It was a stupid choice, that cost a lot of people/organizations/institutions in terms of money and relationships just to make a political statement (which is not in the scope of an athletic conference).
It was also damaged the conference's reputation as a business partner in that the conference failed to honor contracts that the ACC had instigated.

No, HB2 did all this. Other businesses were already leaving the state. This isn't on the conference, it is on stupid rednecks who are in charge of NC.

The conference chose to take a political stand when they didn't have to. The ACC had spent years building relationships with venues like the Greensboro Coliseum which had taken the Women's basketball tournament when nobody else wanted it and had grown that tournament every year. Then the conference opened their mouth and stepped in it while 01-rivals on the very people that had made the ACC what it is today.
This is on the ACC. The conference screwed every ACC athletic department by their meddling.

That's a very strange way to look at the issue. John Swofford did not make this move unilaterally. He did it at the behest of his membership - or at least the majority of his membership.

It was definitely the individual schools which insisted that the conference take action. They are, after all, institutions of higher learning. How can any university worth its salt justify doing business with people who openly and unapologetically discriminate against an entire class of people?

That just doesn't work.

The Charlotte city council has repealed the ordinances banning discrimination against LGBT but the GOP couldn't convince its members in the General Assembly to repeal HB 2. There are lots of Republicans who really, really want to express hostility to the LGBT. That faction is prevailing. They seem unconcerned with the consequences.

RE: ACC Championship back to Charlotte???
Well, their willingness – insistence really – to thumb their noses at the LGBT community is now clear to everyone. The NC state legislature failed to repeal HB2 tonight.

Good for them! I admire people who are unafraid to look like complete imbeciles to the outside world as a matter of principle.

"We're not gonna let a bunch of damn liberals tell us what we can do in our own state. We're the people who are going to be telling other people where they can and cannot take a shitt.

"And if it costs us hundreds of millions of dollars as a result of our stridency, damn the torpedoes! It's about time someone FINALLY stood up to all of those bullying transvestites out there! They get their way on everything but that stops now!"

They have made their choice and now it's up to other businesses (like the ACC, for example) to make their choice as to whether or not they want to continue do business with them?

Personally speaking, I am not remotely offended by this decision. I look at this as their right to be as backward and intolerant as they choose to be for whatever reasons they wish to offer.

However, this is America and the currency spends the same everywhere. Besides, there are plenty of places up and down the East Coast that aren't this blatantly discriminatory which can host championship tournaments. I think it would be cool to give FedEx Field in Washington, DC an opportunity in football.

Also, maybe this is the push they need to finally get the ACC men's basketball tournament out of sleepy Greensboro for good and up to New York City where it belongs?

It's worth mentioning that there's a fairly good chance that the courts will make this controversy moot by finding HB2 unconstitutional. Let's hope so.

WRONG!
The Charlotte City Council reneged on a political agreement between the Governor, Governor elect and the Senate and only repealed PART of the ordinance in Charlotte. This caused the Senate to add additional provisions in the repeal language and the whole situation deteriorated and HB2 was not repealed.
AS it was last March, the Charlotte City Council (when they overstepped their constitutional limitations) was responsible.
The Charlotte City Council tried to pull the political wool over the NC Senate and got caught and screwed the entire State...AGAIN!

The city of Charlotte did repeal the whole ordinance early wed morning to atempt to keep the repeal effort alive. They earlier repealed the bathroom portion because that was the issue that the State claimed they had issue with & was reasonable co sidering that several cities in the state already had similar protections in place. This among other issues was a way for them to stick it to Charlotte which the small narrow minded reps on the state level have long held some level of animosity toward.

The Senate then added a provision that no other entity could attempt to pass a similar law until after the 2017 legislative session which was rejected by Democrats.

RE: ACC Championship back to Charlotte???
Pat McCrory should certainly know about the inner workings of Charlotte City Council after serving as Mayor of the city from 1995 to 2009.

