In a very limited amount of bats she hit decently. Wonder why she did not bat more?

There's pros and cons to this, not sure if it's a net gain or loss it's just different. Buresch was a taller lefty at 5'10", but not a hitter. Boseman seems to be more in line with the hard throwing right-hander that can also swing the bat. She's listed as utility and pitcher at Miss. St., so I'm guessing if she's a good enough hitter she can stay in the lineup and play somewhere else. Like in other sports, committing to an SEC school probably inflates your recruit rankings but she was rated as high as #12 in the Flo Sports recruits for the 2018 class. She also played for a legit travel team in the Birmingham Thunderbolts, and showed well against some of the top talent in the country at 2 PGF Nationals. She's probably a better all-around player than Buresch, but having that lefty look helps a pitching staff and it's hard to come by. We're probably not even in the conversation for this kid coming out of high school, so from that perspective it's a great pickup.[/b]

Some coaches don't like to bat their pitchers, I don't care how strong they are at the plate. Recently VT took that stance, so has Duke and UVA. Studeman was a pitching coach first, that might be why. Looking at their stats, only 2 of their 5 pitchers got any significant ABs and Boseman was 1 of those 2.

By contrast our pitchers have been a major part of our offense through the years.

I'll give Mickey credit there, if you could hit then you were hitting. I'll never understand leaving an offensive weapon on the bench or hitting for them, the old school reasoning was that other teams would throw at your pitcher but you rarely see that anymore.

I think Payton Buresch may be heading to Ohio State.

Another pitching addition
Steeler- are you concerned at all about her 3.32 ERA (Fr), 3.50 ERA (So) in a lower level league? We are not accustomed to such lofty numbers lately. She got banged around pretty good by the P5s.

I would imagine she'll be a #3, probably looking for depth and she seems to be another decent hitter. There are a lot of factors that are unknown too, like how good was the pitch calling, how good was the catching and the defense. I've coached with guys that were so stubborn they'd call the same pitch 17 times in a row, and we don't need to look any further than Mickey Dean to see someone who can make all the difference in the world between being a #1 and being a #3. But to answer your question, yes I would be concerned if she had to come in and throw significant innings next spring. There are teams she can handle on our schedule, but that early season lineup would typically be above her capabilities that have been shown to date.

I have to believe her support in the field was not even close to what we've given our pitchers the past few years.
