In the same vein I can't imagine that Baylor fans would be overly energized by this given Fuente's mediocre tenure at VT.
Here's the reality of it all...VT is kind of a mediocre program now. They've had two seasons where they've been more than 2 games above .500 in the last decade...the new generation of players doesn't even care about VT. Most of the people who revere that program remember the Vick years and Beamer's early years, because he was a .500 football coach after 2011.
7-6
8-5
7-6
7-6
10-4
9-4
6-7
8-5
That's how VT ran through this decade....pretty much as average as possible.
A while back I was reading one of the VT posters comment on another forum that the additions of Old Dominion and now Liberty to the FBS level is a major issue facing the school. Most of the better in-state recruits don't live near Blacksburg, so this has definitely put a damper on their recruiting efforts the past few years.
Historically speaking, Tech is a one coach program. I mean, they were a football independent and playing in the Great Midwest with UC when I was a college student in the early 90s. When it was decided the Great Midwest was going to merge back with what was left of the Metro, it was decided they would not be included in what was to become Conference USA.
That being said I think they are going to be fine long term (they are in the ACC) but the day of them winning 10 games a year for a decade or whatever they did under Beamer isn't probably going to be repeated anytime soon.
Virginia Tech was a founding member of Big East football in 1991. BC, Syracuse, and Pitt wanted a football conference. So Miami was added for all-sports, while Rutgers, West Virginia, Virginia Tech, and Temple were added as football-only.
So VT wasn't going to join C-USA for football in 1996.
When the remains of the Metro joined the Great Midwest in 1995, three schools were left out: Dayton (A-10), VCU (CAA), and Virginia Tech (A-10). Houston also joined to differentiate itself from its fellow SWC leftovers that went West to the WAC (TCU, Rice, and SMU).
At the time, it wasn't clear that C-USA basketball was vastly superior to the A-10. The A-10 actually earned more NCAA bids over the next 3 years (14) than C-USA (11), and had a team in the Final Four (UMass).
VT may have preferred the A-10 because it was more geographically focused. The A-10 was an eastern-based conference whose only Midwest members were Xavier and Dayton.

If the Bengals draft Joe the Jim and wife could move from Athens and not have to drive 3 hours to the games.
Is he a good coach? I know nothing about him.
This. UC should be asking if we want him, not the other way around.
I'm sure that most MAC coaches would prefer to work at UC for the salary bump alone.
The lowest paid UC assistant made $160,000 in 2019. Even coordinators in the MAC average less than that. Burrow's boss (Ohio Defensive Coordinator Ron Collins) made $141,400. Burrow himself made $81,600.

James Burrow retired from Ohio a couple years ago. He never coached the DL in his career, although he was the defensive coordinator at OU. I do not understand what the logic would be in hiring this guy. Its one thing if we would have hired him a couple years ago when Joe was looking to transfer here- now there is no value.
On top of that he is 66 years old. Even if he comes out of retirement, what do we get him for a year or two?

Justin Williams/The Athletic regarding the replacement of Witt and other coaching changes: "Early indications I've gotten from that are that the move wasn't a major surprise, but I haven't heard of anything else that seems pressing, other than the usual interest in Fickell and Freeman. OC Mike Denbrock had some opportunities to go elsewhere last offseason and chose to stay in Cincinnati. I think if a HC opportunity popped up he would consider it, but all signs now point to him coming back."
"I don't think they're in a huge hurry [to replace Witt], to be honest. And I wouldn't be shocked to see them keep the job in house, either."

It was written on the wall for a long while.
He gets his continued employment bonus and negotiates his exit $$. And he stays at the university with no bad blood.
Was the only job that worries me about our current staff in 2020.

You guys think Fickell doesn't dream about coaching in the Rose Bowl?

Well obviously...the alternative is a little worse for us
I wonder if there's a darkhorse candidate out there...maybe they throw a check at Matt Campbell? Or do they just troll everyone and get another Cincinnati coach...Butch Jones!

They are "paying money for stadium boxes" type contributors, not "name the building for me" types.

Yes, but not as the coach of MSU especially with the timing of the step down and other mess the athletic department is going through.

Bo knows defense.
Quote:LSU has hired Youngstown State coach Bo Pelini as defensive coordinator, the school announced Monday.
"We are privileged to have one of the top defensive coordinators in all of football in Bo Pelini join our staff," Tigers coach Ed Orgeron said in a statement. "Bo has had some of the best defenses in football during his career and we are looking forward to him bringing his tremendous amount of knowledge and expertise back to LSU to continue to win championships."
