Don’t listen to him. App would consider it, and is in the discussion. It does depend on who is invited to determine if it is worth it. Any G5 football league trying to build the strongest conference will try to get the best programs available. How many doctoral programs you have has absolutely nothing to do with it at the G5 level.

DG knows people. Talks to people. Gets the vibe from the highest of highs.

His comment about us no considering it is predicated on the schools that it is believed the AAC will go after. But if they go after schools we all think that they should to cement their football brand, App says yes. But that is the difference between us and C-USA. We play football, we are the Sun Belt. Football and baseball, football and baseball. East Carolina actually fits in culturally with the Sun Belt far better than the AAC, but ECU has ties with the programs in the AAC that pre-dates the urban versus rural debate in college athletic affiliation.

I’m a top 500 donor to AppSt Athletics.

ECU, Marshall, USM and UAB. Let’s make it happen. Lol

If only that were possible.

If ECU had the cash to leave the AAC, that would be a better move for them. Some uneducated fans may grumble about it but anyone who has been paying attention knows that the Sun Belt is in position to compete with the MWC as the G5's top football conference.

If they go for Market schools, yet the Sun Belt adds football brands Marshall and USM, they will be in trouble. USM could resurrect themselves in a conference based around Southern rivalry games.

Honestly, looking at it, the Sun Belt very closely matches the footprint of the SEC. It's not really a surprise that growth has happened considering football is life in the south.

RE: Honest question about AAC
It's not as simple as a yes or no IMHO. I would hope our administration would ask a lot of hard questions to know what the projected makeup of the American is before any paperwork is submitted. As a fan I'd say no but I truly don't know what the school would say.

Great thing about being a stAte fan. We know we're not going anywhere so we don't have to waste any time thinking about it.

RE: Honest question about AAC
As some have said here it really depends on who they go after. Because when everything stops spinning the AAC will have most likely also lost Memphis, SMU, Wichita State, Navy and probably Tulsa. That leave Tulane, Temple, ECU and maybe Tulsa.

As a Marshall fan the only program I half way respect and would care about is ECU. If they go after "Market Value" and "Potential" schools, those schools who have proven they can't draw that market or have tried over and over but have failed over and over, then No Thanks. That is another reason Marshall fans want out.

Go after the strongest programs no matter where they are located is a different story.

Then it's a battle of the good ol' boy club. Let's go!

And let's get on the same page fellas. We either want to go or we don't want to go. We want to go if certain schools are added, we don't want to go if we run the risk of joining C-USA v 2.5 that is a basketball conference. Not that App can't compete in basketball, because they certainly could. But we are in the south and football is King.

RE: Honest question about AAC
Every team realizes that its not the AAC of yesteryears, and with the newest departures, we are much closer to the top of the G5 than we've ever been. I also think just about every team realized that if we stick together, and make some key additions, its very possible we could reach that top spot. However, I think its like a prisoners dilemma. School's are afraid that they don't seek and accept an offer to move over, someone else in our conference would, and then we would just be weaker and they'd be left holding the stick again. If the presidents could come together and agree to this, they could do something like set a much higher exit fee that no one could afford. And it could just be for a short time period like 2 years, to weather through this realignment period, and then could go back to what it was. If the AAC were to also lose Memphis, and we add Marshall, USM, and a couple other teams, I really think we could overtake them no matter who they add.

I think with the proposed addition of USM, Marshall, ODU and JMU the SBC would be as strong top to bottom of the MWC every year and AAC some years. Definitely above the MAC, not just a few year trend thing but permanently.

That would be predicated on USM's increased visibility improving recruiting and fan interest again. True geographic rivalry games, or those with potential, would undoubtedly help USM. I think ODU will be fine in a few years with the head coach that they hired.

If those schools you mention end up being the ones they want to take, you say no. If they end up going after Marshall and Louisiana, you say yes.

It all depends on who else is being brought in. Though I think the university cultural dynamic can be overstated. There is one school in the AAC that is not like the others. That program has its campus in a "small market" but like App is a state school and it's influence extends far beyond where it's brick and mortar are. Of course you know who I'm talking about, and that would also be a big reason to say yes, if the opportunity comes, especially if Marshall and Louisiana were offered as well.

As for Coastal, I expect their academic profile to take a big jump over the next five years, similar to App. They are going to get a ton of new applications due to the exposure they are receiving from football right now. If they ride the wave like App State did really beginning in 2006-2007, they may be able to cement a foundation that allows them to continue to grow their brand and academics while maintaining excellence in their athletics department. They have Joe Moglia who didn't rise to become CEO of TD Ameritrade by being unable to have a strategic outlook.

I would agree with your premise on WF & Duke if the ACC was putting together a conference today, but it was an entirely different world in 1954.

I don’t think getting on the same page is necessary. It’s too early to determine if the AAC is actually going to place App in a stronger football league or not, and what the revenue projections will be with the AAC’s new members. We are in a great position to evaluate what the best move for us as this evolves. I’ve advocated for the SBC to take the opportunity while they have momentum and strength. The industry may want to wait until the AAC makes the first move. Personally, I think there is going to be a lot of positioning that will involve groups of teams to one conference or another… this feels like it could take most of the season unless a certain group of schools get what they want sooner.

As a side note: I think the AAC looking west will fail, but if it doesn’t, things could move fast in the east.
