RE: Next Year / Randy Sanders Retirement
Since we are all speculating...it could have been made known during interviews that they wanted certain members of the coaching staff retained and Coach Quarles was one of the applicants that was ok with that. I could not imagine someone like Jeff Fisher not having the freedom to bring his own people.

I hope to god not, If I am looking for a head coach I want to be fully confident in him and him confident himself. Forcing assistants on him would be a no-go.
Trust him to do the job you hired him to do including hiring assistants.
Not just Fisher but I can't imagine any coach not having that freedom.
We didn't get the best man for the job but we got a really good puppet.

From the NDSU board apparently Roehl was making around 500K and is likely the next NDSU head coach, so I am not sure how much interest there was there from him.
I am a casual football fan at best, but I do wonder why Taylor has been passed over three times now. I wasn't in particular looking for him to get the position but I do wonder what is it that he doesn't have that ETSU is looking for?
Matt Entz is only making a base salary of $315,000, so wondering where they are getting a 500k figure on the OC at NDSU…
I agree though the hire is a little underwhelming…Not sure why they didn’t try to target a FCS OC with a high scoring offense, maybe Willy Korn or Bryan Ellis…Ohh well is what it is we’ll see what he can do

RE: Next Year / Randy Sanders Retirement
This hire has some parallels to the 1978 hiring of Jack Carlisle. Carlisle was legendary Mississippi high school coach who spent three seasons coaching the junior varsity of Ole Miss. He had no close ties to the region, but he was close to the ETSU president at the time, Arthur DeRosier Jr.
Carlisle's tenure at ETSU did not end well, but Quarles is not necessarily destined to repeat Carlilse's record. Quarles is a man of tremendous achievement. You can't win 11 state titles simply because you inherited a strong program. His experience at Furman is perhaps better preparation for the head coaching job at ETSU than Carlisle's experience at Ole Miss. While Quarles has a learning curve before him, there is reason to be hopeful.
Honestly, I was not excited to hear that Quarles had been chosen. Among the prospects outside the program, I was leaning toward Tyler Roehl. The rumor that he was making $500,000 per year was nonsense. According to an online listing of NDSU employee salaries, his annual pay is $115,000.
Perhaps some of us had visions of a Ruth's Chris meal (Jeff Fisher) and feel like we were taken to Denny's (George Quarles). However, I've had some decent meals at Denny's, and when this Denny's chef gets his own kitchen at ETSU, he may bring some scrumptious recipes with him. I have chosen to be hopeful about this hire.

I am not saying he should come in and fire everyone. No.
Coaches who want to stick around should be given a chance to meet with Quarles and
see how they mesh.
The two hires he needs to do immediately are OC and DC (since most are in agreement those 2 won't be back) Hire those guys.
Meet with each coach and the coordinator on that side of the ball, see if they can mesh or if they need, Quarles are the coordinator I would hope at least have a mental list of people they want on staff. Say they have a DL coach in mind but they like the current guy and he is willing (and able) to move to coach OLB.
but it would hurt the team to force coaches to work together.
If he keeps no coaches are all of them it should be up to him and
considered on an individual level, not as a group.

Guys, I went back to the Bison message board to see if I could find where I got that number for their OC. Couldn’t find it, so apparently I dreamed it or something. Sorry for trying to pass off incorrect info.

Watched the replay press interview portion of the presser. Well, he does seem to meet what someone on here said was necessary - good public relations type qualities. He appears sharp — does have a political science degree from Furman. He did talk some about the current staff, believe he said he has met with them and was sensitive to their situation — some could stay, some could go, that’s to be decided. Beyond that, I have no clue where this will go.

From the press conference it almost seems like a good ole boy hire on Carter's part.

Let us just hope the it works out and he becomes a great coach. That is all we can do as we have a championship team that will return about 90% of the players next year. Go Bucs and lets hope for the best!

Yes sir it has that feel. It’s a done deal now so we have to deal with it. I just can’t understand the justification here at all. Furman was anything but high powered offense. They made two playoff appearances in his time there but they were never great. It seems to be all about the history at Maryville. Really nice guy. Sharp and all class. I hope he wins like crazy here, loves it and stays a long time.
Maybe we’ve been spoiled by the home runs we hit with Forbes and Sanders. That’s very possible. This just feels like a single.

You can bet Carter did not make the final call on this hire — Brian Noland and the BOT finalized this one.

RE: Next Year / Randy Sanders Retirement
This was definitely a Scott Carter hire. Dr Noland made it clear that in his many discussions, Carter continually came back to Quarles evertime. Carter also said in his introductory remarks, how he looked up to Quarles for years and now had a chance to work with him.
IMO, Carter was intent on hiring Quarles day one. The national search and name dropping was nothing but an obligatory smoke screen.
Quarles football resume achievements are at the most highly successful high school program in Tenn, Maryville.
Since his departure, two head coaches have produced a 80-5 record, winning 2 state championships. Obviously, Maryville didn't miss a beat without Quarles.
Quarles hasn't, to this date, shown anything at Furman, his only college coaching experience, that would equate being the head football coach at ETSU.
Scott Carter has put his job on the line with current players, students, big donors and loyal fans because of his stated personal reasons and high school records, rather than what Quarles has accomplished in College football.
Lot of disappointment swirling around this hire. Hope Carter is right with his decision.

Can someone pull up the talk going on here when Sanders was hired?

Sanders said he wasn’t worried about the early signing period. We don’t graduate very many, so I can’t see how we could be “screwed.”

Quarles even said in the press conference that he wasn’t looking for this. Scott pursued him. I think you’re completely accurate here.
