That said, I also hope in the future we have seating arrangements where visitor fans sit next to boosters and students are behind our bench and not the other. I'd like to expand the seating. If you can have students throwing water bottles at players at ULM I can imagine how it'd go with a student section as big as ours.

I can agree with the FAMU 2001 crowd. I'd also say SC State in 2010 brought a good size crowd, although not comparable to FAMU. Other than those, I'm struggling to remember when anyone traveled to Paulson like we do to other stadiums in the last 20 years.

It's possible we move the students at some point, but it's not a reality we can entertain right now. We'd have to reconfigure seating in such a way to accommodate 10k students without putting the majority of our season ticket holders facing into the sun. The number one thing we need to do right now is not allow visitors into the lower seating areas to avoid issues and encourage the students to police themselves when they see behavior that crosses the line.

Savannah State brought a decent amount in 2014 and El Cid brought a decent amount the season after. This past season I think Arkansas State brought the most fans that I can recall, but I wasn’t at the Troy game, they could have had more.

Compared to how we normally travel, none of those really brought a decent crowd. I do think stAte brought the most last year though.

I made the trip to Paulson last season for the first time, and I can totally understand why visitors don't come. The thing is that all of the bones are there for an incredible game day experience... good stadium, tradition, energetic crowd, rivalry. I don't even mind a little good-spirited banter about "App Sucks" or whatever... but man I was greeted with the most "FU's" I have ever seen. I was flipped off more times than I can count. I was cussed out from the sidewalk before I ever even got out of my car. Our seats were right beside the student section but we ended up moving a few minutes into the game just to avoid some of the confrontation. I get it, your students were JACKED, but it was truly over the top. I would NEVER bring my kids to a game at Paulson.

I get that students are going to be students, so why not just make the change to keep visiting fans close to alumni instead of students? Why not put the home team's bench in front of the students? There is no sense in a coach's wife or the cheerleaders being cussed at the entire game. Use all of that student energy as positive energy for your own team instead of negative against the visitors.

My impression is that Ga Southern wants to foster an intimidating atmosphere and that's why they intentionally arrange the stadium the way it is. I also think it shows who Ga Southern is, and THAT'S why visiting fans don't enjoy coming to Paulson.

My only issue with visiting Paulson was the number of people that wanted to shake my hand, pray with me, and gloat over Appalachian State's success.

Yes we want an intimidating atmosphere. No we don't want the extreme craziness that happens sometimes.

When the deck was added, student seating was reconfigured to give them the entire lower level with overflow into the deck. This was done because the seating expansion was funded by a fee voted on and approved by the students. Because of that, there was a proportional amount of seats that was given to the students that they didn't have before. In the past, students were only really given the equivalent of 3 full sections and it wasn't enough as we are typically in the 8-10k student turnout for a lot of games. That's the main reason that decision was made in 2014.

Originally, visitor seating was only sold in the deck in the western corner (near Bishop) without allowing visitors down into the student seating. For some reason, we're either selling tickets on that same edge of student seating or visiting fans are deciding to come down there. It's not a good recipe, and I know every time it happens we're going to have problems. I'm actually concerned about Gast this year if their fans end up down there again. There shouldn't be anyone from the visiting team down in that section....it's just not going to end well.

As for what you saw prior to entering the stadium, I try to curb that myself where I see it, but once again there's only so much that can be done. In the future, anyone from App (or any other team) is more than welcome to join me in the Paulson lot and I'll personally see to it that people don't do that crap.

Case in point, there's a certain chant that the student section at LSU does when the band plays a specific song. The administration has tried to get the student section to keep the chant clean, but the only option they've had is to ban the song from being played. Even then, it keeps coming back. I'm sure we'll hear it this Saturday. Will it make me have a bad impression of LSU? No. I understand what it is.

There really is no ideal solution right now. I'm hoping at some point we continue the seating expansion and figure a way to put students more in the endzone like a lot of other schools do. This gets rid of the problem and doesn't displace premium seating behind our bench. That's a ways down the road though.

Not a Georgia Southern thing.

I never recall batteries. The only thing we throw are insults and eagle head frisbees, but we don’t get those anymore. Thanks osama.

do you recall sections covered in plywood, mandated by the NCAA?

Because of pearl-clutching UMASS fans that don’t know what it’s like to have students who care

If it had been the fans who were being abused the plywood would have been in the far left corner, not in front of the team. Y'all can pass it off as "students who care" all you like, but the fact of the matter is the student section needs to be relocated, or the team benches swapped. The players and coaches can take it, but what our support staff and cheerleaders had to endure last year was ridiculous.

