MBB - Post Season Award Guesses & Results
With the regular season over, thought I would throw this out there for some discussion. This would be my ballot, based on my opinions and what I saw this year, if I had a vote. Some close choices. I'm sure most will disagree haha.

First Team All-MAC
Jaylin Walker, KSU - 21.9 Pts, 5.5 Reb, 2.2 Ast
Justin Turner, BG - 18.7 Pts, 3.8 Reb, 3.1 Ast
CJ Massinburg, UB - 18.5 Pts, 6.3 Reb, 3.1 Ast
Larry Austin, CMU - 17.0 Pts, 6.1 Reb, 5.8 Ast
Nick Perkins, UB- 14.8 Pts, 7.3 Reb, 0.7 Ast

Second Team All-MAC
Taylor Persons, BSU - 16.6 Pts, 3.9 Reb, 4.2 Ast
Jaelan Sanford, UT - 15.4 Pts, 4.2 Reb, 3.1 Ast
Eugene German, NIU - 19.6 Pts, 5.1 Reb, 2.9 As
Jason Carter, Ohio - 16.5 Pts, 6.7 Reb, 2.0 Ast
Demajeo Wiggins, BG - 12.3 Pts, 10.9 Reb, 0.9 Ast

All-Freshman Team
Jason Preston, Ohio - 6.0 Pts, 3.6 Reb, 3.4 Ast
Mekhi Lairy, Miami - 6.5 Pts, 1.6 Reb, 1.4 Ast
William Boyer-Richard, WMU - 5.1 Pts, 1.1 Reb, 0.9 Ast
Anthony Roberts, KSU - 5.6 Pts, 1.6 Reb, 1.3 Ast
Ben Vander Plas, Ohio - 8.8 Pts, 5.3 Reb, 1.6 Ast

Coach of the Year: Nate Oats, UB
Player of the Year: CJ Massinburg, UB
Sixth Man: Nick Perkins, UB
Freshman of the Year: Ben Vander Plas, Ohio
Defensive Player of the year: Antonio Williams, KSU

RE: MBB - Post Season Award Guesses
I dont think Toledo will have any players on the list this year. I feel like all 5 starters could make an 'All MAC 3rd team'

Its hard to even rank the UT starters from top to bottom of how important they've been to us this year but I'll try

1. Marreon Jackson
2a. Nate Navigato
2b. Jaelen Sanford
4. Luke Knapke
5. Willie Jackson

I think Edu has a chance at all freshman, but he didnt get the minutes to get his scoring up with the others. But is defense/shot blocking ability alone may get him there. He will be the MAC all time shot blocker if he plays 4 years.

RE: MBB - Post Season Award Guesses
I would not vote for Walker on first team. I am not sure Rob Senderoff would vote for him on first team either. Suspended by Senderoff twice this season for a total of six games. Senior day was embarrassing when you have a senior that walks the floor with his mother to get his framed jersey but doesn't play against the teams arch rival because he was suspended.

RE: MBB - Post Season Award Guesses
I see Edu on the freshman team just because he was such a game changer. No other freshman came close to leading in a statistical category. He just missed in blocked shots. Perkins is a lock for 6th man and I can live with your other first team choices. If Sanford gets in it’s a career award- heslipped throughout the season. No real bigs in there, except Wiggins and I think Thompson gets the edge over him. Not sure either will get in, though.

How does the MAC's leading rebounder, JT4, not make any all-MAC team.

I only listed my first two teams. It was close between him and Wiggins. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I decided I would personally take Perkins, Wiggins and Carter over Thompson (11.2 Pts, 11.0 Reb, 0.5 Ast).

RE: MBB - Post Season Award Guesses
My guess:

1st
Massinburg
Turner
Perkins
Austin
German

2nd
Walker
Persons
Sibande
Carter
Wiggins

3rd
P. Jackson
Roundtree
Sanford
Navigato
J. Thompson

HM
Harris
Minnie
Flowers
Bradley
Dugan

POTY: Massinburg
COTY: Oats
6th: Perkins
FOTY: no clue - maybe Preston?
DPOTY: again no clue. I'd like to see Davonta Jordan or Dontay Caruthers get the nod but I'm biased and I don't know that Buffalo will be rewarded with a 4th all league award

I think Michael Huger should be Coach of the Year. Nobody really even thought BGSU would be competitive. For a while they looked like an elite team. Even being the number 3 seed is an awesome accomplishment. Toledo fans are not usually excited about anything at BG, but Huger did a superb job.

Personally I think at the end of the year there was enough separation between UB and the rest of the field that Oats deserves it. Being in the top 25 for a month longer than any other MAC team in history will work in his favor.

Coach of the Year every year comes down between two camps: those that feel it should go to the coach of the best team and those that feel it should go to the coach of the most improved / most surprising team. I can respect Huger as a choice and if the vote was two weeks ago I would have picked Huger too, but losing 4 of 5 to end the year took some wind out of his sails.

Yeah, I think Huger would win COY in a normal year. Buffalo may have been favored to win the MAC this year, but I'm not sure many were expecting them to be a top 20 team. I don't see how this award can go to anyone other than Oats.

Sanford over Austin is a problem IMO. Obviously I’m a CMU fan but Austin led the MAC in assists and steals along with being 5th in scoring. That’s a head scratcher for me.

Maybe they feel the 2nd place team has to have a player? Sanford fg% was way down this year but he had a few big games. Austin's stats were better as a whole. Tbh German, Austin and Persons I would put ahead of Sanford. For Navigato 3 point production I would put him on 2nd team if I was actually making a team. Not many better pure shooters in the league. Jalin Walker is a stud though.

Head to Head:
Austin: 18 points, 7 assists 9 rebounds
Sanford: 22 points, 2 assists, 6 rebounds

Austin: 20 point taken, 3 assists, 4 rebounds
Sanford: 19 points, 2 assists, 3 rebounds

The MAC released the official All-MAC teams. Akron despite running a 7 man rotation, having the best defense in the MAC, and top 30 defense nationally had 0 1st team All-MAC defenders....

RE: MBB - Post Season Award Guesses
For all the focus on transfers in college sports now, there are a lot of fourth-year seniors on the list, and fewer transfers.

On the First and Second teams, the only transfer is Larry Austin Jr. and Jeremy Harris was the only former JUCO. On the HM, 3rd, 2nd, and 1st lists, 10 of the 20 players have played 4 years at their current school

Of course, there were some guys that transferred out that would have probably been on the lists, if they were still around.

BG's hot start in the MAC was mostly the result of a lineup change by Huger. Without that, no way they would be where they are. And remember, BG was picked to finish LAST. Additionally, was it really that difficult to coach a team with elite talent like Buffalo? 03-wink

Huger deserves it IMHO.

CMU was also picked to finish last in their division and finished 2nd like BG.

I'd vote for Oates: it is much harder to win that consistently, and he has this UB team playing better than almost all MAC teams ever.

He's not going to win it over Oates or Huger, but Toledo's Kowalczyk has won the outright West Division title in back to back years after being picked to finish third both years. He never gets much consideration for MAC Coach of the Year, but has done a nice job the last two seasons!
