This sucks.

Why not App State or Louisiana? ESPN?

Good programs but zero eyeballs or markets brought. ESPN isn't going to pay top dollar for a market than consists of 20 thousand people.

Maybe you add App and Louisiana after you secure some major markets first.

Marshall is in Huntington, the #74 market with 427k HOMES, and we control our market.

As for our TV ratings, we have better ratings than most of the teams left in the AAC.

Marshall Average rating per channel since 2013:

ESPN: 1.804 Million
CBS: 1.25 Million
ESPN2: 751,757
ESPNU: 435,500

There's really no good addition to make. There are certainly bad ones, but none from any conference other than the MW are good enough to raise us up.

or, if the MWC made a play for Tulsa and SMU, the AAC could then make a shift east and add Marshall, ODU, UAB and Charlotte. Good markets, plenty of eyeballs, good basketball and plenty of potential. Most importantly geographic sensibility and actual rivalries.

You’re right, Memphis should just leave and join the Big 12. Unbelievable they haven’t thought of that yet!

Tulane is not ever going to surround itself with ULL, ULM, Troy, Arkansas State, etc. Won’t ever happen. Zero in common with those schools.

Memphis will get its invite at some point. Regarding Tulane, who do they have anything in common with in the AAC or CUSA? Maybe Rice? SMU? We're all in this together and its not like any of us can really turn our nose up at anyone else at this point. The goal should be to be with teams that make sense geographically and competitively, will be attractive to regional TV and sell tickets to fill stadiums and generate press.

Tulane will not join the sunbelt. Enjoy the Big 12. If Tulane was invited instead of UC, I don’t think you’d appreciate me posting that “it just makes sense for UC to join up with the MAC schools where there real rivals are.” Stop it. Go to the other board.

Exactly. I don't have anything against the Sun Belt, but USF is not joining the Sun Belt. I'm amazed that people on there way out the door try to fit us into other conferences that they wouldn't join either if left behind.

The obvious move for the AAC (from my perspective which makes it highly unlikely) is to add...

UAB and Marshall from CUSA
App St and Louisiana from the Sun Belt

That secures the AAC as the best G5 league in the central and eastern time zones and will be better on the field than the MWC. Definitely a focus on football but without a lot of obvious two-sport adds in the East it provides the most bang for the buck.

No HBCU other than Howard will ever even think about joining FBS again. FAMU wasted tens of millions on an aborted attempt. What are you doing with the basketball schools, too? It's clear basketball is not driving anything.

Is it insane? Absolutly

The league needs accepts its fate as a true mid-major. Respectability is gone, and the AAC cannot be repaired. Now Its just what would ESPN fill its time slots on ESPNU.

It really does suck because The American is probably the conference that we all belonged the best in.

Nah it never needs to accept that fate. You never accept being second class even if you are.

Good mix of football, basketball, baseball, markets, potential.

Try to get VCU Olympics.

Charlotte needs to announce a football stadium expansion pronto.

Under the circumstances, I would seek membership applications from be UAB, Charlotte, Louisiana Tech, and UTSA. Old Dominion and Georgia State would be on the short list to expand to 14.

Yes. Second largest school in the state with 20k enrollment. New airport opening any day now. Lafayette is the center of Acadiana, Cajun country, with 2019 census 1.4m. Lafayette metropolitan statistical area 490k, third largest in the state behind BR and NOLA. Will start $65M stadium renovation after this season or latest after 2022. Top 20 attendance in both diamond sports, top 10 in recent years. I'm happy to stay in the belt, especially if USM joins. I'm like most, would prefer to play more games within driving distance. Last game with tulane in the dome, we had over 50k in attendance. We played them at there place 5 or 6 years ago, lost in OT. It's a natural rivalry, snobs vs working class!

I doubt we get an invite to AAC, and at this time, not sure that would be our best option. We're only 50 miles down I10 from the 2019 national champ, so better opponents for home games would help attendance. Our stadium renovation will reduce max occupancy from 41k to about 34k.

The new adds are going to be UAB, UTSA, FAU, and Marshall. AAC will still be a very good football league but will take a huge hit in basketball.

Whatever. Talking about Plan C options now just re-enforces the fact that what's left in the AAC and what we could pickup means the football product has declined - significantly. So much for AAC being part of the "Power 6"

To make matters worse, we are stuck with Aresco through 2025 or probably have to pay him through that date even if we fire him.

Probably not although all four would also come closest to maintaining the AAC's 30K attendance threshold. If winning and support are important, those are the top 4 not already in the American.

That's kind of where I'm at too...is it going to be that much different money-wise after the dust settles? Probably not.

Would you rather have geographical rivalries back (ECU playing ODU/App State/Coastal every year et. al) or be flying halfway across the country and not caring about your opponents for your AD to be getting $500,000 more every year? To me, having closer, regional institutions is kind of the way of the future for the non-P5, because the money isn't there to support it. If Cincinnati didn't get a liferaft out, I'd be saying the same thing honestly.

Geographic rivalries back? We've only played ODU 3 times in history, App hasn't been a yearly opponent in close to 50 years, and we've never played Coastal.

Exactly. He would not be saying the same thing if Cincy was in this position. App would eventually be a rival again, there's history there and chirping there for years that does matter. Coastal and ODU no ECU fan cares about. We play coastal in zero sports, not even baseball weirdly enough with them being close and both of us being really good programs.
We've played y'all 10 times, last in the NOLA bowl. Good fans on both sides.

Louisiana also has a strong research emphasis which would make it a better academic fit.
