I've been to every home game against App since 1998 and can never really remember them bringing a big crowd. The biggest visiting crowd I can ever remember was FAMU in the playoffs in 2001, and even they didn't fill up two sections of the old visitor stands like Saint is saying.
That said, I also hope in the future we have seating arrangements where visitor fans sit next to boosters and students are behind our bench and not the other. I'd like to expand the seating. If you can have students throwing water bottles at players at ULM I can imagine how it'd go with a student section as big as ours.
I can agree with the FAMU 2001 crowd. I'd also say SC State in 2010 brought a good size crowd, although not comparable to FAMU. Other than those, I'm struggling to remember when anyone traveled to Paulson like we do to other stadiums in the last 20 years.
It's possible we move the students at some point, but it's not a reality we can entertain right now. We'd have to reconfigure seating in such a way to accommodate 10k students without putting the majority of our season ticket holders facing into the sun. The number one thing we need to do right now is not allow visitors into the lower seating areas to avoid issues and encourage the students to police themselves when they see behavior that crosses the line.
Savannah State brought a decent amount in 2014 and El Cid brought a decent amount the season after. This past season I think Arkansas State brought the most fans that I can recall, but I wasn’t at the Troy game, they could have had more.
Compared to how we normally travel, none of those really brought a decent crowd. I do think stAte brought the most last year though.
I made the trip to Paulson last season for the first time, and I can totally understand why visitors don't come. The thing is that all of the bones are there for an incredible game day experience... good stadium, tradition, energetic crowd, rivalry. I don't even mind a little good-spirited banter about "App Sucks" or whatever... but man I was greeted with the most "FU's" I have ever seen. I was flipped off more times than I can count. I was cussed out from the sidewalk before I ever even got out of my car. Our seats were right beside the student section but we ended up moving a few minutes into the game just to avoid some of the confrontation. I get it, your students were JACKED, but it was truly over the top. I would NEVER bring my kids to a game at Paulson.
I get that students are going to be students, so why not just make the change to keep visiting fans close to alumni instead of students? Why not put the home team's bench in front of the students? There is no sense in a coach's wife or the cheerleaders being cussed at the entire game. Use all of that student energy as positive energy for your own team instead of negative against the visitors.
My impression is that Ga Southern wants to foster an intimidating atmosphere and that's why they intentionally arrange the stadium the way it is. I also think it shows who Ga Southern is, and THAT'S why visiting fans don't enjoy coming to Paulson.
Yes we want an intimidating atmosphere. No we don't want the extreme craziness that happens sometimes.
When the deck was added, student seating was reconfigured to give them the entire lower level with overflow into the deck. This was done because the seating expansion was funded by a fee voted on and approved by the students. Because of that, there was a proportional amount of seats that was given to the students that they didn't have before. In the past, students were only really given the equivalent of 3 full sections and it wasn't enough as we are typically in the 8-10k student turnout for a lot of games. That's the main reason that decision was made in 2014.
Originally, visitor seating was only sold in the deck in the western corner (near Bishop) without allowing visitors down into the student seating. For some reason, we're either selling tickets on that same edge of student seating or visiting fans are deciding to come down there. It's not a good recipe, and I know every time it happens we're going to have problems. I'm actually concerned about Gast this year if their fans end up down there again. There shouldn't be anyone from the visiting team down in that section....it's just not going to end well.
As for what you saw prior to entering the stadium, I try to curb that myself where I see it, but once again there's only so much that can be done. In the future, anyone from App (or any other team) is more than welcome to join me in the Paulson lot and I'll personally see to it that people don't do that crap.
Case in point, there's a certain chant that the student section at LSU does when the band plays a specific song. The administration has tried to get the student section to keep the chant clean, but the only option they've had is to ban the song from being played. Even then, it keeps coming back. I'm sure we'll hear it this Saturday. Will it make me have a bad impression of LSU? No. I understand what it is.
There really is no ideal solution right now. I'm hoping at some point we continue the seating expansion and figure a way to put students more in the endzone like a lot of other schools do. This gets rid of the problem and doesn't displace premium seating behind our bench. That's a ways down the road though.
