was yelling start to finish.

The Big Green Scholarship Foundation usually hosts a tailgate for most away games. This season we had tailgates at Navy, FAU, Charlotte, App State, Middle Tennessee, North Texas and the New Orleans Bowl.

I went back through some of the Big Green’s tweets but don’t see anything now pertaining to the App State tailgate. I remember seeing something on it because I think it was going to be held in a bar/restaurant there. Maybe it ended up being cancelled as I can’t find anything online about it now.

The very first year we played Marshall you guys had a ton of people in Norfolk for that game. I think you guys were in first place of the conference and may have been ranked. You had a very big QB as well as running back for that game. Since that game, you all have not traveled well to Norfolk. As a matter of fact the only school in CUSA to travel well to Norfolk since that game was Charlotte, and that was this year.
