I spent some time perusing the comment sections of some of the sites that ran with this story and it's all negative. Not what the school needs. We just had a nice bump from the women's softball playoff run and now that has been replaced with this crap. Are there prospective students now crossing JMU off of their list of candidate schools?

If part of the program is "don't tell anybody about the program", then JMU knew it was because something like this would happen. How can they be so dumb as to think no one was going to tip off the media about such a controversial program? Or that the media wouldn't pounce on it? Someone didn't think far enough ahead.

And what does that say of JMU if they think so lowly of their incoming class that they felt it necessary to explain to them how to judge a cherry picked category of people?

Wouldn’t it be ironic if the oppression training was oppressed by the very same rich, white, heterosexual men that the oppression trainers categorized as the oppressors? Will the training guide be updated to include “JMUs Top Donors” to the oppressor list?

Is it really national news if it's only reported by one network? I too would like to see the training video. If one report on Fox makes anybody "cancel their donations" that's a shame. Until I have seen the material, the Fox headline is just a click-bate link as much as a "you won't believe what happened next" article that comes up from buzzfeed/etc.

History fact: white/Christian/male/straight have exerted power/privilege over marginalized demographics more often than the other way around. If you can't grapple with this fact then nobody can help you. Understanding history is how we learn and understand how to prevent history from happening again.

I do think that where somebody missed the mark here was when they tried to prevent its distribution by asserting it was proprietary. If it's truly about fostering an inclusive environment and educating about oppression history, then mark it to be freely disseminated.

And what of the Africans that rounded up and sold africans to the Spanish and English? People just seem to love ignoring historical facts if it helps them be hysterical or claim victim status.
