Ah yes, I forgot about that one. Anyway, we gain nothing by ever playing D-2. We get no credit for the win from the selection committee and heaven forbid if we were to lose then kiss that season goodbye.

Rocco -- Thanks for clarifying about the schedule. I am relieved to read that it is not official. How far out does anyone know the schedule? It seems like we are only told about future schedules one year at a time. We should at least know who the FBS teams are that we will be playing for the next 3-4 years. I think that I heard somewhere that it will be Tech in 2018.

It is Tech in 2018

Nothing has been officially released as yet though I think we will see a continuation of a largely ACC rotation in the future - UVA, UNC, NC State, possibly WVU or Pitt.

RE: FCS to go to a 12 game schedule?
I wonder how the Fla. State announcement will affect our 2018 schedule, now that the game is on the 8th (instead of the 1st as originally set up). I have not seen our 2018 schedule, but I hope that doesn't force us into having our bye in the first week. That would mean 11 straight weeks of football. Never good.

Possibly it is still early enough in the process that we can still schedule another week off later in the season.

SF?

Would love to get a game against Army or Navy. Should see if former Sec of Def Gates can get this done for us...

Army and Navy are great for the fans ... not sure that the Tribe players' knees would look forward to the blocking techniques of these two service academies... not sure Army and Navy want to schedule a potential "L".

How do we not have any D-1 games scheduled past 2018? Other I-AA schools have games booked out past 2020 and beyond.

Cut blocking aside I'm always surprised we can't get a game in Annapolis. They seem to play UD semi regularly. Plus I'm always eager for a shot to beat Canoe U.

Quick turnaround for the Hokies to play in Tallahassee on Monday night, then travel back to Blacksburg, with us on Saturday.

From what I know, we have 2 OOC games scheduled already. Colgate and Tech.

Army and Navy do not pay the $$$ we get from ACC teams for football games.

Navy, by the way, dropped us from their schedule, cancelling future games, after Robert Green-led W&M teams beat them two years in a row in Annapolis about 25 years ago.

It's kinda funny how we turn our nose at D2 games, but ove playing these FBS games. Like as a fan I don't want to go to a game against a D2 opponent, but I feel like FBS teams feel the same way about us.

More money for FBS games but FBS teams think of it as a "free win" even though its possible they get upset. EX: 2009.

I understand what you're saying, but there's D-1 (FBS and FCS), and there's D-2.

I think the interesting question is to ask a UVa fan whether they'd want a home game against W&M / Richmond / JMU, or a home game against Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Minnesota, or Boston College.

Honestly, I think the vast majority would pick the power conference team. W&M/UR/JMU vs some random Sun Belt/MAC team might be a little closer, but I still think they'd prefer playing only FBS teams.

In 2014 UVA played #7 UCLA then Richmond. They drew about 15k more fans to the UCLA game. In 2015 they played Notre Dame before W&M and there were about 17k more fans for ND. Boise State came to town on a Friday night after UVA played W&M and there were about 1k more fans in the crowd. I think that answers your question.

We did not beat or play them two years in a row with Robert Green on the team. We beat them in 1987 and 1991. Robert Green was a freshman in 1988. He only played in the 1991 game.

The reality is the FCS game at UVA (or others) would not be replaced by a P5 opponent, they would be (and have been) replaced with the likes of Idaho, Ball State or Troy. So if you ask a UVA fan which they prefer, I would bet heavily on the in state FCS team. At least there they have some familiarity and interest - probably siblings at these schools as well.

Part of that stems from P5 programs seeing no difference vs FCS and G5 programs. Most major programs and their fans really don't distinguish a difference. Minor league is minor league.

In 2009, I am pretty sure the W&M game was UVAs largest crowd of the year.

Comparing ND vs W&M is ridiculous, proves nothing.

Compare the W&M gate with the games they would more likely replace us with (Ball State, Idaho, Central Michigan, etc).

VT drew more that year. Turns out fans aren't super-pumped to go out and watch an awful team. Last year UR drew more than Central Michigan...but the CMU game was their 4th game of the year after UVA dropped their first 3 games.

RE: FCS to go to a 12 game schedule?
While ticket sales are important, it's about getting to the post-season; whether that's a bowl game or the FCS playoffs. For the FBS schools, one game against an FCS school can count towards bowl eligibility. So that means ACC schools will keep scheduling us. For us, a D2 school does not count towards the 7 win threshold (though on one side the expanded playoffs now make that a soft number, and on the other if they expand to 12 the magic number is likely 8). So that means playing someone you can beat, and since the numbers don't work out for a return game every year if you want to have six home games, it means paying another MEAC, Patriot, Big South, etc. school to come in to Zable.
