RE: Men's Soccer
Once again, I wish we would do something similar to JMU's (and Delaware) soccer field with regard to a walled enclosure and probably put the track around it. Hang the banners on the wall. Our home games look like they are being played at a high school with the traffic and trees in the background.

Lost 0-2
JMU looked the superior team. Again, we mostly lack any organized attack or creativity.
Bustamante came in the second half, last ditch effort, but was very rusty and clearly not 100%
Is JMU taking over as the class of CAA sports?

Geeze, we've had several starters out throughout the season. Hard to win with top guys out of the rotation.

I hear you, but I worry that we have slipped in the last few years. We used to be a perennial power, frequently ranked in the top 25 nationally. Now we have had a hard time competing in our own conference. We arent without success, but just trying to wrap my head around it.

Your subsequent post leads me to believe that you mean soccer and not all sports. If you do mean all sports then I will point out the same thing that I did on the JMU board in response to a cocky post (where basically they were saying that they were the class of the league): so far in 2018-2019 there have been only 4 championships decided so far: men's cross country, women's cross country, field hockey, and women's soccer. W&M has won 3 of those and Hofstra the other.
I do want to point out one thing to the several posters who thought that I was too hard on women's soccer coach Julie Shackford in her first year (at W&M): hey, both of the soccer coaches at JMU (men and women) were first year coaches this year and both of them won regular season titles (and the men are still alive for the championship). No need to wait 3 years at JMU! (Wait, maybe that proves your original contention!).

RE: Men's Soccer
I agree men's soccer has seemingly slipped the past three years..but it is difficult to blame this year's so-so season on the downturn. It is a fact that the team suffered a ridiculous number of injuries this season. There were anywhere from two to six injured starters out EVERY game of the season. Our star, Bustamante, missed some games completely and played injured almost the entire second half of the season...a shadow of himself!
So it's difficult to blame this season on the program having a turndown; fully healthy with just normal injury problems this may have been a very good squad.

While it was a little tight, men's soccer used to be played with a track around it, and with a walled enclosure.

Ah, yes, the ACC invitational. ACC gets 9 teams in and 8 of them get seeds and a bye. Only N.C. State has to play in the first round.
Who else besides, presumably, the ACC commissioner is on the selection committee?

The ACC, top to bottom, is by far the strongest conference in men's soccer. Every. Single. Year.
Notre Dame, Indian, Maryland, Akron, and a few west coast teams (UC-Irvine, Stanfird, etc) usually round out the top 20.

I don't know why but men's soccer team seems to have a trend in which they have one good year followed by one mediocre year. We need to be more consistent.

RE: Men's Soccer
Yeah, yeah, ACC ..... It is still obscene for one league to get 8 out of the 16 seeds.
The tournament final is in Santa Barbara, CA. The organizers better hope that one of the only three seeded teams west of the Mississippi (Stanford, St. Mary's, Denver) get there (and two of them (Stanford, St. Mary's) play each other in the same bracket).
Stanford has won the last three years, so they are sticking it to the ACC superiority.

7 of the top 10 in RPI are ACC schools. You have to wait until #21 to find a PAC-12 school not named Stanford. Stanford is a top flight soccer school, no doubt, but the ACC owns the bracket because they play top competition all season. Stanford played a tough schedule, as well, so not taking anything away from them.

Yeah, Kentucky and South Carolina have to play in other conferences. It's not a revenue sport...probably comes down to the SEC shotcallers and, to a much lesser extent, Title IV.
Shame, because soccer is big in Atlanta, Dallas, Nashville, Orlando, and all over South Carolina so you'd think it would be supported at UF, UGA, and Tenn, at minimum.
