That's a good fit for Will and USM.

not yet, there will be several other openings coming in the next couple of weeks. Always are.

If I was Napier, I wouldn't take the USC job either. Like I said earlier, it's a graveyard for your coaching career. That program needs a total reconstruction, starting with their fanbase, their perception and expectations of themselves is totally out of whack with reality and their own history. Is Beamer a guy who can change all that, I doubt it but then again I'm not a USC-Columbia fan.

I'm sure Napier, Chadwell, Satterfield (and others) know this and said "thanks but no thanks".

James Franklin went from Vanderbilt to Penn State, and I'd argue Vandy is an even harder job than USC is. Not sure there are any coaching grave yards in the SEC.

In my mind when P5s hire they give way too much weight to the names of the program on the list and the names of the guys they've worked under. And if the Gamecock board is a barometer their fan base thinks the same.

I welcome your disagreement. Their history of coaches states otherwise. You're welcome to look it up.

Napier is the best fit for UNC once Mack Brown finishes the rebuild.

I agree. I lived just outside of Columbia during "the good years" from '84-'91. I don't think USCe is a coaching graveyard. They can win with the right coach. They're just historically inept at hiring them... Vanderbilt though, I'd say is a coaching graveyard. They should look to Duke as an example. The best coaches they've had a much more option oriented than past coaches. So was Franklin. I suspect Vanderbilt will continue to be oblivious and hire an NFL assistant like that guy that got fired from the Texans.

South Carolina signed Beamer to a 5 year deal @ $2.7M per year. I can see why Napier said no thanks. Billy was looking for $4.5 per year and $5M salary pool for assistants. Plus other program initiatives in order to compete with Clemson, UNC and UGA.

That's got to put him last in the SEC in salary.

Indeed it does. Beamer has been pining for that gig for years, plus he's basically just a position coach who found himself head of an SEC school, so the lowest paid salary is still a massive lottery for him.

Very true, I just don’t think their position in the SEC will change with budget hires. It’s not just about salary, assistant pool and other program commitments. How are they going to outcompete UGA, Clemson and UNC in the region?

Shane is a recruiter, and that is what they are going to need to get closer to those schools. Will need to be able to get into homes and get those kids to Columbia. The hard part about that, Columbia sucks.

I don't know why you keep mentioning UNC as if they are in the same stratosphere as UGA and Clemson. They're not.

Because they are still the “Flagship” athletic program in North Carolina. No offense to Appalachian State.

The question with Beamer - was he a good recruiter or Spurrier being a legend make it easy for him? Holtz was a legend too but he wasn't successful. Then again Spurrier is a whole different breed. I honestly don't see how this can end well.
