Yes, we have.

I think of these discussions here as friends and acquaintances sitting around a table and having coffee. Over time, the conversations will meander, and what is discussed later will have little reference to what was discussed earlier.

That's the way I think of it too -- or rather, sitting around over beer (but I'm not a coffee drinker).

Several years ago, a poster made a point to educate me that I was wrong to view it this way, that's it's not like that at all, and that I needed to recognize something something.

That guy no longer posts here (at least, not much).

I won't mention his politics.

Due to medical conditions, I no longer drink alcohol, but I will happily take a nonalcoholic beer with you (please don't wrinkle your nose at that).

It s hard to keep on a single topic, for all of us. See how this went quickly to beer?

That comment was about current conditions, not over the entire period of COVID.

Also, that study includes British people.

(11-12-2020 07:49 AM)RiceLad15 Wrote:  Im continually surprised that numerous posters implicitly argue that leadership doesn’t filter downward, and that how people act in positions of leadership do not influence the actions of those below them.

NOBODY has said that leadership doesn't filter downward. Nobody. We have said (and you even agreed) that leadership comes from authority or acquiescence. If Trump were a vocal supporter of masks, you ADMITTED that it wouldn't surprise you if some Dems who know better would stop wearing them, because you don't recognize him as your leader at all, or at least not your health advice leader.

I think you completely misunderstand Trump supporters, or even people that understand them.... AND you under-estimate people grossly. This is part of why so many of us feel insulted by your posts. You see us/them in such simple terms, such that you can't distinguish not only between US, but even between those of us who never even voted for the guy, vs some dolt in Bugtussle who apparently is getting plastic surgery to emulate Trump.... yet you clearly see yourself and Democrats in general in much more complex and nuanced ways.

Maybe that's because we don't see the President as being 'above' us? He WORKS for me. I'm unaware of any special knowledge about healthcare or any of a variety of issues where I feel pretty informed on where I wouldn't follow my own opinions or those of people who have demonstrated expertise in a field over an elected official with no such expertise. I'd say that's true of almost everyone in this country... even those who really don't know much, and ESPECIALLY the small in number but always brought out by the left as a 'typical' Trump supporter... who takes pride in walking into WalMart with his gun on his hip 'because he can'... or in NOT wearing a mask into a place that requires them 'because he can'. The CULT of Trump is a 'screw social norms and stupid rules, I do what I want'... which means that they wear a mask or not because THEY choose to... and if Biden (OR Trump) signed an EO requiring them everywhere, then they (like many Democrats if it were Trump) simply wouldn't comply and DARE someone to arrest them. THAT is the 'cult of Trump' and not some sheep who blindly follows him like a puppy.

Intentionally obtuse.

But, yes. They call them Tories.

Which is a bit ironic, because both the historic republicans in Great Britain and the parent of today's Republican Party in the US were the Whigs, not the Tories.

I love the fact that both "Whig" and "Tory" as politics terms have convoluted and obscure etymologies - which only makes them even more esoteric!

(Just to be clear, "Whig" has nothing to do with the word "wig".)

PS: According to an article cited in Wikipedia, during the Texas revolution, the term "Tory" was applied to those who favored remaining part of Mexico.

My god, you responded with the same comment, but with respect to black people.

Gotta say, that comment took some stones. Well done.
