RE: 2020 football coaching changes
I don’t think it was posted anywhere on this board but FAU lost our DC, Leavitt to SMU then replaced him the next day with Mike Stoops.

Decent hire should actually be an upgrade, best of luck.

Congratulations. When Littrell finally kicked Bowen to the curb, I wanted UNT to target Stoops for our DC position. If FAU's defense is better than UNT's in 2021, than I will be furious with Seth all over again. For the record, when we hired Bowen (who I thought was a bad hire from the beginning), I wanted Leavitt. I guess FAU has a knack for landing the coaches I want.

Quote:A Conference USA school has basically annexed one of FCS’s best offenses
It’s not news when an FCS coordinator takes an FBS job. It’s also not news when an FCS player moves up a level. But what if they all leave the same FCS school for the same FBS destination?
Such is the case at Western Kentucky, where Tyson Helton’s Hilltoppers have, in turn, secured Houston Baptist’s offensive coordinator, quarterback, and top three wide receivers.
The great migration began on Dec. 14, when WKU announced the hiring of Zac Kittley as the Hilltoppers’ new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Included in WKU’s press release announcing Kittley’s hire was this passage:
In an abridged 2020 season, the success of HBU’s Air Raid passing offense made headlines throughout the country. In only four games, senior quarterback Bailey Zappe completed 141-of-215 passes (65.6%) for 1,833 yards, with 15 touchdowns and one interception. A trio of wide receivers – Jerreth Sterns, Josh Sterns and Ben Ratzlaff – combined to produce 89 receptions for 1,256 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Zappe and the Huskies put up 480 pass yards and three scores at North Texas, 406 and five scores at LA Tech, and 380 and three scores at Eastern Kentucky, but the most notable performance was against Kittley’s former school.
At Texas Tech, Zappe completed 30-of-49 passes for 567 yards with four touchdowns, as the Huskies dropped a 35-33 heartbreaker even though they entered the game as 40-point underdogs. The 567 pass yards were the most ever for an FCS player against an FBS defense. At 458.3 yards per game, Zappe’s average ranks 83.3 yards above the leading FBS passer (Kyle Trask of Florida – 375 yards per game) in 2020.
Five days later, WKU announced the Sterns brothers as part of its 2021 early signing class. Junior Jerreth Sterns caught 47 passes for 454 yards and five touchdowns in four games last fall, and freshman Josh Sterns hauled in 13 balls for 403 yards and four scores.
Eight days after that, on Dec. 27, Zappe left Houston Baptist for WKU.
And then today, Ben Ratzlaff announced he’s joining the rest of the Houston contingent in Kentucky.
In six weeks, Western Kentucky has secured one of FCS’s top young offensive coordinators, one of the subdivision’s most productive quarterbacks, and his top three receivers. Ratzlaff caught 29 passes for 399 yards and three touchdowns in four games last fall.
This is an offense that, again, threw for 567 yards — the most ever by an FCS team against an FBS opponent — in a near-upset of Texas Tech. Zappe also threw for 480 yards against North Texas and 406 against Louisiana Tech. The Brothers Sterns and Ratzlaff caught the majority of those passes.
And now all the talent that made that happen up and left for Western Kentucky.

I really don't like seeing this kind of "recruiting". Nothing against WKU per say --the Toppers are simply playing by the rules-- but, I don't like the rules around this. I don't think it's good for college football. IMO, schools shouldn't be able to essentially recruit someone elses' offense. Or defense, etc... I believe the NCAA needs to put some restrictions or limits on how many players a team (in this case, WKU) can take from another team in the transfer portal. Should probably be limited to two.

ESPN reporting Gus Malzahn headed to UCF. Gus is due about $5 mil a year from Auburn through 2024 regardless of how much UCF pays so does he give UCF a "discount" or is Gus about to get straight up paid big bucks again when you combine the two salaries for the next 4 football seasons??? (numbers may be off a few but not by much i don't believe)

I've heard he's going to make at least as much as Heupel $1.7M and get a significant assistant pool to play with.

UCF may have lost a decent AD but they fleeced Tennessee and upgraded their coach. Tennessee should have went with Billy Napier at ULL or Jamey Chadwell at Coastal Carolina.

Danny White was a really good AD, but his hiring of Heupel (in hindsight) makes me question if he was "great". CJH was a great offensive coach but really lacked in so many other areas necessary to be a HC.
White hiring him away so we could hire Gus was fantastic. A lot of fans on the UT board are wondering why they got CJH when Gus was sitting there and available.

UT has a big checkbook, why not go for the Bearcats coach, but UT has a recent history of bad coaching hires.

Im still not sold on Fickell. I think he lucked into Freeman as DC and had 2 decent recruiting classes. Now that Freeman is at ND lets see what happens.
At the beginning of our search Freeman is who I wanted. After that it was 1A and 1B with Brian Johnson (Florida OC) and Charles Huff.
If Tennessee really wanted to open the check book up then why not go after Bronco Mendenhall (Virginia HC) or Matt Campbell (Iowa State HC) both their salaries start at 4 million.

Couldn't happen, when they fired Pruitt the UT president went on a big rant about morality. No way could they ever pull the trigger on Freeze after that. Well they could have, Randy Boyd would just look like a major hypocrite then.

...It's almost as if the University of Tennessee leaders are not really college football fans, so they don't keep up with "who's who" in college football. Then, they get asked to pick a new coach every 2 or 3 yrs, at which time they demonstrate that they have no clue who to pick, or what to do.
