back then smu had the money and the deep pockets supporters to keep up with the bigs. they dont have the mindset to be at the top anymore. the old "blue hairs" and die hard fans have gone away and been replaced by the ho hum types who arent rabid sports supporters because they have many other interests.

Doormat? Not really. SMU was a major player in CFB way back. Won the 1931 national title, two more in the early 80s before they got the death penalty. Doak Walker went to school there. It was a national-power type program, and might be again some day.

I expect them to improve dramatically over the next couple of years. Chad Morris was as big a reason Clemson went from a perennial 4- to 6-loss team into a consistent Top 15 program. He's a good recruiter and an excellent offensive coach.

It will be difficult for them to sign the type of players that they need to compete with the bigs. their administration sees the school as more of a Duke than anything else. they are not going to go after those kids with a record or questionable morals just because they can run fast. they may become competitive in the AAC against the likes of memphis and tulsa and tulane tho and become one of the better teams at that level. just my HO from listening to fans and alums.
