W&M Athlete entrance requirements
I don't think we need to alter our requirements. Maybe we already make exceptions?

When is the last time a starter on the MBB team was academically ineligible?

Marcus
Omar
Terry
Daniel
Nathan
Tim
Danny
David C
David S
Adam
Quinn
Justin

That squad wins the CAA Title most years. It's not a matter of getting players who meet our academic standards...it's getting several of our best guys on the same team.

The last starter I remember was Cory Cofield as a senior in 2006-2007... that’s over a decade ago, pretty impressive.

That has always been my stance. Plenty of academic minded stud athletes out there. It's just a matter of attracting them here. There are guys from most every program that could stay eligible here, prosper, and graduate here. Even schools seen as academically beneath W&M have some of those guys. Identify the right guys, recruit them, and support them while here. I don't think you need to lower anything to attract difference making players or have them succeed here.

Yes, W&M already has different requirements for athletes than "regular" students. A lot of the basketball and football team wouldn't be at W&M without those exceptions. The same probably goes for some of the other sports too. But every school does this. Even Harvard. They loosened their requirements even further when Amaker was hired. It was a condition of him taking the job. And lo and behold, Harvard basketball got a lot better as a result.

There is a limited pool of high school players that fit this description. And a relatively large number of schools are competing for them. If you miss out on these guys you're forced to take players that don't cut it athletically. Slightly changing the standards expands the pool of available players and makes it more likely you will get guys that have the talent /athleticism to be significant contributors.
