RE: Portal update
Not surprised with Mitchell, something had to give with all the talent being brought in at RB. I imagine there will be others to follow as we get through next year and playing time/roles are defined.
Good riddance to Robinson, truly didn’t understand why he was still out there at times. He may have been a good blocker but that was it. I’ve said it before but I really like the kid coming in from Simeon, Gumbs. good size and from the tape it looks like he can actually make some catches.
Eventually we will need to limit some of this turnover in order to build some depth but since I think we have another 1-2 seasons before seriously contending I’m okay with it. Let hammock get all “his guys” and if we are in the same spot 2 years from now there are no excuses.

I would argue the age that matters would be the age of guys who actually play.
Thrower? Labus? Maybe under Carey and a short handed hammock squad they got some time...but for the most part these guys who left aren’t really anyone.
Not that their practice contributions did not count, but I am just saying the age of the guys on the field is only going up.
If hammock can land a transfer at CB, TE, and maybe a S I would say this team is coming together quite nicely.
Plus experience would matter more to me than age. There are going to be a lot of kids out there - but next season they have all played.
Heck, the offense is a veteran group at this point. Tucker/Richie/Rudolph are all vets. Collins/Waylee both guys who played a ton. The OLine is all back. QB has played a ton. Transfer HBack has played a ton.

With all these guys leaving it opens scholarships for JuCo and Portal guys to come. Im curious as to who ends up being a Huskie that we know nothing about yet.

His highlight tape would come from one game. The most overhyped Florida recruit we ever got.He will never be able to say that he didn’t have the opportunity to shine. We tried everything to make him a Star.

There are things you don’t know that would say otherwise. Like how the coaching staff knew Robinson needed surgery but decided it could wait so they weren’t short handed. He played the entire 2019 season injured (creds to the coaching staff). So yes, Robinson needs to develop and learn to catch more. But let’s look at the situation holistically.

Holistically, he couldn't catch a cold before 2019 nor after 2019 so not really sure what one injury plagued season has to do with anything. Sounds like a great dude, willing to play through that for his team, but we need great dudes who also produce. Best of luck to him!

At this point the only spots I worry about the depth is at DT & Safety, and they both are more concerns about the quality of the depth than the actual numbers. Griffen or Taylor coming off a season ending injury, i forget which. The other one healthy. Ester. Then 4 guys who haven't taken a college snap, 3 of which are true freshman. Little concerning, especially if there are any injuries. I wouldn't be surprised to see Oppong go back to DT. At safety, the top 4 guys are locked in, but there is nothing but walk on's behind them.
We will be young again, but unlike this season, there will not be a large number of true freshmen or guys with zero collegiate snaps starting. In fact I have a hard time seeing any of the true freshmen getting much playing time unless there are injuries.

RE: Portal update
Just curious, when players leave, is it sometimes the result of a coach having a conversation with the player and basically saying you're not going to get the playing time you're looking for, or best to look for greener pastures? Just wondering how often it's initiated by the player or prompted by the coach.

Yes. I'm guessing coaches/players are still adjusting those discussions to the new'ish transfer rules. That conversation probably used to be a more rare after their freshman season. Now, that's a conversation can be had every year. And if they're not yet, I think most good coaches in CFB will have a process to be clear on the evaluation and what could come next, and give the players options, because you don't want players that are unhappy with their roles.
I think it's probably a more complex conversation than 'you're going to play or you're not going to play', because certainly guys can grow, they may be great role players and like being on the team/NIU, etc.

I think it is intiated by the coaches so sometimes. IMO, in this new environment they reveiw the roster as a staff and have realistic discussions, especially after year 2.
Hammock coached under one of the all-time GMs in the history of the NFL and he reviews his roster all those lines. NFL is always looking for that one guy and it is important to look at as many players as possible. He was granted schollys to 5 walk ons from last year's class.BTW, strange as this may sound those 2 QBs that left were good football players. It's just a very crowded room at this point and they are not moving Fletcher and Lombardi out of the way.

How many are in portal for all college teams. My guess is every team has a lot more than previous years.

I think we are going to find that over half of these(from all schools) are coach driven.
On paper it sounds like guys can go wherever - but what it seems to be used for is coaches to be able to turn over the bottom of the roster.

Agree Chillia. They. need that scholly. Back in the day they ran guys off with **it drills. Moving WRs to Dline... Constant Oklahoma drills where they are over matched.

At least on paper, it looks like CMU has picked up a big time QB on the portal- Simon from Washington. CMU is the team in our conference that scares me more than any other.

Good luck to Robinson, but viewed him as someone stopping the progress from another WR as they just look at his size.
McCray was a Carey guy too. Like mentioned earlier in this post, I’ve wouldn’t be surprised to see him transfer too based on what’s been happening. Makes sense why Hammock has had these huge signing classes

NIU does have a larger amount of portal transfers leaving than anyone else in the MAC (13 & the next highest is 8). If you look at the schools who are losing players to the portal it is teams with coaching changes, and bottom tier losing G5 teams. Sadly NIU is both of those right now.

32....What’s your take on why McCray didn’t get more time rather than Robinson last year?
