What you don't figure in your 'stats' is that we have fans that have been passionate fans for longer than your teams have been established. That's right, figure that stat out. And yes we are embarrassed to be in a conference where the host of the championship game can't get 10,000 butts in the seats.
We've been down and we are hurting but we'll be back.
BTW Tech dogs, beat us then diss us. Beat ranked teams then diss us. Otherwise I laugh at your BS.
I think we have already done both multiple times
You guys are to much like us. Proud older programs that because of things beyond our control have had an uphill climb to an insurmountable peak.
We struggle to pay bills and try and compete against schools that receive $44,400,000/yr from the SEC. We deal with two in our poor state and are just down the road from the one in your state. Not to mention two more just across the state line in Alabama.
We are in the same boat. We are kindred souls. Not like the fillers in this conference.
S. Miss and Tech aren't the only one with those problems.....(below the history section)
What most of you S. Miss fans don't realize Western fans probably understand where you are coming from better than any other fanbase.
Western in basketball...
before espn told everyone how to think and a couple other problems....Western was a national program by any measure you want to draw from.
Wins (16th, might be 18 haven't checked in a couple years)
NCAA Bids 23 (25th out of FBS schools turned down a handful to play in the NIT when it was the #1 tourney)
conference championships 43 (third all-time behind uk and Kansas)
20 win seasons 43 (sixth all-time)
winning% (9th)
polls 21 times and 111 weeks and that's just since the AP started
But like S. Miss, Western failed to build off the history and today...it means nothing to most people. That's what happens when your best years are behind you. Hell Western's basketball history makes S. Miss fb look small time if you compare the two.
14 out of the first 25 years of the AP poll Western was in the top 20
7 out of the 14, top 10
10 out of 14 top 12
5 more top 25 in the AP poll over the next 20 years....
That adds up to Western being in the top 20 (went to top 25 later) in 19 of the first 45 years (1950-1995) of the AP poll. A total of 21 times and 111 weeks in the top 20(25) of the AP Poll. For context...CUSA schools weeks in AP. O for those not listed
Tech 2(14 wks), ODU 1, Rice 2(8wks), UTEP 10,(60WKS), Marshall 2(14wks), UAB 6(34WKS), UNCC 5(22wks), S. Miss 2(19wks), UNT 1(2wks)
And before the AP Poll Western was in 11 of 16 national polls.
Today it means next to nothing...other than to us Western fans. Which sounded a lot like S. Miss fans when we played in the SBC and we watched schools move on mostly because of location.
First it was ODU, UNCC, VCU, UAB and S. Fla
Then it was UNT & FIU
Then it was Middle and FAU
Hell if it wasn't for Louisville S. Miss would have never been in the Metro. Louisville did not want Western in the same conference...
1981 Western had made 8 of the last 16 NCAA tourneys and a F4 10 years earlier. Western also owned UofL in basketball at that time in t head to head games. And Western was averaging 12/13k in fans which dropped to 8/9k in the 80s
S. Miss fans....Sound familiar ?
S. Miss and Tech aren't the only one with those problems.....
1:45 hour drive of Western there's a National championship basketball program and lately a top 10 football program in the ACC.
2.5 hours in the same state there's a national championship basketball program and a SEC football member.
Across the border with in a 45 minute drive there's another SEC program. Not very good but still SEC.
Three hour drive and a bordering state there's another SEC fb program that draws 108k each Saturday they play at home.
Five hours south and you have the best FB program in the country
Three hours north and you have another national championship BB program and a member of the B10 in a bordering state
Four hours north and you have another Big 10 FB program in a bordering state
Four and half hours there's another Big 10 program in a bordering state
If you think it's hard for S. Miss try going up against two of the best basketball programs of all time. In a state that values basketball like Miss does football. In a poor state who's fans seem to gain some form of self-worth by being a uk fan. And they are just as petty if nt more than Miss/Ole Miss fans
We all have problems and just because some members of this conference don't have 30+ years in D1 football doesn't make them "fillers". What it shows is S. Miss got a free ride with recruiting the south for a very long time. Now there are more schools competing for those kids
S. Miss history is getting farther and farther away...if you can't build on it it means nothing today. Hell last year means very little, today. You have to build on it or it dies.
