3rd among "Small Universities". Nonetheless still a great feat.

NIU is a great institution of higher learning. Great recognition for the school. It is unfortunate that in the Chicagoland area, we often get articles that try to undermine the smaller public universities against the more prestigious named universities. We should all be championing quality higher education in general as a greater good for society. The world is wide enough for many quality schools.

It seems like we get more recognition nationwide than locally.

True, and that's definitely the case with sports. Our best coverage of football is in the out-of-town press (aside from the Chronicle).

I always thought that a fair amount of the Chicago media’s attitude towards NIU stemmed from the fact that many journalists/ reporters are graduates of Northwestern’s highly acclaimed Medill School. I don’t know if this is still true with mergers and consolidations, but back in the day, the management was comprised largely of Notre Dame grads.

100%...I worked at an office that was 80% Northwestern grads...it's a close knit community and they take care of their own

It’s true! I am a Northwestern grad, and I am stuck up and walk around with my nose in the air. I rightfully look down on NIU grads (even though I went there for grad school). You NIU grads just need to realize that those of us who graduated from elitist universities make the world go around. Now, please excuse me as I stuff my face with a couple Red Hot Chicago dogs and let out a loud fart!

As long as you fart with your pinky held high, you can still be a Northwestern grad.
