I honestly didn't know. They said they took time off to see Alabama play Louisville...I don't know what they say about us UAB fans..maybe we aren't as passionate, but time is not always a excuse..money yes, time no..just my opinion.
I know sometimes plans needs to be made and sometimes changed. But, time is free to all to use the way you want.
If UAB was opening against Louisville on a Thursday night, we'd have at least twice as many fans. Savannah State would lose to the Little Sisters of the Poor.

Like Attalla, I'll be taking day off to go to game & if it's just he & I at the tailgate, then that's what it'll be. We'll have fun, maybe play some guitar, eat whatever we end up having & then go enjoy watching the game just like all the rest of the home games. Join us or not, we would like you to join us as the more the merrier but we'll take what we get.

I'm planning to take off work so I can still tailgate. I'll be there even if we're playing at 2am, but opening on Thursday only makes sense if it's against a big name opponent with national TV. Doing this for Savannah St doesn't make sense.

+1 Will take off work as well (1/2 day Thursday and all day Friday), however, I have yet to read a good reason why were are doing this. The just show up argument is getting real old. At some point, someone will realize the fans are the consumers.

I have always admired your optimism.
The "Let Them Eat Legion Dogs" attitude pre-dates Fumbles. Have we forgotten the drooling idiot Herman Frazier having Fish Market takeout delivered to him in Bartow Arena? College sports is a business, yet UAB (and many others, to be sure) insist on hiring out of a narrow "sports marketing" pool that reinforces stale behavior. The old ways aren't working. It's time for something different, and that means different people. We need an AD from outside sportsworld.
Of course I'll be at the game. And if the crowd is small, I'm not going to be sad. Rogue won't run out of the elitist microbrew I want to drink, I can park where I damned well please, and I'll have my choice of seating. I don't really like crowds, and I really don't like crowded stadiums reeking of sweat and stale beer. I'm sort of hoping people will stay away.

Isn't that what we tried with Mackin? He was hired as AD from a corporate job at Vulcan Materials.

Mackin was a corporate gladhander first and foremost, and saw fund-raising as the answer to all ills. And he was actually pretty good at it; he had the financing in place for the stadium before Junior wrecked it.
And Mackin relied on the standard sportsworld suits/skirts for marketing. It's still old thinking.

RE: UAB’s 2018 Season Opener Versus Savannah State Moved to Aug. 30
I’ll be asking off a 1/2 day so I can tailgate.
Thursday night game against Savannah State isn’t ideal, but there are some positives.
(1) I expect a good student turnout. It’s the first Thursday of the fall semester and there will be a ton of new students looking for something to do.
(2) As mentioned, it provides an opportunity for other fan bases to come check out the Blazers without missing their “favorite” teams’ game on Saturday.
(3) Additional prep time for our first road game of the season (@ Coastal Carolina). They will be coming off a fresh beat down @ South Carolina.
I really think some saying we will be lucky to have 5,000-10,000 in attendance is sad. I’ll agree if we get closer to game day and it’s 100% chance of rain & thunderstorms.
Maybe I’m drinking too much green kool aid but it’s hard to be negative about anything football related right now. Too much positive momentum to gripe and complain. I’ll save my energy finding the positives and trying to find some people to join me at the game.

Nailed it. The biggest question for me is, Why? Why are we playing this game on a Thursday night? It isn't going to get picked up for TV. Attendance WILL suffer, I will bet my next paycheck on that against anyone who wants to take the bet. I see absolutely no justification for this move, and if some people around here have a problem with dissenting voices, that's their problem. It is an unforced error, plain and simple. I don't want to be the guy wearing a tin foil hat, but it just defies logic. This, from the same people who didn't have the foresight to not be playing our home finale last year on the day of the Iron Bowl. Sure, lots of people on here are saying they will be there. But they are the people who take time to post on the message board, so naturally they're going to be the ones who will go. The average casual fan, by and large, will be less likely to go because the game is on a Thursday night. I can't go. I am scheduled to be out of town for work, and have been since before the move was announced. And that can't be changed. So, basically, this decision had the practical effect of taking 1/6th of the money I've spent on football and set it on fire.

The opponent in itself is enough reason to question Ingram.
This isn't a program who can play Tutwiler U and still expect 40,000 to show up.