Yeah, none of that stuff EVER happens in Boone, right? Give me a break! 05-mafia

Besides, very few in the Socon traveled any fans to Paulson anyway so I'm struggling to see how there was extensive experience of what it was like in our stadium.

Take a moment and re-read your comment. Lots of App fans made 1 or 2 trips to Statesboro swearing they'd never go back.

And lots GS fans have said the same about Boone. But when you really get down to it, there are more than that on both sides that have gone to the opposing stadiums and had a great time and continue to come back.

No one is perfect at either stadium. The bad in both cases is outweighed by the good IF you are willing to go in with an open mind and enjoy it. I've had a great time on both of my trips to Boone. Others, not so much.

I can say with 100% certainty your players, support staff, cheerleaders and coaches wives on the sidelines have not been subject to 3 hours of non-stop verbal abuse by hundreds/thousands of drunk students.

It is truly an absolute shame this game is played on Thursdays now. Outside of the service academies, I honestly can't think of a more heated and normally consequential G5 rivalry game. For the good part of the past 25+ years, our conferences' championships have come through Statesboro or Boone.

Both Statesboro and Boone would be incredible places to host College Gameday. Our Sweetheart Circle would be picturesque and have that classic Southern charm. Where would you guys recommend hosting it on your campus? I'd imagine there are very few large flat areas suitable for hosting a few thousand fans on campus.

Agreed! Attendance records would break every other year if we played each other on Saturdays. I don't see GameDay coming anytime soon though.

I witnessed thousands of students who payed very little attention to the actual game and verbally abused anything with a Block A on it for 3 hours, that's not an exaggeration.

You are the Eagle fan I wish I had met... seem like a good dude. If the visitors were sat near the alumni, we'd likely meet more like you.

Problem is that you can't fit them (visitors) near the alumni without displacing season ticket holders. The entire lower deck on the North side of the stadium is supposed to belong to the students. The only place in the stadium to put visitors away from the main crowd is in the far end of the upper deck. We did that when the deck was built and then visitors bitched about having the worst seats in the house. Go to any P5 game with away tickets and (other than a few) tell me how good the seats are. The visitors are almost always given the worst seats in the house. That's just life.

I'm not sure why they have decided to put visitors on one end of the lower deck. It's just asking for trouble. But when you have 8-10K students come to every game and only a couple hundred visitors, you don't have room to have a "visitors" side and a "home" side.

Y'all can pass it off as "students who care" all you like, but the fact of the matter is the student section needs to be relocated, or the team benches swapped. The players and coaches can take it, but what our support staff and cheerleaders had to endure last year was ridiculous.

Yeah, none of that stuff EVEtR happens in Boone, right? Give me a break! 05-mafia

I can say with 100% certainty your players, support staff, cheerleaders and coaches wives on the sidelines have not been subject to 3 hours of non-stop verbal abuse by hundreds/thousands of drunk students.

Exaggerate much? 03-lmfao So "thousands" of drunk students ignored the game and verbally abused everyone "non-stop" for three hours???? Wow, that must have been rough. 04-jawdrop

I witnessed thousands of students who payed very little attention to the actual game and verbally abused anything with a Block A on it for 3 hours, that's not an exaggeration.

sounds like you didn't pay too much attention to the game either if you were watching the unruly students for three full hours.

Look, no one is saying that all of our students are saints. But no one's students are. I've had more visiting fans come up to me after the games and say they had a great time than I have say they had a crappy time or were abused. The only time I hear anything about how terrible we are is on here when it becomes a pile on session.

Trust me, I watched every painful moment of that ass-whoopin' in some pretty miserable weather just to top it all off... and I've only been to your stadium the one time so what happened is just what happened. I personally like your game day atmosphere, and your stadium. I don't even really mind the students being completely lit as I expect our own students will bring the heat on Halloween as well... I just think the visiting fans shouldn't have to sit among the students and I don't think the students should sit behind the visitor's bench... 2 things and the problems I experienced are solved.

Just to get back on topic, even though your boys will have to hike up that hill to Quinn on game day, at least that trek will not be through the student section.

Agree on the location of the visitors. Again, we didn't do that originally and visitors bitched. There was also a whole thread on how we "disrespected" the Troy band by putting them up on the upper level too if I recall.....

Students are not moving anytime soon.
