OSU was cheated and their omission is unacceptable. Any time "experts" get to decide outcomes like this, it makes a mess out of the system. I hate the CFB FBS selection system too. The only system I know of that let's "experts" decide who makes the playoffs. Sometimes they get it right, but sometimes not so much. TV ratings has a lot to do with this, I am sure. It had to be the case with choosing OU.
Medic, the get it right every year. It's just that they get it right for the networks. Oklahoma draws more from the DFW demographic than OSU does. Auburn doesn't have the basketball following of Tennessee so the Volunteers play close to home while my Tigers get San Diego. North Carolina loses 10 games and is a #2 seed in Charlotte. Arizona may be the best team in the field but they get relegated to a #4 seed and then matched up with Virginia if they both win out. So yeah, Virginia got the overall #1 seed and should have the easiest path to the finals because of it but instead they will be playing the strongest bracket and might have to face Arizona (who should have been at least a 2 seed if not a 1 seed) in the regionals.
Purdue (the Big 10's best bet) is put in the softest bracket to keep the around and to keep the huge Big 10 fan base watching deep into the tournament.
I'll be glad when college sports fans see this crap for what it is, a money making opportunity for the networks.
We get the same thing in the CFP. Baylor and T.C.U. were never going to get that slot a few years ago. Why? Lack of interest in those schools by the viewing public.
Look at the College Baseball regionals. At least there they let a #2 seed host if the #1 seed is a small school with limited seating. And at least there they say gee Miss State will host although Louisiana Lafayette is ranked higher. There the issue isn't viewers but rather ticket sales. But the issue is the same, money. One field seats 12,000 and the other barely 3,000.
We labor under the notion that all of this is about fairness and competition. It is not. But we live with the denial over all of it because to face the truth that our whole society is geared to the pursuit of the buck and isn't fair at all is overwhelming.
