Howard would have moved anyway. They moved 6 programs to the NEC. My guess is if the MEAC collapses that they will join the NEC full time.
There are no schools or conferences for the Sun Belt to pull from:
Conferences And Number Of Playing Members Around The Sun Belt
Big South 9 schools
ASUN 7, 8 When Central Arkansas joins
CAA 7 schools
CUSA 8, 9 when Coastal Carolina joins
Horizon 11 schools
MAAC 11 schools
MVC 5, 6 when SIU Edwardsville joins
NEC 9, 10 When Howard joins
Patriot 10 schools
SoCon 7 schools
Summit 6 schools
The BE, B10 and ACC are out of the question as they are in 3 of the top 5 college soccer conferences.
There are absolutely no programs looking to move and the Sun Belt isn't strong enough to to get anyone excited enough to change conferences. So yes in a few years if not next year Appalachian State would have been looking for/in a new conference. And the one of two conferences that would have won out would have been the MAC or SoCon.
When next year comes around there will only be 1 count them 1 independent college men's soccer program in Chicago State and then no one wants anything to do with that university.
