Dennis Colleran (‘21) had a dominant season for North this past season, leading the Hockomock in wins (6), IP (37), ERA (0.38), and second in K’s (64). Best pitch is his fastball topping out at 97. He’s committed to Northeastern and is a projected mid-day 2 pick (rounds 5-7)

RE: '21 MLB Draft
Jared Dupere was taken by the Giants in the 13th round, 386th overall.
2nd CAA player selected today. UNCW ace Landen Roupp was taken by the Giants in the 12th round.
Congrats to Jared! We'll see if he decides to sign...

RE: '21 MLB Draft
NU incoming freshman and Queens native SS Michael Sirota was selected by the Dodgers in 16th round (492 overall).
Sirota's mom is the niece of late Yankee legend Whitey Ford (and Queens native).
Congrats to Michael, but I assume he'll be on campus in the fall.

RE: '21 MLB Draft
That's it for the draft.
Dennis Colleran was passed over by teams because of a signability question (which I was aware of).
The difference between Keane and Colleran was that the Red Sox took a flyer in 2019, even though his family had a $1M price tag on breaking his NU commitment.
This year no one took a flyer on Colleran apparently.
Great for NU! Now let's hope Sirota doesn't sign...

RE: '21 MLB Draft
Here's what New England Baseball Journal had to say about Colleran not being drafted...
https://www.baseballjournal.com/2021-mlb...10-rounds/
2. Dennis Colleran Jr. not getting drafted
It’s difficult to make sense of this one. Colleran was arguably the top pitcher for the Northeast region’s Area Code Games team in 2020, when he showcased a 97-mph fastball against the stars of the Futures League as well as the top high school players in the nation. He also earned MVP honors for the champion GBG team at the Perfect Game World Championships.
This spring, he was dominant at North Attleboro High, leading the Hockomock Conference in wins (6), innings pitched (37) and ERA (64), while he was second in strikeouts (0.64). Recently, he’s been flashing a 97-mph fastball as the closer for the Worcester Bravehearts in the Futures League. Unless signability was a concern for MLB scouts, it’s hard to imagine how Colleran slipped out of the top 10 rounds. It will be Northeastern’s gain for the next three years.
###
Awesome! A motivated and pissed Colleran coming to NU. Love it!

RE: '21 MLB Draft
What are the likelihoods of each of our players signing? I'm not too familiar with the typical process.

The money available for Dupere, Dufault and Malgeri is way less than $100K.
They can make more getting a full-time job after graduation.
For example, the Dodgers had the last pick of the 10th round (312th overall). The money slot for that selection is $142K.
To sign our guys a team would have to blow out the money slot for that particular round they were drafted in. A team gets penalized for signing a player out of the allotted slot money if they try to offer more (i.e. a draft pick loss).
So those guys would have to sign for the allotted cash if they really want to start their MLB careers.
In Michael Sirota's case, he's a high schooler who could decide to sign and get into an organization. But I doubt he does too IMO.

Makes sense, thanks for the explanation

There were a few things that I should have clarified with this...
When I was talking about blowing out slot to sign, I meant to say this applied to the Dodgers trying to sign Michael Sirota. Not Dupere, Malgeri and Dufault. So I shouldn't have said our guys.
Dupere, Malgeri and Dufault are 3+ year players. So even though the money in the rounds they were selected isn't good, they're likely going to sign.

The MLB draft pick signing deadline was Aug. 1st at 5pm EST and it has come and gone.
Sirota didn’t sign with the Dodgers, meaning he will be on campus at NU for the next 3 years!
Can’t wait to see him play next spring!
