Anderson in now, launched a bomb of a throw in his first snap. Good job by Burdick tracking it down and making the catch

It’s sickening to listen to these clowns singing the praises of this monster BM. This guy is lucky he wasn’t fired. For those of you in the dark; google Mendenhall/ramming.

Game 2: Virginia Cavaliers
I didn't see Andrew Trainer or Herdman tonight. Definitely missed both.

Game is a wrap, but I'd still like to see our defensive backups show well. Jobs are up for grabs.

RE: Game 2: Virginia Cavaliers
Before we start our overreactions, let’s go with some common sense.
I can understand frustration with Mathis, but let’s be realistic. It was his second game ever as a college athlete, and it being against the ACC Coastal favorite, isn’t normally a great experience. This team is still starting to figure out how to play together, it isn’t all gonna be roses and daises from the start. It takes time.

Onto the toothpaste brand.

RE: Game 2: Virginia Cavaliers
I think Mathis will continue to get better; as TP52 said, it is only his second game. While he improves, I would also like to see Anderson get significant playing time. He is a 5th-year senior with lots of starting playing time at the FBS level. Rotate them in and out; use Anderson when you need passing to catch up; use Mathis when you need to ignite a spark; between the two of them, I think we'll be fine at QB.

Loved the turnovers; that's four in each game so far. Keep that up and this offense will get a lot of points capitalizing on it. (BTW, if you told me before the game that we would win the turnover battle 4-1 (including a pick-six) then I at least would have been sure that we wouldn't lose by 35 points).

Hopefully Herdman is back next week.

Looking forward to watching this team progress.

RE: Game 2: Virginia Cavaliers
This game was over before it started. Good thing we play in the FCS.

Mathis is a heck of an athlete but will not be able to run around like he's playing in the backyard. Anderson should get more of an opportunity to sling the ball around. Big fan of both guys.

Was impressed with how Funderburke ran the ball, we should feed him more.

Looking ahead, I don't think our offense is what we need to worry about. Our defense is going to have to step up if this is going to be a good season.

Looking forward to next week vs Colgate- should be a good one.

Game 2: Virginia Cavaliers
I think Mathis did all he could and showed a lot of grit. He appears to be QB1 with Anderson at QB2. Both turned tough situations into positives last night.

Tackling was a problem again...that's the one glaring issue as far as I'm concerned.

We were overwhelmed but in true Tribe messageboard fashion, had that kick return been professionally officiated, no UVA pick 6 on a promising drive, and had we hit the FG...it would've been much closer. Hey, we only lost the 2nd half 17-14 !!!

RE: Game 2: Virginia Cavaliers
I’m in the camp of those who believe that the game was over before it started...especially after attending the Lafayette game.

I was very concerned that UVa was going to hang 70 on us, that our QB would get hurt, and that we wouldn’t cross mid-field like the UVa game from several years ago.

As such, I’m actually encouraged by how it all went down last night.

The upcoming Colgate game on Saturday night, from a pure football angle, is going to be real interesting as I think the Tribe improved last night, and should be very hungry to offer some payback to Colgate for last year’s shutout.

RE: Game 2: Virginia Cavaliers
This is the best UVA team, a veteran team, in many years, picked for the first time ever to win their ACC division. We never stopped playing hard, made some decent second half plays,
and scored some points. Mathis will be fine, tough playing your second college game against an ACC top team on the road.

Take away the long UVA kickoff return and for TDs pick six and it's not 52 points. And, if I'm correct, non-called UVA blocking penalties on both plays should have been called.

Funderburk showed real flashes of his pre-knee injury form and, if so, a big plus for us.

We should get better and I look forward to the Colgate game.

RE: Game 2: Virginia Cavaliers
Last night was tough to watch. Positives, turnovers. Also thought that when UVA finally played their 2nd team we held our own. Hopefully their 2nd team is closer to our competition level than their first team in league play.

Once again I did not like the run blocking by the O line. They are not getting much if any push. That was more concerning to me vs. Lafayette than UVA, but still...

Kicking game did not look good last night.

Here's hoping that our familiarization with the new schemes brings improvement and that our frustrations get worked out big time vs Colgate and our smiles are bright next week.

RE: Game 2: Virginia Cavaliers
2nd half offered some redemption. We seemed to get stronger and more confident as the game went on (granted, some 2nd stringers in, but still. Didn't help Howard against Maryland).

I thought we kept Mathis in too long. Would prefer we had shifted to Anderson in q2 when it became obvious that UVA defense had keyed on his scrambling. He had no pass game against the UVA defense. Not interested in development in a game like this. We should compete at our best full game, which overall I think we did.

Nothing against UVA, they looked solid enough but certainly no top tier P5 team.

And that Cavalier on the horse. On TV, looked like he rode in from a nursing home.

Also - that pick 6 into Tribe corner in Q3 brought back a sweet memory.

RE: Game 2: Virginia Cavaliers
Thought we played hard on D, but we still have difficulties in the tackling game that need to be addressed. Also, our corners got beat several times by their quickness on the outside routes and the safeties did not help out.
Mathis is going to be a talent, but, right now, he has very little feel for the passing game. Hopefully, that will come from repetition. I, too, was pleased with how Funderburke is getting his running power and instincts back. O Line has to be able to produce more than 0.9 yards per carry (1st Half totals) for our backs.
As our JMU friend said, we were getting beat regularly on leverage up front. Their linemen were getting lower, quicker than we were, all night.
Still, this was a much better team than we will see most weeks. We looked to have stayed healthy. Let's see how we look against Colgate.

Also: Why did Everson get NO touches, (passes caught or carries)?? After last week, I thought he was destined to be a Big part of our offense.

FWIW, he was the leading passer until Anderson came in, LOL.

That one PI we got was an attempt to hit Everson. Perhaps the game plan was to hit him more but Mathis was struggling to find guys.

Mathis will be good, but his rawness in the offense and increased pressure caused him to not keep his eyes downfield and default to take off and run. His legs are a big weapon but he will leave a lot on the field if he rabbits before the play develops. Luckily, that is something that comes with time when the speed of the game slows.

I think the smart move would be to start our 5th year senior QB and sprinkle in Mathis situationally. I guess though, if Mathis is the future, he needs to get these looks and licks to grow into the role. Real game play cannot be simulated in practice. Hopefully, we can string together wins as it's happening.

At least three depth players played along the OL last night. Albert seemed to run well behind them.

A lot of really good things last night and our guys didn't quit. Colgate is in for a world of hurtin'.
