No, they do not. We (i.e., GCU) see them as rivals, but ASU certainly does not see us as rivals. I do not think anyone in GCU would disagree with this assessment.
However, ASU is now playing us in most sports which is something they refused to do for years. For a university that 10 years ago was DII, playing out of Antelope Gymnasium (capacity 1,600), and had a little over 1,000 students attending the ground campus, I'd say GCU is trending in the right direction. Gives us another decade and I'd wager ASU will also be considering us crosstown rivals.
GCU wants to be everyones rival haha still laughing at how they created a fake rivalry with NMSU LMAO!!
Okay, I tried to communicate with you in a civil, reasonable manner. I am not sure who you are, but I am 100% certain it is pointless to engage with people whose only goal is to argue and poke fun at others. Finally, your fixation on GCU seems to indicate you view us as rivals even though you indicate otherwise. I hope you enjoy your life. I will mine as well. See ya.
It's Frank, he likes to stir the pot. While NMSU's main rivals are UTEP and UNM, I actually like our conference rivalry with GCU. Always fun games that draw well.
GO AGGIES!!!!
I do not know Frank from Adam, but thanks for letting me know. I will avoid his posts from now on. Most of the Aggies fans on here are fantastic and I learn a lot from them. Thanks for being one of those in the fantastic category.

GCO struggled with ASU's length but there are no teams in the WAC built like ASU size wise. So, the Lopes' small guards will be difficult to corral and their big men will be tough to keep off the boards.
It was an ugly shooting game for both sides. Since I could not watch the game, I am not sure if it was due to the "stellar" defense being played or just poor execution on the offensive side. I did notice we were mediocre from the charity stripe again (8-13). We need to make the freebies.
On a positive note, we are competing with a Pac-12 school and somewhat holding our own. KenPom seems to agree since we moved up 4 spots to 126 even with the loss.
GCU struggled to score in the paint due to ASU's length and hops. Late, in the game Gabe McGlothin started to score more easily but at that point, ASU was playing the clock more than GCU. GCU however missed a lot of open looks from behind the arc. I think early on Blacksher and Woods rushed their shots because of ASU's length but the offensive spacing was good enough that they could have taken a little more time on their shot release and follow-through. Really, ASU simply out hustled GCU for points; and got a little help offensive from the free-throw line by being the aggressor. In the bigger picture, I'm not sure how good ASU really is this season but GCU went toe-to-toe with them and didn't look overmatched.
Next week, NMSU plays Washington State in Pulman; a team that beat ASU by 22 (51-29) last week. Between this week's Aggie game against Loyola Marymount and next week's Aggie game against Washington State, GCU fans (and Aggie fans) should get a good gage of where their team stands versus NMSU. GCU toughest game of the season comes next week when the play undefeated San Francisco at the Phoenix Footprint Center.
Thanks Pistol for the insights. I am not sure if NMSU's game against Washington State will get us much closer to knowing anything though. Utah State beat NMSU by 27 then they proceeded to lose to BYU by 11. BYU was defeated by Utah Valley by 7 who then proceeds to lose to Southern Utah by 4. Southern Utah lost to Dixie State by 7. It is a crazy world of college basketball at the moment.

Some don’t care for Fantastic Frank’s style but he does have three undeniable qualities.
1. He knows how to get under the skin of rival fans like no other.
2. He is relentless.
3. He is a NMSU super fan.
I don’t have any issue with Frank. He’s always there to back up his team and state when there’s people talking trash. And even when they’re not lol And yeah he can get a little intense sometimes but it’s the internet. If GCU fans think they have it bad with him you should have seen him versus Utah St and Nevada fans in the old WAC. Now that was Frank in his prime. He’s actually pretty tame compared to those days.

Listen to McCants' interview at the 4 minute mark...
Now, when NMSU leaves for CUSA in 2023, I doubt this rivalry will continue. In the past, NMSU had conference rivalries with Indiana State, UNLV, Western Kentucky, and Utah State that dissipated once realignment changed conference membership. In 2023, UTEP will become our main rivals even above UNM and any other CUSA member.
Oh, the dreaded half court McCants shot!! McCants might not think of it much, but I admit that one still hurts. Nice that he is in the weight room thinking "beat GCU" when doing reps though.

Personally I would not count item #1 as a quality, and item #2 is only a quality if one's relentlessness is aimed at something positive. Not sure if getting under the skin of rival fans constitutes a positive. Finally, not sure why we should excuse the behavior of people just because "it is the Internet."

I never said anything about the word positive lol some stuff is positive, acceptable and humorous to one person while the same stuff is offensive and unacceptable to another. I don’t take much of anything on here or anywhere too serious or personal and I just have fun with it. If I didn’t I would never be able to have my great discussions with the Fantastic InstantaneousTexan.
NMSU and GCU had a conference rivalry in basketball. I don't expect it to continue and I wouldn't say the "schools" have a rivalry, just the basketball teams because we are the main WAC powers. And that's the extent of it.
And I miss the UNLV days and the Utah State era and their fans. I still consider Utah State our rival and probably always will.
It would be nice if the NMSU GCU games would continue after our move to CUSA to officially establish a rivalry. We will need an OOC rivalry since UTEP will become a conference one.

He fights with anyone and everyone. He is obsessed with GCU yet says there is no rivalry. Last year, he even bashed Jans because we weren’t winning every game. He just called all our football players losers and didn’t want any to return. He is negative about everything, he’s a caveman and he loves to dish it out but turns tail when NMSU loses. Far cry from a super fan.

Lamar falls at UT Arlington 56-47. Lamar was horrible the first half trailing by 19 at the half. Lamar shot 3 of 29 in the first half. No excuse, but fact is Lamar was missing four starters for this game due to injuries or illness. It has been at least three weeks since Lamar has had all of its starters for a game. Cards may not be as bad as their record indicates.

Bad afternoon for the WAC. Lamar, SHSU, and CSU all went down.
I can hardly believe NMSU played that poorly and won on the road.
26 turnovers, no field goals the last 7+ minutes of the game. As Jack Nixon said, where is Rod Serling, because this was one weird game, from The Twilight Zone.
Aggies beat Loyola Marymount 63-58.
Next up Wazzu.
