USF actually has the second BEST attendance in regards to announced vs. actual in the AAC according to this article. Not all schools reported. You can do a search of schools in the article.

USF - 71% (31K announced, 22K actual)
Memphis - 54% (38K announced, 21K actual)
ECU - 48% (38K announced, 17K actual)
Houston - 66% (28K announced, 18K actual)
UConn - 70% (20K announced, 14K actual)
Navy - 100% (28K announced, 28K actual)
Cincinnati - 54% (28K announced, 15K actual)

New article shows that actual attendance is only 71% of reported paid attendance.

I can see why, not just for college football, but sports in general.

As for college football.

1) With the chances of a 2 loss team making it to the CFP being slim to none, schools have watered down their schedules for non conference games. Some will occasionally play a big game, but it's the exception, not the norm anymore.

2) With TV's being HD and some broadcasts being up to 4k, you get a better picture with "shots" at home from the comfort of your couch.

3) Replay was done more to kill the game than CTE. The flow and speed of the game has been destroyed because they need to "review" just about every close first down, TD, or reception. Add in the 5 minutes it takes to determine "targeting" and it ruins a game.

4) Let's be honest, younger people (in general) aren't going to "suffer the elements" like older generations did. The days of a game played in "Ice Bowl" conditions being full are gone. People these days just aren't going to put up with it. Add in the fact that games are available on numerous "platforms", going to the game isn't as big a deal anymore.

These might only be true for 15-20% of fans, but that's enough to make an impact. As for me, being a bit of a curmudgeon, the game in HD from my couch not having to deal with 70k drunks is MUCH preferable.

From the WSJ article:

Quote:Michigan counts the media, stadium workers and marching bands in its announced attendance.

Given that even Michigan is doing this, we should probably not criticize MAC teams for doing it. 07-coffee3

The NCAA says you can count the band if they pay an athletic fee. Players, coaches, and cheerleaders can’t count. I didn’t know stadium workers could be counted. If Michigan does it then I assume it’s not only allowed, but I bet a lot more teams other than Michigan are doing it.

Memphis announces actual attendance not tickets sold despite what the article says. There were two games last year where announced attendance was below season ticket sales. Memphis likely leads to conference in actual attendance in football most years and will easily lead it again in basketball this year.

They do match up. That is what I am saying. Not sure where the article gets its numbers. You would be hard pressed to find a game attendance where announced and actual didn't match in recent years. I don't know why we don't do announced in football because basketball does do it. If anything I would think you would want it to be inflated by using announced because it looks better. Memphis fans were pissed last year because using actual tanked our average attendance due to the hurricane game and 2 other rain games.

Well WSJ says Memphis announced 38k but scanned 21k admissions. Presumably they obtained that via freedom of information from the university.

I'll make the same bet. At this point we should probably assume that pretty much everyone's reported attendance includes all of these people, in addition to all tickets distributed whether they are used or not, unless someone can show us proof that they don't do that.

Yea and that is totally bogus. Our attendance is actually really good. We haven't been at the 21k actual attendance figure in nearly 8 years (dark times). I think they probably applied a blind formula across most Non-P5 teams rather than pulling real data. I mean ECU's number is totally believable due to performance, but UConn being that high percentage-wise? Most of these numbers don't make a ton of sense.

Cincinnati's number shocks me. The stands always look about as full as they report.

My guess is our athletic department didn't realize what they were asking for and didn't include student scans in those numbers. When I was a student (until 2008), students scanned in under a different system than the general public.

In fact students didn't have to pay anything for a game until 2008. All they had to do was swipe their ID, and there was no limit on number of students allowed in. We had over 40,000 students, so when we started playing well in 2006/2007 it got a big cramped in a 35,000 seat stadium. I'd swear there were 45,000 people there for the WVU game in 2007 (we were ranked #25 and they were #5, and the weather was clear and 50 degrees for a Saturday night game in mid-November).

Ohio U. ........... ..............116,324..........47,579
UTEP............................... 97,740...........45,444

I attended at least 20 Ohio University home games when I went to college (2009-2015).

Students never had actual tickets to get into the games. All we had to do was show our Student IDs and walk in.

I wonder if might account for the huge disparity between scanned tickets and announced attendance.

USF actually has the second BEST attendance in regards to announced vs. actual in the AAC according to this article. Not all schools reported. You can do a search of schools in the article.

USF - 71% (31K announced, 22K actual)
Memphis - 54% (38K announced, 21K actual)
ECU - 48% (38K announced, 17K actual)
Houston - 66% (28K announced, 18K actual)
UConn - 70% (20K announced, 14K actual)
Navy - 100% (28K announced, 28K actual)
Cincinnati - 54% (28K announced, 15K actual)

Memphis announces actual attendance not tickets sold despite what the article says. There were two games last year where announced attendance was below season ticket sales. Memphis likely leads to conference in actual attendance in football most years and will easily lead it again in basketball this year.
If Memphis announces actual how is it possible that actual and announced don't match up?
They do match up. That is what I am saying. Not sure where the article gets its numbers. You would be hard pressed to find a game attendance where announced and actual didn't match in recent years. I don't know why we don't do announced in football because basketball does do it. If anything I would think you would want it to be inflated by using announced because it looks better. Memphis fans were pissed last year because using actual tanked our average attendance due to the hurricane game and 2 other rain games.

The article got their numbers DIRECTLY FROM MEMPHIS, through an open records request. If they were wrong, they would have been corrected before being sent in.

Damn, well since I'm banned over there, you need to spread this word on the AAC board, because that place is full of clowns who constantly hammer us for our allegedly inflated attendance numbers. 04-cheers
