Agreed. UNC is bringing in 5 guards this recruiting class, including a 5*, a 4* and a 3* recruit. Pierce is a good mid-major player, but it is hard to see him beating out those guys for playing time.

Not so much at the 3/4 though. Cole Anthony, Christian Keeling, Garrison Brooks and Armando Bacot are pretty sure to start at the 1, 2, 4 and 5. They may play Leaky Black or Brandon Robinson at the 3 but those guys are gonna be wild cards. They don't really have any true wings who can move across the 3/4, and I would assume he has the inside track of a starting role. It's possible he doesn't, but even if that's the case, I'd be very surprised if he weren't getting 18-20 MPG.

Perhaps from your perspective it won't be so great, but with his stated goals of working in an NBA front office (I'd imagine the network for this chosen career path is a little better at UNC than WM) and getting an MBA (USNews ranks the UNC/Kenan-Flagler business school #19 while WM/Mason school is #54 - both are excellent programs) and the opportunity to be a member of an elite program that's almost always a lock to play in the NCAAT...I'd guess JP is thinking it's pretty dang great right about now, even if he doesn't start or get the same minutes he did with WM.
Oh, and that dumpster fire in Williamsburg.
Yeah, it's pretty dang great.

Happy for Justin. Also, shows confidence to have that post wearing a 23 Carolina jersey. Will be pulling for him and for Matt next year. Nice chance for him. Plus, he will have some Carolina experience just like his coaches did. We will never know if he might have come back if we stayed with Coach Shaver and Coach Holmes. But, he played awfully hard last year toward the end of the season for the coaches and his team, even returning to the game at JMU following a nasty tackle from behind. I hope he gets to the Final four with his teammates(even though fairness would have UNC suspended from the tourney for multiple years for the academic fraud they committed in the past).

FWIW I think UNC has all their recruits wear 23 for photos when they visit.

“We’re very excited to have Christian and Justin join our program. They are both outstanding students who can be tremendous additions to our team,” says UNC head coach Roy Williams.....
Justin has done a great job in the classroom and is looking forward to studying in our business program at Carolina."
Best wishes to Justin, but did Williams really go after Pierce for his one year contribution on the court, or to help pad the team gpa, so, his incoming one and dones can walk through their catered classes ??

Water under the bridge, but Pierce asked today in UNC media day whether he would have stayed if Shaver not let go. He stated it was a good question, not sure what he would have done, hypothetical so he had not thought about it much, but the decision made it easier for him to leave.

Definitely strange seeing him wearing the Carolina blue.

But, we were told he intended to leave no matter what.
Of course, we were also told scholarships for walk ons weren't frozen.

Hey now, it wasn't a "freeze," it was a "hold." Two VERY different things. Freezes are much ... um ... uh ... colder. By several degrees at least.

We were also told that she knew that players would leave when Shaver was let go. So it sounds like Huge simply want to clean house of all of Shaver, his staff, and four starters. That's rock solid logic when you are trying to make it to the tournament quickly. A true imbecile or a huckster. You pick.

I'm not saying you guys are wrong, but there sure is a lot of reading into a former players non answer. I take it that he was always going to explore his options. Did Shaver leaving seal his decision? Possibly. I look at it as he was gone regardless. As long as he entered the portal, UNC was coming calling. Heck, UNC might have come calling before he entered the portal. Once UNC was involved, Shaver or no Shaver, he wasn't coming back.
LJ and Chase's decisions are much more debatable IMO. I have no basis for it, but I think Chase was gone regardless as well.

Mr J is very close to on the money. Chase was the one they were concerned about leaving/losing, Justin's looking around was more a response to the firing of Tony.
Think of Chase as our Calvin Baker 2.0. (people, on this board, correctly surmised that the highlights video was out there very early.)
He had people (constantly) telling him he could do better than W&M (that he should be at a P5 school), almost, from the very start.

A part time spot player at best

Without any real knowledge, I surmise that Justin and Chase were gone either way; LJ and Matt not so much. I'm not sure whether the impact of Shaver leaving impacted Nate or not.

I don't know. I think there was still a strong chance Milon was gone- especially with his Instagram comments about being home where he belongs. If Nate didn't need to sit, he'd be gone too IMO. Shaver's firing provided a convenient out, but I still think it was going to be tough to keep those kids either way.
It is now the new norm in mid major basketball unfortunately. If you are a high level performer, high major schools are going to flirt with you. Going forward, I'd expect any stand out freshman or productive graduating redshirt Jr to enter the transfer portal. The system is set up to encourage this and schools are powerless to stop it. I'm not saying the kid will leave, but it seems like smart business for athletes to evaluate all of there options.
If Jake Milkereit starts as a freshman and averages 14 pts a game, is he going to turn down the opportunity to go to a BigXII school near his home? Sucks to lose the player, but I couldnt blame him for leaving. The system isn't built for mid major schools to prosper for long.
