RE: FOX No Longer Airing BXII Championship Game
Fox clearly sees less value in the Big 12 than the Big 12 sees in itself. I wouldn't be surprised to see Fox sit out the next time the Big 12 rights are up for bid. Maybe both ESPN and Fox both low ball the conference rather than continue to pay big for Oklahoma, Texas, and 8 considerably less valuable properties.

RE: FOX No Longer Airing BXII Championship Game
The conference championship games no longer serve a purpose and are archaic. We would be better served to let Army/Navy have that weekend and to use it as a makeup weekend for Hurricane games. The weekend of the current Army/Navy game should be the first round of the playoffs hosted by teams that our conference champions with rank being the tiebreaker. 5 P5, 2 at large, 1 G5. Let Notre Dame host if they are ranked ahead of the four conference champions to host.

RE: FOX No Longer Airing BXII Championship Game
You guys missed the lede of the article. If the Big 12 were to move their CCG to Friday, it would conflict in odd numbered years with WWE Smackdown, which Fox is paying WWE a lot of money to air. Of course in even numbered years, the Pac-12 is "stuck" with the conflict.

RE: FOX No Longer Airing BXII Championship Game
So who ends up airing this game and how much do they pay? ESPN has a lot of content they paid good money to air that weekend. I'm not sure they have the slot or the willingness to part with the cash to get a game with two undetermined participants.

I don't know what its worth, but this year's with a 3 loss Texas did better than any ccg except #1 vs. #4 in the SEC ccg.

Which proves only that casual viewers are more likely to watch a 3 loss Texas team than, say, a 1 loss Kansas State team. We already knew that. Fox knew it too, and they were not willing to base the price of that CCG on one time when both OU and UT were in the game.

Agreed. But FOX had to have known this at the point they signed the contract. Might explain why they had the walkaway clause but not sure it explains why they signed the contract at all.

Cheers,
Neil

I'm just spitballing here, but in 2016 (when this contract was signed), maybe FOX did not anticipate the speed at which cord cutting has taken place.

The business model for a successful TV channel in 2020 is very different than it was in 2016.

The premium that live sports has over all other TV will remain, and if anything it will increase. But TV in general is in decline as other entertainment options increase. On top of this, the revenue potential for a cable channel has plummeted with the switch away from bundled cable packages.

In the new world, you can no longer shake down whole cities for access to premium content that less than 10% of people will watch.

I think their philosophy was to build up FS1 and FS2. That hasn't happened. They have narrowed the gap between FS1 and ESPN2 but both are declining.

Yeah that, and the fact that is absolutely guaranteed to be a do-over game. And in college football do-over games still don't feel right no matter the teams involved.

All P5 conferences hope for a UT/OU match up in their CCG.

Let's be honest and see who the TV guys would like to see in the following dream conference championship games

PAC 12--- Cal vs Oregon St or USC vs Washington
ACC- No reasonable match ups considering the divisions. TV guys would love Florida St-Clemson
Big 10-- Ohio St/Michigan vs Nebraska/Penn St or Rutgers/Iowa
SEC- Alabama vs Georgia or A&M vs South Carolina

Since 2010, the lowest rated SEC CCG involved Auburn and South Carolina.

I think all P5 conferences hope their blue bloods make the conference championship game for maximum viewers.

How would ratings look like with these P5 conference championship games?

Cal-Oregon St
TCU-Baylor
A&M-South Carolina
Purdue-Rutgers
Pitt-Wake Forest

It's a cool catch phrase to say one conference only has 2 blue bloods when in reality all conferences have 2 or 3 blue bloods.

I fully understand the Big 12 sucks without UT and OU. The same could be said for the SEC, ACC Big 10 and Pac 12

Lets form a superconference of 16 teams from coast to coast.

USC
UCLA
Washington
Texas
Oklahoma
Alabama
Florida
Georgia
LSU
Tennessee
Michigan
Nebraska
Penn St
Ohio St
Florida St
Clemson

You do know that Auburn is 10th in revenue, 11th in attendance and 15th overall in winning % right? In that regard we are ahead of Clemson, Tennessee, Florida State, and Florida in at least 2 of those categories if not all 3. Do your homework. And we draw quite well for TV too.

No, that is not what the tv execs want, IMO. What they do want (IMHO) is this: USC vs. Washington, Texas vs. OU, Ohio State vs. Wisconsin, Alabama vs. Florida. Florida has more media markets than Georgia, but I like the fact we’ve been in the SECCG for awhile anyway. 05-stirthepot 04-rock

Dream match-ups in the ACC would include Miami from the Coastal. Do you recall the hype after “the U” beat Notre Dame the season before last. “The U is back” couldn’t be avoided. Of course they sputtered from that point. A top 10/15 Virginia Tech and North Carolina are the next two in terms of TV. UNC’s brand has transcended beyond basketball when they’re good.

Eh, I don't agree.

In the B10 you drew the outliers. Wisconsin and Michigan State are not OSU or Michigan, but they are pretty solid national draws in the B10. Frankly, most of the Midwest would watch pretty much whoever was playing in the B10 CCG. Those schools are so large that most of their alums (DYK even Purdue has 400K living alumni) and transplants from the states living elsewhere would tune in.

In the ACC Miami is a national draw. Virginia Tech and Louisville has put up big ratings. If UNC ever gets good in football there are a lot of basketball t-shirt fans who would tune in.

Pretty much anyone in the SEC CCG would get the South's attention. Don't care if it was Vandy. These people love their conference.

Unless it adds up perfectly like that, it’s not worth it

USC
UCLA
Washington
Texas
Oklahoma
Alabama
Florida
Georgia
LSU
Tennessee
Michigan
Nebraska
Penn St
Ohio St
Florida St
Clemson

So the CBS president was lying when he said nobody watched South Carolina or Missouri? And the low ratings on the big 10 championship games not involving Ohio St.?

RE: FOX No Longer Airing BXII Championship Game
I wonder what the other championship games made for the other conferences? Did any make $20 million?
