Did ODU fans defend C-USA's strategy? I thought pretty much everyone over there realized not long ago that market focus wasn't the ideal way to go once they saw the product and lack of interest.
Regional rivalry are where it's at. There is an entire weekend dedicated to regional rivalries yet the powers that be seem to avoid it at all costs.
Well...They got into CUSA off that strategy, not defending it would be weird.
I don’t recall any ODU fans ever preaching the Gospel of Marketz. Their fans typically came down on the side of good football and fan support as I recall. The Marketz stuff was championed more by fans of schools that had nothing else to contribute, like the F_Us and the AACk dregs.
I remember right before they left, UNT fans going on and on about their geographic location relative to the Dallas market, and not listening to anyone who pointed out that half of Dallas likely has no idea who they are, and another strong percentage might but probably aint watching unless Texas and A&M are not playing.
UNT, F_U, MTSU, Charlotte, and even Georgia State to an extent have all defended markets because that's all they have.
No offense GS Atlanta (not Statesboro)

RE: ODU Football
If the Sun Belt is short a bowl teams could they work with ES0N to get ODU placement if c-USA won't? It seems odd and be more of a favor than anything, obviously.

I had looked into this possibility, but it depends who the SBC shorts. Three of our 5 bowls are tied into ESPN, so the 4 letter would do the placing there.
Only way would be if the SBC shorted Mobile, and they were able to guarantee enough traveling fans from ODU to make it worth it, but that's a long trip.

RE: ODU Football
I have faith we will be invited. Preferably against a Sunbelt team - which would encourage our fans to travel. But we’ll see how the chips fall. It will be what it will be. My dream bowl would be against: VT or UVA but I know that is not in the cards. Perhaps another year.

If ESPN is looking for an interesting product, ODU is a shoo-in. We have a habit of turning every dull game into an adventure.

Uh...none...taken?
If it weren't for our location, we might still be FCS. We're in our 12th season. We're the third best team in the best G5 conference. (Just go with it.) If it took playing the market angle to be in that position vs. still being in the CAA, it sure looks like we made the right choice.

I feel like we're gonna get screwed with this bowl stuff.
What do yall think? We actually win CUSA is 2022?
The squad will have something to be crabby about.

I doubt it. It was their golden ticket into the FBS in a conference. They basically said, "We'll deal with the BS later." Great move for them.

In retrospect, I’m not even sure we did get in with that. That was my presumption, and probably a lot of other people too given that we came in with Charlotte and UTSA, both large markets. Norfolk is a decent-sized market but not a game changer if that was your forte; our big argument was that we were the top game in town. We were kind of a hybrid; not too big, not too small, not too new, not too old. Like 4D Goldilocks.
I think with the AAC very obviously taking a markets approach while the SBC took us along with three smaller metros with good football puts us in the tradition of the latter, even though we didn’t have football 20 years ago.

We all said that the AAC would be wise to go for a mix of market potential and established tradition. They weren't allowed to do that by ESPN so they went all markets and ESPN pushed the market/tradition move for the Sun Belt. So they damaged the AAC's value, increased the Sun Belt's and end up with the same airtime for less expenditure with likely slightly less revenue, leading to a net positive for them.