I just wish people who call themselves "Christian" would actually follow Jesus' lead and stay away from politics (e.g. "My kingdom is no part of this world", etc.). When you mix religion and politics you pretty much always get a monster.

There are other ways for religion to affect people's behavior besides legislation... how about teaching morality in church? Unfortunately, that is often where they learned the bad behavior in the first place! [/rant]

That is an interesting spin you put on things. CLTCC held up their end whether you consider their actions on Monday sufficient enough or Wednesday mornings needed for full compliance. It was all done prior to the GA going into session. Only the NCGOP went back on the deal. They are an arrogant bunch of power hungry bullies that gerrymandered districts have made untouchable. It is costing our state dearly and not just in a financial sense.

The bottom line is that the city council swallowed it's pride & made a effort to get a deal done. The state hasn't exactly earned trust in these parts by attempting to steal control of the airport or the I-77 toll lane contract.

I think he is referring to the members of the General Assembly. They mainly aren't "hillbillies" either though. I think he is just throwing out a derogatory name, like "rednecks", "yankee" etc.

If I were an AD incensed at this political meddling and wanting to make some people in the ACC pay for their mistakes, I'd publicly in the media start whipping support for moving the ACC offices out of Greensboro. If they fail to do so, I start publicly whipping for a vote of no confidence in Swofford.

They only repealed the entire ordinance AFTER they got caught trying to screw the Senate.
The Senate then added a provision that no other entity could attempt to pass a similar law until after the 2017 legislative session which was rejected by Democrats.
If the Charlotte City Council had upheld their original promise HB2 would have been repealed. The legislature was not about to trust the Charlotte City Council after their deceitful behavior.
SHAME on the Charlotte City Council, the fault lies entirely at their feet..AGAIN!

Yes, yes, yes. Dumb hillbillies can't see past their bigotry to see this.

Hillbillies in Charlotte?
Do you actually know anything about the State of North Carolina?
I know NC very well. I am talking about the Republicans in the gen assembly. They can't stand that NC is progressing into the 21st century and long for the days of Dixie.

Looks like all the Democrats in the Senate voted against repeal it.

The bill was split into two votes, part one to repeal HB2, part two to impose a moratorium on antidiscrimination ordinances being created by municipalities until 30 days after the next legislative session. It was a parliamentary rules trick to try and box in the Democrats. If both votes passed the bill would go to the house reconsolidated for one vote in the house. The deal was a repeal with no amendments and no other bills in the session. The Democrats would have voted for repeal if the bill was a straight up repeal. The Democrats didn't fall for the trick.

Remember that the Republicans have a rock solid super majority in both houses. They don't need the Democrats, unless of course they can't control their own members. Their members were in revolt.

RE: ACC Championship back to Charlotte???
1. The per school portion of the revenue difference between holding the FB CCG in FL vs. NC is effectively what schools like SU, Pitt, UL, etc. were forced to contribute/voluntarily contributed to changing the outcome of a North Carolina political fight.

2. This political fight in NC, whether it's about bathrooms, a culture war (i.e. between urban/suburban residents vs rural residents), and/or a state/city power struggle is a civil war within the state. There isn't really a strong Nexus between the fight and non-NC politics.

3. Therefore, it's not clear to me why Syracuse should fund one side of the fight. Are the non-NC schools getting something out of being pulled into a NC civil war (like a chance to get paid to host extra ACC CG events on campus), or are we just getting screwed?

That's what I figured, which is why I'm strongly against the ACC taking a position in NC politics. It would have been one thing if the conference/NC schools went to bat for us when the NCAA gave us PSU's tab...

Start raising hell to move the ACC offices out of Greensboro and stop all home games for all NC based ACC schools in all sports. Hold their feet to the fire of intellectual consistency. And you can even couch it in terms that make it difficult or impossible for them to fight back politically. "If the ACC doesn't support the LGBT community outside of a one football game, why should anybody take the league seriously at what it says regarding discriminatory legislation?" Don't stop raising hell until heads roll and/or policies change.
